    Renewed opportunities for Czech-Polish cooperation

    Renewed opportunities for Czech-Polish cooperation

In their paper, Pavel Havlíček of the Association for International Affairs in Prague and Adam Balcer from the College of Eastern Europe argument that the Czech Republic and Poland have the potential to serve as a central political nexus for the entire region. In the podcast, Havlíček, the Czech expert, emphasizes the shared political positions between Prague and Warsaw, particularly on issues such as Russian aggression in Ukraine and other pivotal European matters. As the collaboration between the two capitals deepens over time, it holds the promise of not only garnering support from other regional capitals for the collective benefit of stakeholders within the EU and NATO frameworks, but also marginalizing  detrimental policies of Hungary's Viktor Orban.

This podcast has emerged as a result of the project "Czech-Polish Cooperation in Eastern Europe at the Turn of New Opportunities" implemented by the Association for International Affairs (AMO) in Prague and College of Eastern Europe (KEW) and was supported by the Czech-Polish Forum.

The situation in Slovakia might not be as bad as it appears

The situation in Slovakia might not be as bad as it appears

Several factors suggest that despite his illiberal rhetoric, the new Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, may not significantly alter the country's policies. Slovakia is deeply integrated into both the EU and NATO, and PM Fico, being an experienced politician, recognizes the importance of Ukrainian independence. Tomáš Strážay of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association also emphasizes the significance of the V4 forum in the region, noting that its informal format facilitates the resolution of profound differences among member states.

Early parliamentary election in Slovakia, 2023

Early parliamentary election in Slovakia, 2023

After several years of political crisis, the cards are reshuffled in the Slovak National Council. Veteran PM Robert Fico’s left-wing Smer party finished first, although, not many predicted a bright future for the sovereignist politician after his resignation as head-of-government in 2018. The pro-West liberal Progressive Slovakia party came in second, while the pro-EU social democratic Hlas received the third most votes. Led by ex-PM Peter Pellegrini, the latter party found itself in the kingmaker's position in the government coalition formation process as a result of the long-awaited early parliamentary election in Slovakia. “Far above the Tatras, lightning bolts are pounding” – In our newest podcast episode, Dr. Jaroslav Ušiak from the Matej Bel University guides us through the political storms of Slovakia.

With the help of guest experts and politicians, in the podcast series of MCC’s Centre for Political Science we endeavor to analyze which actors are the real winners of the parliamentary and municipal elections taking place this year in different European countries and what exactly can be considered a real victory after the ballot counts.

From the Deep South to Slovakia with Christopher Shaffer

Notes from Eremocene with Viera Čákanyová

Notes from Eremocene with Viera Čákanyová

Notes from Eremocene (Berlinale Forum, 2023) by Viera Čákanyová is an experimental documentary that delves into the future possibilities of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence. Through a captivating blend of analog footage and 3D scanner images, Čákanyová captures the clash between traditional and digital elements of contemporary society.

This is her third feature, concluding a trilogy that began with her debut work, FREM (2019), followed by the documentary White on White (2020). Across all three films, she explores the same themes: artificial intelligence, a dystopian future for humanity, analog versus digital, nature versus civilization, and climate change.

In a fun conversation about serious matters, this episode explores Čákanyová's artistic process, which can be solitary at times, and her approach to sound, editing, and cinematography. We also delve into the different perspectives she inhabits in each of her films and the profound questions these films raise about our existence and the future of our societies.
