Are we too distracted to think? The answer is worse than you’d expect. In his latest book, New York Times bestselling author Johann Hari says we’re all the victims of attention theft and the consequences are catastrophic, for our personal lives and our democracy. Adults in the workplace focus on a task for 3 minutes on average, and that number is declining. “We've got so many crises we need to deal with that require sustained focus and attention on the part of the citizenry,” Hari tells Laura, but our focus has been stolen by companies out to make a profit. “Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention and How to Think Deeply Again” was named one of the best books of 2022 by many publications and is out in paperback this month. In this wide-ranging conversation, Johann and Laura discuss how we got here, what structural changes we need, and how we need to stop beating ourselves up. It's not our fault we can't focus, says Hari, but we do need our minds back if we want society to function. All that and a commentary from Laura on Luddites.

Dr. Sheri Prentiss - Doctor with Many Hats!

    Quick-Show Notes:

In this episode of The Millionaire’s Lawyer, JP and Sheri Prentiss discuss:

Sheri is hopeful that COVID stays stagnant

Her predictions for when the Second Wave may arise:

    • Next surge of viruses
    • Flu season (Fall)

    Recommendations:

    1. Careful with Physical Distance; respect it
    2. Take responsibility for yourself - wear your mask and stand in the spots the indicated

Hopefully, since we have a good idea of how to handle this COVID-19 Pandemic, the next wave will be easier for the public and healthcare professionals to handle.

    Suggestions to keep your sanity:

    • Appreciate the fact the virus isn't standing right at your front door
    • Masks are to protect OTHERS, don't be selfish and make sure to cover both your mouth and your nose
    • Do all your precautions - Wear a mask, wash your hands, stand where indicated
    • Don't be fearful or afraid, it will do more damage to your mental health if you do!

Sheri went through some major life changes forcing her to find a different career. She noticed she loved finding the "toxin" within workplaces and became an Occupational and Environmental therapist!

Never be afraid to increase your knowledge and experiences

Be okay with saying "No, I am not okay"

Sheri noticed that moving forward without acknowledging she wasn't okay didn't allow her to grieve and she made decisions based off that

    • Acknowledge it to yourself and to others
    • Learn to cope
    • Verbalize what you need
    • Accept what others are willing to do for you, do not have expectations; be thankful for what they are willing to do, and are able to do - you don't know where they are at mentally either

You will find truer relations once you have open communication with someone

LIVE. Love your self and others, enjoy your life!

The Do's and Don'ts of Apologizing

The Do's and Don'ts of Apologizing

As flawed, broken people, "I'm sorry" are two of the most important words we will ever hear and speak. Without the possibility of restoring relationships, our lives would be hopeless and tragic. Yet even given the benefits of it, we often resist apologizing. We rationalize our bad behavior, minimize its impacts and convince ourselves that the other person prompted your wrong doing.

In this episode, we discuss why apologies are so important - and so difficult, especially for those of us who struggle to reconcile our imperfections. And for those of us needing help with this skill, we'll offer our best advice for what to do and not to do in mastering the art of apologizing.

    SHOW NOTES
1:15 For our black friends, this is our message and commitment to you in response to the killing of George Floyd.

3:45 If you're perfect, then you can stop listening. For everyone else, this is why this episode can be beneficial to you.

5:00 Ever consider apology as a tool for God's restoration for our world? This perspective might help us be motivated to

10:00 Taking responsibility for your bad behavior is key in apologizing, but it might be easier said than done. Listen here for some examples of how effective apologies might sound.

14:10 Hear Robin's example of what not to do and how building an apology habit can strengthen our relationships.

16:00 Are you like Rachel and want to "fix" things in the moment? Or do you need time to process the apology conversation?

18:00 Do you have trouble giving others grace when you have a misunderstanding? This tip is something that can benefit us all.

20:00 An apology without this is completely empty and will probably do more harm than good.

21:45 Here's the one word to avoid if you're serious about apologizing and restoring relationship.

23:00 Not paying attention to this during any conversations, especially apologies, is disadvantaging your effectiveness.

25:30 Is ghosting an acceptable form of apology? NO! How about a text? Or an email?

28:30 Has someone wronged you deeply and owes you an apology that's never come? You're not alone, but you are worthy.
