Some hunters prefer certain species over others, yet Scott Leysath, Ducks Unlimited magazine cooking columnist explains why hunters should approach every species the same way in the kitchen. Protecting Your Focus Time with Julie Yang, VP of Product at Spec

Protecting Your Focus Time with Julie Yang, VP of Product at Spec

This episode features an interview with Julie Yang, Vice President of Product at Spec. Julie’s extensive career took her to companies like Bloomberg, Bain & Company, and Bestow Life Insurance where she served as a software developer, management consultant, and product manager.

In this episode, Cassidy and Zach sit down with Julie to discuss prioritizing productivity, setting boundaries, and the meaning of life.

    Episode Timestamps:

(01:21): What Julie is working on right now

    (02:44): What Julie’s day-to-day looks like

(07:09): How Julie got into the industry

    (15:58): Rapid Fire Questions

    (29:16): Random Segment Generator

    (37:43): Cassidy’s Sage Advice

    -------------------

“In a hybrid or full remote work position, people try to demonstrate that they're on the job or that they're working. And so the most visible way to do this day-to-day, ends up being responsiveness. And so, people are always breaking their focus time to respond to a work chat, email. Or some people just like helping other people and interacting when they're at home with their coworkers through these chat programs. I think it turns out to be like a fire drill kind of way of working, where you just work on whatever pops up. Which I don't think is necessarily the most prioritized way of working.” – Julie Yang

    Show Notes

[00:00:54] The guys start off by telling stories about how being
quarantined has changed the dynamic of their lives with family, jobs,
     and social life.

[00:07:40] Andrew talks about he's been dabbling at static site
generators for years. He goes into his experience trying to componentize
it using React and Storybook. He also explains where his data lives for
     the static site.

[00:10:25] "GraphQL" is explained and how it essentially wraps your
markdown. It also has a tool called "Graphical" that builds on your
     queries.

[00:17:00] Nate asks how easy is it to build with Gatsby without
knowing React? Andrew explains and adds you need to figure out how JSX
     works.

[00:19:14] Nate asks Andrew how his experience went with
componentizing things that he wanted to do with CodeFund codebase for a
while and how far did he take it and what lessons did he pull out of it?

[00:21:11] Andrew mentions if anyone has heard of Mark Dalgleish who
works on Playroom and has the best memes. He also mentions how Mark's
belief is that you should make spacing itself a component.

[00:26:08] Andrew mentions the component library he was looking at
     called Braid-Design System.

[00:28:21] Andrew defines what "Storybook" is for anyone who may not
have been exposed to it. He says it's a pretty slick tool!

[00:35:20] Nate brings up the old Java days or the .net days and how
he feels the modern JavaScript ecosystem is even worse than the old Java
XML configuration days.. in which he gets called "Grandpa" by Ron.

[00:37:30] Nate talks about what's going on with his controller
library which contains three controllers right now and he has three
     lined up.

[00:39:01] The guys all talk about testing and frameworks and how they
     feel about them.

[00:47:00] Nate talks about a test suite he wrote called "PRY test."
Listen to hear why he created this and how he uses it.

[00:52:34] Nate touches on layered caching but for more info on this
check out Remote Ruby-Epsiode 70, where Nate talks more in depth about
layered caching stuff they did at CodeFund.

Wat Ik Wou Dat Ik Wist Over.. Fitgirls

#13: Bryn Jackson (Spec.fm) - building & scaling a podcast network to more than 5 million downloads

#13: Bryn Jackson (Spec.fm) - building & scaling a podcast network to more than 5 million downloads

Episode #13: Bryn Jackson This is the first episode of the second season of the Hacking UI podcast, 'Scaling a Side Project'. In this season we interview designers, developers, and creative entrepreneurs who built and scaled successful side projects  that we admire.

Today we are excited to have Bryn Jackson on the show. Bryn is the co-founder of Spec.fm, which features the popular podcasts Design Details, Developer Tea, and more.

Bryn calls himself a designer and developer, who builds things for designers and developers. After studying music at the Berkley College of Music, Bryn started his career working at a print company as a professional “Mac fixer”. He later started designing software solutions for common problems that he had seen, and was hired on as a UX designer. Originally from Minnesota, Bryn is currently located in San Francisco and also works at Figma, the increasingly popular design tool. This was an inspiring an educational discussion for us, as Bryn talked about growing the Spec community and how he built a network of multiple podcasts that hit the huge milestone of more than 5 million downloads.

We recorded this session during our trip to San Francisco, and Bryn was nice enough to invite us over to his apartment to record in his incredible studio. You can get a peak into the studio in the clip below:

    Announcement

You can sign up for the waiting list on the program's page and we'll notify you when registration opens!

    Key points from this episode:

    • Learn how Design Details was started, and how coincidences led to a great partnership between Bryn and Brian.
    • Understand how it was the thinking behind the interface as opposed to the actual interfaces themselves that motivated Bryn to launch his podcasts.
    • Find out how two competing podcasts turned into a collaboration and team effort, drawing on the strengths of each cast.
    • What was the strategic decision behind Bryn’s idea to grow Spec.fm the way that he did, through collaboration?
    • Learn why Bryn’s focus in partnerships is creating a good outcome, and that if he knows that it is possible then he will pursue the collaboration in anyway he can.
    • Get a behind the scenes look at how Bryn allocates his time between his side projects and working a full-time job.
    • Understand Bryn’s “no fear” mindset when it comes to taking on new technical challenges.
    • Learn what it means to build your podcast like a product, and improve it by listening to feedback from your audience.
    • Get a layout of the different types of sponsorship agreements, where to find sponsors for your podcast, and how to integrate it into your content so that it is right for your audience.
    • Find out how to best use Slack channels when building a community, and what limitations and problems to look out for.
    • What does it meant to “skate to where the puck is going”, and how can this help you to stay in the forefront of the design industry?
    • Learn what is next for Bryn, and what his biggest piece of advice is for designers looking to scale their side projects. Here are some follow up links from our talk:
    • The Spec Network site where you'll find the links to all of their podcasts (you can also sign up for the Spec Slack group through the box on the bottom of the site)

    • Bryn’s Blog
    • Design Details Podcast
    • Design Details on Twitter
    • Developer Tea on Twitter
    • Figma - A collaborative design tool. Bryn started using this tool as his main design tool a while back and now he actually works there and is in charge of building the community there. How awesome is that?

    About The Hacking UI Podcast
The Hacking UI podcast is hosted by Sagi Shrieber and David Tintner, a designer and developer who are also both entrepreneurs, bloggers, productivity/time-hacking maniacs, and all around tech geeks.

We started this podcast off with the 'Scaling a Design Team series' where we spoke with design leaders from top notch companies like Facebook, Apple, Invision, and Intercom, to discuss team structures, responsibilities, and workflows.

A few months ago we quit our day jobs to work on our former side project, Hacking UI, full time. So we found it fitting that our second season of the podcast should touch on that subject. The second season is called 'Scaling a Side Project', and we'll interview creative entrepreneurs that we admire in order to get them to share their tips, experiences and secrets to success.
