EP49: Playing the 'Long Game' w/ Joshua Grady

EP49: Playing the 'Long Game' w/ Joshua Grady

Returning guest speaker Joshua Grady is an entrepreneur, investor, and business consultant. He became the youngest NFL agent in 2016 at the age of 24 and, a year later, he started his own NFL agency. He recalls those early days trying to get his footing in as an agent several years ago, as “a wide eyed, 23 year old with an ambition to shift the narrative.” Having realized “that far too many athletes were being under taught, under-educated, and misused by agents for far too long,” Joshua was determined to make his mark on the world of professional football. Today, he is blessed to report that he has had a client make an NFL roster every year!

After reflecting on developments in life and business since his last appearance, Joshua states that he wants to be a resource for individuals “who desire to live contrary to the rest of society”: those who shun mediocrity and have an overwhelming urge to be successful in their own, unique way.

In this episode we talk all about Joshua’s journey so far as an agent and what he believes have been key to his relatively quick success in the industry. He preaches the long-game—that what truly counts for those with any type of ambition is making those often-tiny, periodic “deposits of success”. If you are someone who struggles to exercise patience and overcome instant gratification, this is the episode for you!

    Together, Joshua and Matt discuss:

    ●      Why your definition of “success” will continually change throughout your life

    ●      How to overcome your fear of failure

    ●      Why the secret to living is giving

    ●      What the successful do to get through the hard times when most people would quit

    ●      The importance of mentorship

    ●      Practical strategies to stay accountable when striving for big goals

    ●      Stop telling and start doing

    ●      What it means to strike a balance between humility and confidence

    ●      Why you need to OVERpromise and overdeliver

    ●      MUCH more!

    263. Hawi Keflezighi, Founder & CEO of HAWI Management

"I was nervous. But it was the kind of nervousness that really drove me to work as hard as possible, be as persistent as possible, and as thorough as possible."

Hawi Keflezighi is one of the greatest agents in running and track and field. As the founder and CEO of HAWI Management, Hawi and his team represent 30 athletes including Alexi Pappas, Nikki Hiltz, Aliphine Tuliamuk, and, of course, Hawi's brother, Meb Keflezighi. On this episode, Hawi talks about how — and why — he started his agency when he was still in law school, and explains what, exactly, agents do. He talks about being one of 11 siblings, and shares his family's story of emigrating from Eritrea to the United States. Hawi, who lives in Indianapolis with his wife and two kids, talks about what the American Dream means to him, and talks about why integrity is so important to him. There's a reason the Keflezighis are some of the best-loved people in sports, and this conversation is a perfect example of that.

The Locker Room: EP 5- We review the HBO Doc - The Scheme

The Locker Room: EP 5- We review the HBO Doc - The Scheme
This episode of The Locker Room we talk/ HBO’s NCAA basketball scandal documentary The Scheme that prompts many questions. EJ & Myles (MH) shares some of our questions as we debate some of the issues in this amazing show.

Christian Dawkins is a kid from Saginaw, Michigan whose life was all about basketball, the family business as we like to say. His father was a locally famous high school coach who led his team to two state championships; his brother was a young superstar-in-the-making when he tragically passed away from a heart condition. Dawkins who wasn’t that great on the court, so he applied his preternatural intelligence toward being a scout/recruiter/agent who bridged the gaps between talented hoopsters and the college coaches and big-name shoe companies who wanted them. Noticing the value of the Black Athlete at an early age, learned to play the game. On his way to being the next great thing in sport business, his drive and ambition was used against him.

Dawkins had started his own agency and, in a quest for financing, ended up getting used dealing with a couple of shady dudes, and a couple of other shady characters who were shady because they were actually, well, you know, undercover FBI agents. Eventually, Dawkins found himself in a hotel room with a bunch of FBI machine guns pointed at him, had him feeling like an R&B singer. Further complicating the story, Dawkins’ phone was wiretapped, and we all grew up on The Wire so we know that's not good. The wires, they’re an important part of this film, which presents them to the public for the first time and something that probably won’t make big-name university head coaches like Arizona’s Sean Miller and LSU’s Will Wade very happy.

Christian Dawkins is a man of significant moral complexity. Christian’s point of view, and he’s given the last statement of his view of people in the case, the NCAA, the FBI and the Coaches. He feels there was a cover up; possibly because he’s more right than wrong. And possibly because the FBI, the Southern District of New York and the aforementioned coaches wouldn’t participate in the movie, which is a sure sign there is more to the story. We hope there is a part two!

Has HBO ever made a bad documentary? Will it satisfy sports fans who are bummed that March Madness was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic? You have to watch and see if you haven't already!
