    Episode Introduction

Dr. Michael Nemeth, explains why NASA could not prevent External Tank (ET) foam shedding and why O-rings were not the cause of the Challenger accident.

For NASA to fix its broken culture, it needs to return to its research DNA which was encoded at its birth from its predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA). Dr. Michael Nemeth helps describe what a "research culture" embodies and how it differs from a sound engineering culture. He will describe an environment at NASA Research Centers like Langley in the 1980's and how that environment helped nurture some of the greatest minds which led to key knowledge discovery and technical innovations. Mike will also discuss some of the key technical challenges he and his colleagues successfully solved such as the redesign of the SRB field joint and the development of the Space Shuttle superlightweight external tank.

#78: The Space Shuttle, Part IV

The Teacher-in-Space finalists take a ride on the vomit comet and are rewarded with a trip to Space Camp, which tragically results in the death of an employee, before returning to Washington, DC for the announcement of which one of them will be joining the crew of STS-51-L. We also learn why mission specialist astronauts really don't like - some might even ay hate -  payload specialist non-astronauts.

#77: The Space Shuttle, Part III

Following the first several shuttle missions, particularly after Sally Ride's historic flight on the seventh mission, public interest in the shuttle program dropped off much as it had following Apollo 11 and the first successful moon landing. In an attempt to rekindle public interest, President Reagan announced that the 25th shuttle mission would include a non-astronaut. NASA would be sending the first private citizen to space, a teacher who be selected following a nationwide application period.

#76: The Space Shuttle, Part II

To qualify the Space Shuttle, four test flights into space with two member crews, were launched to prove its spaceworthiness. After the final of these flight, which landed on July 4 - a date I'm sure what not a coincidence - President Ronald Reagan declared the Shuttle fully mission capable. Between 1983 and 1985, three more shuttles joined the fleet and the seventh mission of the shuttle era, STS-7, saw Sally Ride become the first American woman in space.

    Episode Introduction

Ever wonder what it would be like to lead the next mission following the Columbia accident? Tune in to Leading Edge Discovery Podcast and listen to STS-114 Commander Eileen Collins’ first-hand account.

Aviation pioneer and first female Shuttle Commander, Col. Eileen Collins, recounts tales from her book, “Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars”, about her journey growing up in Elmira, NY; flying heavy aircraft in the Air Force; Test Pilot School, and her eventual command of one of the most complex and demanding Space Shuttle missions ever.

Listen to her recount her leadership lessons learned as she was challenged to navigate an intense emotionally-charged atmosphere post Columbia, where trust was lacking and conversations were often heated.  Working through several near misses which could have cost the lives of the crew, Eileen succeeded in accomplishing all mission objectives and gently landed Space Shuttle Discovery on the dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Aug. 9, 2005.

#75: The Space Shuttle, Part I

Even before the end of the Apollo Program ended, work on the next generation space vehicle began. The result was the Space Shuttle, NASA's workhorse that would serve for 30 years, but was not able to completely live up to its pre-production hype.

Space Ghost: The Return of the X-37B, Part II

It's true -- Earth's near orbit is filled with all sorts of stuff. Most of it is mundane, and most people honestly don't think about it too often. But, just recently, a mysterious unmanned craft landed after more than 900 days out there in the inky depths of space, prompting Ben and Matt to ask: What the heck is the X-37B actually doing up there -- and why are other countries building their own versions of this ship? Before You Go: The War The Union And A Good Woman

Isaac Turner, Jr. was introduced to our program Before You Go by KBLA Talk 1580 host Najah Roberts. This 98-year-old war veteran appears with daughter Julia Hardman and recalls war stories from five invasions. Mr. Turner entered the Navy as a cook under Generals Eisenhower, MacArthur and Nimitz and when under attack, all hands were on deck. During one direct hit to their naval ship, Turner survived, but lost five of his best friends all at once. After the war ended Mr. Turner moved his young family from Shreveport, LA to Los Angeles where he at one time held two jobs while fighting for fair wages for women as a member of the UAW union.

Mr. Turner also built the rocket booster used in the early years of the space shuttle program. He worked on commercial jets and other aerospace projects while establishing a good life for his wife of 71 years and their four children.

This episode first aired on KBLA Talk 1580 in Los Angeles.

Jean Wright - From the Day I Looked at the Moon

Jean Wright - From the Day I Looked at the Moon

As a young girl, Jean would look at the moon at night and dream of working for NASA. That dream came true when she became one of 18 seamstresses that built (sewed), created, and repaired thermal protection, flight hardware, and parachutes. This dedicated team of women dubbed themselves the Sew Sisters.

Jean felt that getting her initial interview with NASA was a miracle. “The second time Kennedy Space Center came on the caller ID, I thought somebody was playing a cruel joke.”  It was no joke. Jean got accepted into the team.  She remembers telling her daughter, “Oh gosh, this is a call Mom's been waiting for her whole life.”  She shares the fascinating story of how her dream came true—from her initial meetings with the panel to her training to receiving her official stamp number that showed she was officially certified.  This number appears on every part she’s ever built.  (5:54-11:19)

Everything from the giant industrial sewing machines to the precision of the work to the materials used, pose a unique challenge to sewists. There’s Teflon-coated fiberglass used for the spacesuits. Silver Polyamide film that’s layered with Dacron mesh to create blankets. Threads made from quartz stones are liquified, then spun and twisted into thread.  Whatever the material, each one has special properties designed to perform a specific function while protecting the equipment and the astronauts. Jean goes into fascinating detail about how these unique fabrics, threads, and materials are created and combined to provide the ultimate protection against even the most extreme conditions. (11:20-27:00)

Because of her work at NASA and her interest in the Wright Brothers, Jean received a call from Neil Armstrong’s son, Mark, about a special project. The project involved precisely cutting and preparing nearly 200 pieces from historical fabric for auction. This fabric had flown in the Wright Flyer in 1903 and had also accompanied Neil Armstrong to the moon. Pieces that were three-quarters by three-quarters of an inch sold for $95,000 each, the ones that were an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quarter went for $175,000 each.

Whenever Jean gives a talk, she stresses the need for creative people at NASA because, as she says, “those are the dreamers of the world.” It was through channeling her own creativity that she came up with Sew Sisters Space Creations, which is an homage to her fellow Sew Sisters at NASA. She creates shirts, lanyards, and ties; everything she makes has a piece of flown payload bay fabric from Columbia, Discovery, or the Endeavor space shuttle.  ( 34:06-40:00)

Although retired, Jean is still involved in many NASA-related activities. As you listen to her story, you can’t help but be inspired by how a little girl from Michigan had the chance to live her dream. If you’d like to connect with Jean, you can reach out to her at her Sew Sisters Space Creations on Facebook or by emailing her at candylady187@msn.com

Tejpaul Bhatia And The First Commercial Space Station

Tejpaul Bhatia And The First Commercial Space Station

    We're going to space guys!

I grew up in the NASA area in Houston and my neighbor was Mike Mullane, an astronaut who flew the Space Shuttle missions in the 80's and 90's.  So the idea of talking to someone who is helping revive space exploration was beyond exciting for me.

Tejpaul Bhatia leads revenue generation and monetization strategy for the commercial development of space as Chief Revenue Officer at Axiom Space.  Axiom Space is a private space company developing its own module for the International Space Station and building the first commercial space station.

Axiom Space revealed its team of four first-time astronauts who have each paid $55m to spend eight days on the International Space Station launching on March 30th.  Axiom Space AX-1 crew will travel to the ISS in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and will spend eight days carrying out experiments. This is the first time an all civilian crew has visited the ISS at the same time.

We talk about the history of the ISS and what the station has given humankind,  what a commercial space station really means, what he says to those people that think spending money on space programs a waste of money,  how the private/public partnerships has recharged the program, why have an all civilian crew, and how space exploration is the one place in our world where there are no borders and where there is always hope.
