Movie Meltdown - Episode 577 (For our Patreon "Horror Club")

This episode we discuss Blood Fest directed by Owen Egerton and starring Zachary Levi. Yep...  Zachary Levi. Oh yeah, and also Robbie Kay, Seychelle Gabriel, Jacob Batalon and Barbara Dunkelman.

And as we work on creating our own horror movie theme park, we also address… Reacher, Sleepaway Camp, Death Trap, The Cabin In The Woods, research and development, The Houses October Built, Tate Donovan, side project, all my friends are dead, they overcomplicated their own nonsense, Christopher Reeve, Faces of Death, resurrecting dead people, that’s my toucan, wrist band technology, the real-world setting of things, Mr. Leadfeet, building a tower, Superman, gaming references, we haven’t seen any other grown-ups in this movie, too much going on, the theater full of dolls, Dad story issues, the clowns still ruin everything for me, Disney World, we have to follow the rules, security camera footage, Michael Caine, a slap in the face to horror fans, I don’t know anything about electronics, Lovecraftian gods and the power of Ned.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for the finale of “Sleepaway Camp” as well as the entire movie “Blood Fest”... go watch them before you listen. You have been warned.

This time we are talking about one of the most unique horror films of the 80's. It is a campground slasher with a twist ending that most people are aware of now that we are almost 40 years past its release, Sleepaway Camp. The guest is Ed from PodVanDam and Superchantastic. We try to make sense of the story and figure out if it is problematic or just a little misguided. 

This week our hosts continue to explore the slasher genre by looking at some of the outliers that slipped out of the slasher boom of the 80s. In this case it's Sleepaway Camp (1983), the film that starts as a derivative camp slasher but has an unforgettable ending. What does this film tell us about feminism and gender politics of the 80s? What does it tell us about the length of shorts on guys in the 80s? And most importantly: what does it tell us about Ricky's hat choices?

We're ready to wrap up the Sleepaway Camp franchise! Join us as we discuss the major themes in this franchise, as well as issues of transphobia in horror films. Our dad will stop by to talk about his experience as a camper and a counselor, and tell stories about two different people whose names we have to bleep out. In the final chapter of this franchise we go back to the beginning: original director, original cast (as much as possible), and the original presence of irrational anger throughout the film. Join us as we talk about how this film fits into the Sleepaway universe, and how it does not fit into the universe of 2008, which is the year this film was made. We'll also talk about the first unfriended movie, Cordie's future children, why the woods are bad, and being a good cousin.

We'll also talk about our experience going to see an advance screening of the upcoming Unfriended movie!

We're back at Sleepaway Camp, and even though it's a totally different camp this time, the killer is the same. So much the same, in fact, that she hasn't changed her first name, despite being only a short distance from where she killed numerous people. Join us as we dissect this film and talk about why Angela's motto of "If your morals are strong, you'll never go wrong" only sort of applies to what she's doing. We'll also talk about mullets, touching brains for the first time, and camping until we die.
