The Impact of Analytics in a Zero-Sum Game with Ari Kaplan, Head of Evangelism at Databricks

The Impact of Analytics in a Zero-Sum Game with Ari Kaplan, Head of Evangelism at Databricks

Whether you work in retail, healthcare, or CPG, data analytics is key to making your business stand out. You’re able to find new sources of data, synthesize them, and then work with business folks to get better and better insights. Even with all of the advantages analytics offers us, sometimes there’s hesitancy to invest in data. In sports, it’s the exact opposite. The use of data is felt immediately in game wins, player selection, and gate revenue.

Known as “The Real Moneyball guy,” Ari Kaplan has revolutionized sports through analytics and is a leading influencer in the area, as well as in AI and data. He helped create analytics departments for the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Baltimore Orioles. Ari is now Head of Evangelism at Databricks where his team helped the Texas Rangers clinch their first World Series title. Satyen and Ari discuss data analytics in sports, how data intelligence platforms are shifting the landscape, and the concept of generation AI.

    --------

“Even if we change nothing else, to be able to make better predictions of player development, finding what skills are better in the draft, predicting injuries and so on, that's part of the competitive advantages. How can we ingest this data? It's a ton of data. Terabytes of data every game, multiply that by dozens and dozens of teams at all levels around the world. Right now, teams are struggling to store it, process it on a daily basis. Teams that could do that faster will be an advantage. For listeners, if you're not in the baseball world, same idea. If you're in retail, CPG, healthcare, it's finding new sources of data, proprietary, nonproprietary. How could you synthesize it? Then, how can you start working with the business people to get better and better and better insights?” – Ari Kaplan

The Age of Prediction | Igor Tulchinsky and Chris Mason

The Age of Prediction | Igor Tulchinsky and Chris Mason

The Age of Prediction is such a fascinating book! After reading it, I really do think the job people should be preparing for is “data analyst” or “predictor”, because that's going to be used in every single industry, more than prompt engineers or AI coders - because AI is going to write its own code. Being able to understand what data to look at and why and how to make use of it, whether it's the medical industry or sports or stocks or insurance or art, this is going to be such a valuable skill to have, and it's a just beginning field. The creativity there is going to be amazing.

The Age of Prediction: Algorithms, AI, and the Shifting Shadows of Risk by Christopher Mason and Igor Tulchinsky is like a guidebook to what's happened, what's going to be happening, and all the different ways people use will prediction technology.

Igor has a $7 billion hedge fund, which analyzes millions of pieces of data around the world to predict stocks, whether something will happen tomorrow, or an hour from now, or 10 seconds from now.

Christopher Mason is geneticist and computational biologist who has been a Principal Investigator and Co-investigator of many NASA missions and projects.

I wanted to know: What is the state of this industry? How much can we really predict? How can we get better at it? What are the limitations? How close are we to manipulating DNA for disease gene removal? Can single-gene editing be done within a living human?

We talk about all of that, and then just have a fun time while I pitched different ideas. Enjoy our interview with Igor and Chris, authors of The Age of Prediction.

Ep. #48 The Story Behind SHOT:CLOCK - A 'Facts Only' Women's Sports Media Platform, ft. Mara Fitzgerald

In Ep. #48, Caroline shared the microphone with Mara Fitzgerald - who happens to be Caroline’s sister, and the creator of SHOT:CLOCK which is a 'facts only' women's sports media platform.

In August of 2018, Caroline and Mara were frustrated that women’s sports weren’t receiving more media coverage.

After a lot of brainstorming on a Fitzgerald Family vacation, SHOT:CLOCK was born as an Instagram account that would highlight the world of women’s sports by sharing news, data and relevant content.

While Caroline has since pivoted away from SHOT:CLOCK to go all-in on GOALS and The Business CaseFor Women's Sports podcast, Mara has remained steadfast in her work to grow SHOT:CLOCK into one of the go-to women’s sports media platforms for ‘facts only’ updates around women’s sports.

Today, SHOT:CLOCK has over 13K dedicated followers - all grown from the work Mara puts in in her free time - as her work as an architectural engineer in the construction industry remains her full-time profession.

In this episode, hear Mara & Caroline tell the whole story behind the creation of SHOT:CLOCK, and how Mara continues to make waves across women’s sports with every SHOT:CLOCK post she creates.

Ep. #23 Empowering the Influence of the Female Fan, ft. Jenna Mielnicki

In Ep. #23, Caroline talks with Jenna Mielnicki - the Senior Vice President and Head of Partnership Strategies for LEARFIELD - about the growing influence and presence of women within college athletics.

In March of 2022, LEARFIELD published the Empowering the Influence of the Female Fan Intercollegiate Fan Pulse Report, which leveraged tens of millions of data points to demonstrate the growing economic power and influence of female college sports fans.

According to the report, female fans account for 48% of college sports followers across social media; 32% of basketball and 34% of football viewers are women; women’s basketball saw the highest increase in followers across both genders from October of 2022 until March of 2022.

The report also points out that as women influence 85% of all consumer spending, brands would be wise to better understand and connect with female fans in order to drive their business.

In this episode, hear Jenna break down these findings and make the business case for why brands should invest in female fans - and women in sports.

Ep. #16 Women Won the 2020 Olympics (And the Data Proves It), ft. Amir Zonozi

Ep. #16, Caroline and Amir Zonozi, the CEO & Co-Founder of Zoomph, reflect on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and how women athletes dominated both in athletic competition - and when it came to social media reach & impact.

Zoomph is a leader in digital intelligence at the intersection of sports and sponsorship analysis. During the 2020 Olympics, Amir and his team measured the power of influence of Team USA's women athletes by analyzing the data around social media reach, impact and generated value. What they found was that women athletes largely preoccupied the online conversations during Tokyo 2020. The top moments included:

    • Suni Lee generating $6M in social value from 9 Instagram posts with an unprecedented 47% follower interaction rate.
    • Simone Biles' tweet thanking fans for supporting her decision to withdraw that generated over 100 million organic impressions and $2.7 million in social value.
    • Allyson Felix's name being mentioned on social more than 10K times with 52M impressions worth almost $900k in social value.
    • Katie Ledecky generated 8.5 million organic impressions from her Instagram, with an engagement rate of 12.83% - which was a full 2 points higher than the official @TeamUSA's Instagram engagement rate.

Even beyond the digital space, Tokyo 2020 was an absolutely glass-shattering Olympics for women athletes. Looking specifically at Team USA, 53.6% of American Olympians were women, and women won 66 of Team USA’s 113 medals - accounting for 58.4% of the medals won.

Women’s sports also received 59.1% of primetime coverage from NBC in the U.S., which was the highest percentage that women's sports have ever received in the history of NBC’s Olympic broadcasts.

In this episode, listen to Amir and Caroline discuss all of the ways in which women athletes won the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This episode was recorded on August 17, 2021. Click here to ready more about the data & insights from Zoomph.

    13. Why Should Sport Embrace Complexity?

    13. Why Should Sport Embrace Complexity?

Just like the economy, the weather, or traffic, sport is deeply complex. And we don't just mean that it has lots of elements or that it's difficult to understand, we're talking specifically about what's called a complex system – have a listen to our mini episode on this topic for a bit of a primer! When you're dealing with a complex system, you've got a whole lotta moving parts, interacting with each other and their environments in unpredictable ways, and there isn't a clear and simple relationship between what one individual element does and what the system as a whole will do. It takes a special approach to tackle complex problems, so how and why should we embrace complex systems thinking in sport?

Today, host Professor Sam Robertson speaks to friends, colleagues and experts Professor Paul Salmon and Dr Scott McLean. And this time, they're all chatting together at once!

Paul is the Director of the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where Scott is a Research Fellow right alongside him, leading the Centre's work on sport and outdoor recreation. Together these complex systems thinkers investigate complexity's rise in sport, the tools we can use to leverage it, and the risks of passing it up.

    12. What's Next in Sports Analytics?

Analytics is arguably one of sport's fastest growing and most exciting fields. It's something people in sport never seem to stop talking about, but do we all agree on what it actually means? To help sift through the mud and understand what we should really be asking of our sports analysts, host Professor Sam Robertson speaks to two industry legends to figure out where sports analytics can have the most impact and what's in the future for this evolving area.

First up is expert Sarah Rudd, who until recently was the Director of Analytics for none other than Arsenal FC.  Next, Sam is joined by the prolific David Sumpter – Professor of Applied Mathematics at University of Uppsala and author of popular titles 'Soccermatics', 'Outnumbered' and 'The Ten Equations that Rule the World'.

Together, Sam, Sarah and David take a hard look at the current state of sports analytics and what might be on the horizon.
