Peeling back the layers with Tim Finn

Peeling back the layers with Tim Finn

When you go to a concert what do you wanna see? Do you want to hear your favourite songs you already know every single word to …. or do you want to hear the new songs that may be your new favourites? Every set list by every band has struggled with this idea.

Singer-songwriter Tim Finn is giving the people both. After a decade or so off the touring circuit, he’s heading out on tour. The Lives and Times Of Tim Finn will have all the fan faves from Split Enz, Crowded House, his solo work, and everything in between.

    142. Pat Kuhtze

    142. Pat Kuhtze

Pat Kuhtze has been a professional drummer since the 1980s and has remained a busy and in demand session musician ever since.  He’s witnessed the music industry change in many ways and has continually evolved to stay afloat, raising four kids and racking up a long list of playing credits.  As the pandemic arrived Pat decided to steer away from some of his work to focus on projects he’s more passionate about.  He now has several projects on the go with Split Enz’ Eddie Rayner and a newfound excitement for music.

Neil and Sharon Finn’s musical hookups

Neil and Sharon Finn’s musical hookups

The Finns are a musical bunch. Neil has fronted the legendary Crowded House, sons Liam and Elroy play, and brother Tim led Split Enz and has made a heap of solo records.

Back in 2011, Neil’s wife Sharon joined him on a record too. They called themselves The Pajama Club and together with Alana Skyring from The Grates on drums, they made an album.

It was around then I asked them to Take 5. I remember wanting to move in with Neil and Sharon after this chat; they’re both so warm and laidback, and late nights at their place sound like a dream. From Talking Heads to Ladyhawke, settle in for some wonderful tales from this musical family.

    Talking Heads - ‘Heaven’

    Augie March - ‘Dog’s Day’

Connan Mockasin - ‘Faking Jazz Together’

    Ladyhawke - ‘Message To My Girl {triple j Like A Version 2009}’

The Smiths - ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’

Episode 148: Crowded House, "Don't Dream It's Over"

Episode 148: Crowded House, "Don't Dream It's Over"

We could listen to Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" on a perpetual loop, and we're investigating why. Along the way, we stop at their hit "Something So Strong" and a couple of '80s-related tropes we're always happy to see.
Our intro is by Laura Barger and Jack Baldelli, and our outro is by Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn, and Bic Runga. Want to leave us a voicemail? Call 646-389-0767. 71. Michael Burrows

    71. Michael Burrows

Melbourne songwriter Michael Burrows has landed on his feet, but not in the way he ever imagined.  Like most young musicians he wanted to be a well known and respected songwriter and performer, but the realities of life and bills forced him to problem solve.  As a response Michael set up a business writing and selling jingles, some of which have become part of the soundtrack of Australian life.  After some years away from pursuing his original music, Michaels' ambition was reignited when he got the chance to write and record with Neil Finn.  He then went to Nashville to record his latest EP and is now touring and promoting his new music.  Great guy, great chats and there’s even an off the cuff performance of his new song Designed To Love You.  Lean in.
