Barry Soper: ZB senior political correspondent on the Government's plan to tighten up emergency housing

Barry Soper: ZB senior political correspondent on the Government's plan to tighten up emergency housing

The Government is set to place greater scrutiny on New Zealanders trying to access emergency housing.

The Minister for Social Development has announced the verification process, eligibility settings and obligations will be strengthened.

It includes checking whether someone has 'unreasonably contributed to their need for housing'.

ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper says more case workers will be needed to address these standards- but change in this area is needed.

Carmel Sepuloni: Labour's Social Development Spokesperson on the Government's plans to ramp up sanctions for those on the Jobseeker benefit

Labour's defending its work in the benefit space when in government, saying it takes time for change to occur.

Social Development Minister Louise Upston's announced a ramp up of work check-ins for jobseekers, with sanctions for those who don't meet obligations, starting in June.

Labour’s Social Development spokesperson Carmel Sepuloni told Mike Hosking that when she was minister, there were record levels of people leaving benefits to get into employment.

But she says there were a lot of people coming onto the benefit who didn't necessarily have the skills to match the jobs that were out there, which is why they invested in upskilling and training.

Dougal Sutherland: Clinical Psychologist on lockdowns potentially causing an increase in learning and behavioural issues in children

Dougal Sutherland: Clinical Psychologist on lockdowns potentially causing an increase in learning and behavioural issues in children

Covid lockdowns may have played a part in the increase in learning and behavioural issues being picked up at early childhood education.

The Educational Institute says the increase has meant waiting lists for specialist support are far too long.

Clinical psychologist Dougal Sutherland told Tim Dower that the main thing kids that age do is play and interact with other kids, which provides social and cognitive development and learning.

He says that while teenagers could jump online to socialise with their friends, that play and interaction can't be replaced, so young kids missed out during isolation.

Karen Chhour: ACT spokesperson for Children and Social Development says identity politics getting in the way of children's best interests following Oranga Tamariki dispute

Karen Chhour: ACT spokesperson for Children and Social Development says identity politics getting in the way of children's best interests following Oranga Tamariki dispute

Oranga Tamariki have sought legal resolution over a dispute about who should care for a 3-year-old girl.

The organisation believes the child should be placed with Māori caregivers within her wider family, but the girl's father identifies her as NZ European and Aboriginal- not Māori.

ACT spokesperson for Children and Social Development Karen Chhour says children deserve stable loving homes, and identity shouldn't be the ultimate factor.

"The best interests of the child should be first and foremost, and this looks like just another case of having to go to court over heritage- it seems absolutely insane to me."

    The Sign of True Education

    The Sign of True Education

In this episode of Navigate the Day, we explore the concept of education and its relationship to schooling. The quote from Epictetus reminds us that being properly educated means learning to apply our natural preconceptions to the right things according to nature, and separating what lies within our power from what doesn't. As we reflect on this quote and today's journal prompt, we may realize that we have been confusing schooling and education.

The speaker shares their personal experience of feeling defeated by both the lack of formal education and the feeling of not being well-educated. However, they remind us that education encompasses all the experiences that contribute to our intellectual, emotional, and social development. The missing piece for the speaker is action, but they have taken steps towards it by meeting with an admissions assistant for Arizona State University and their aunt, who is a realtor.

Through their reflection, they learn to accept where they are currently while taking steps to move forward. It is crucial to focus on the things that we have control over, such as our thoughts and actions, and not worry about things that are outside of our control. While schooling is important, it is not the only aspect of education. It is possible to receive a great education without attending school, and vice versa. The speaker concludes by acknowledging that they still have work to do, but they are committed to continuing their inner work and getting closer to living a more peaceful and fulfilling life.

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!

Beating Poverty by Investing in Teachers: A Labor Story for May Day

Beating Poverty by Investing in Teachers: A Labor Story for May Day

McDowell County, West Virginia, in the heart of what used to be coal country, is one of the most impoverished counties in the US — a place that embodies the challenges facing many American areas in transition. But something new is happening there; it’s called Reconnecting McDowell, a multi-partner effort, led by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Can education be the driver of local economic and social development in one of the poorest places in the US? What if the best anti-poverty program is investing in teachers and children? In this episode, for May 1, a traditional labor holiday around the world, we take a look at Reconnecting McDowell and speak to some of the beneficiaries. Drawing on some of the labor movement’s earliest traditions, could this partnership between local drive and national commitment provide a model for the future?

“I feel like we are coming back to serve and coming back to plant seeds in an area where we have let our seeds and the grass wither and go dry. It's time to quit looking for the grass that's greener on the other side and actually plant seeds.” - Nadia Johnson, Communities in School Coordinator, Mount View High School, Welch, WV

“We have to start with the little mom and pop shop that hires two or three people. And then you have another little mom and pop shop that hires two or three people. And we keep going with that momentum.” - Harold McBride, Mayor of Welch, McDowell County, WV

“What we've learned here is that the first action is not to point fingers. The first action is not to blame. The first action is to come together and figure out what we need to do, who needs to do it, and whose voice has to be heard.” - Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO

The Great Development Dialogue 24 Jan 2020

Speakers: Maitreesh Ghatak, Dr Gharad Bryan, Deoborah James, David Graeber and Kathryn Hochstetler * Chair: Professor Jean-Paul Faguet The Great Development Dialogue is a yearly event sponsored by the LSE’s Department of International Development, with two purposes: (1) to explore some of the deepest and most vexing questions in development from an explicitly cross-disciplinary perspective; and (2) to shine a light on what the disciplines can and cannot tell us about economic and social development. Past dialogues have featured speakers like Ha-Joon Chang, John Sutton, Danny Quah, and Robert Wade. This year’s event began with the political economy of land, and then moved onto broader issues of what economics, anthropology and political science can and cannot teach us about development. The event featured more speakers from more varied perspectives than in the past: Deoborah James and David Graeber (anthropology), Maitreesh Ghatak and Gharad Bryan (economics), and Kathryn Hochstetler (international development).
