Episode 23 - 8: Soil Health and Career Inspirations with Beth Sastre of VCE Loudoun County
Who inspired you in your career and spurred your interest in soil health? Beth Sastre is an extension agent for commercial horticulture in Loudoun County with Virginia Cooperative Extension. Beth was inspired to pursue a career in agriculture and natural resources by her grandfather and by Mother Nature. Beth's grandfather was an agronomist in Mexico and worked closely with farmers on soil and water conservation-related issues. Additionally, Beth was fascinated early in her life by Mother Nature, the beauty of natural resources, and how our farming practices affect soil health. Beth shares her own inspiration and fascination with soil health with farmers, homeowners, students, and Future Farmers of America in Loudoun County and across Virginia through her educational programs and scientific expertise.

It's mid summer, but that doesn't mean you can forget about food plotting.

Killer Food Plots Nick Percy and Steve Noble of Maximum Outdoors TV talk about this summertime food plot management stage, the problem with procrastination and obtaining permission to plant.

The two veteran plotters also discuss soil testing, fertilizer, browsing pressure....and Steve puts Nick on the "hot seat" once again.

110: How to Develop a New Vineyard Site

110: How to Develop a New Vineyard Site

Vineyard development begins with the soil. Steve Vierra, Director of Vineyard Operation at Derby Wine Estates and Certified Professional Soil Scientist, has developed many vineyards since the 1990s and always begins with a site evaluation to determine what is actually plantable. This includes a deep dive into all aspects of the prospective vineyard including climate, rain fall, aspect, slope, rootstock, soil types, and best varieties to create a self-sustaining vine. The goal is to develop a vineyard that is easy to farm around natural resources and the goals of the business.

Steve covers how he evaluates soils with both pits and physical property tests for micro- and macronutrients. Learn about ideal rootstocks and clones for different soil types, plus Steve’s favorite development projects in Paso Robles California.

Biological Soil Testing is The Future!

Biological Soil Testing is The Future!

Jason introduces the future of in-laboratory soil testing in Nature's image.  The standard soil test conducted at universities and labs across the country is no longer needed, nor accurately calibrated, if you're managing your food plots in a regenerative manner.  If soil health and a biologically driven system is your approach moving forward, ditch the costly $15 university soil test for far better options.

It's another lesson in food plotting and habitat management this time on the Killer Food Plots podcast.

KFP's Nick Percy talks about a recent project on a three hundred acre West Michigan property that suffered from poor draining.  Nick and his crew had the land tiled and will soon work on food plots and bedding areas.

He also talks about the role of trail cameras in whitetail management, especially the new cellular models that allow landowners to monitor their property remotely.

Nick then describes a recent Facebook Live event on Mike Avery Outdoors and describes how social media and video will allow KFP to reach a bigger audience.

All that, and much more, this month on the Killer Food Plots podcast.
