Ep. 169: Road Rage: Boston to Savannah

Ep. 169: Road Rage: Boston to Savannah

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! This week we turn several shades of green as we celebrate the emerald isle and St. Patrick’s Day… American style!!! We here in the good ol’ US of A have completely bastardized this whole affair into a day of wearing ridiculous amounts of green, pretending to be of Irish descent, and getting extremely drunk while listening to U2, The Cranberries, and Thin Lizzy. Two cities on the Eastern Seaboard in particular get especially ridiculous on this day: Boston, MA, and Savannah, GA. Hop in our shamrock mobile and take the journey with us to experience local rock n’ punk n’ metal from these two fine cities. Happy St. Paddy’s Day and enjoy some road rage!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we listen to some artist that represent Boston and Savannah! Here’s to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold pint and another one!

    Songs this week include:

    1. The Lemonheads – “Left For Dead” from Lovey (1990)
    2. Baroness – “Kerosene” from Purple (2015)
    3. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – “Devil’s Night Out” from Devil’s Night Out (1990)
    4. Kylesa – “Only One” from Static Tensions (2009)
    5. Bullet Lavolta – “Detroit Rock City” from Hard To Believe – A KISS Covers Compilation (1990)
    6. Black Tusk – “The Ending Of Light” from The Fallen Kingdom (2013)
    7. Dropkick Murphys – “Fields Of Athenry” from Blackout (2003)

Tune in, to discover how the Famine irrevocably changed the very character of Ireland, and maybe even the genetics of its inhabitants and its bizzare connection with pre partition undivided Bengal.

Bombay, Paris and the improbable victory for LGBTQ+ rights in Ireland

Bombay, Paris and the improbable victory for LGBTQ+ rights in Ireland

In the early 1960’s, a young man from the Varad village on the Konkan Coast of India goes to study medicine at KEM Hospital in Bombay. Continents away in Paris at the Pere Lachaise cemetery, lies buried one of the finest playwrights and poets of the 19th century. A song by the Irish Punk Rock band - The Radiators releases a song that features one of the most iconic spots of Dublin. What connects these three diverging stories? This week, in the fifth episode of the series, Ireland Untravelled, we travel from Bombay to Paris to Dublin to discover the improbable story of the victory for LGBTQ rights in Ireland. Tune in, and discover, that how in just one generation, Ireland went from criminalizing homosexuality to providing the LGBTQ+ community with equal marriage and adoption rights.

U2, Body Snatching and the Irish Way of Death

Three of the most iconic Irish bands walk into a bar - The Dubliners, The Chieftains and U2. They grab a few drinks, clear their throats and then proceed to play. This week, in the fourth episode of the series, Ireland Untravelled, we delve into the fascinating relationship the Irish people have with death. Tune in, and discover how Irish people deal with death, with bizzare sounding rituals and what is their contribution the art and science of medicine.

Trinity Long Room and the Soul of the Irish Nation

Trinity Long Room and the Soul of the Irish Nation

On 25th August 1992, the Serbian paramilitaries set fire to the National Library of Sarajevo. The library burned for 2 days and 2 nights before the fire could be bought under control. A few centuries prior in 1592, Trinity College was established in Dublin, and it became the first university in all of Ireland and UK to award degrees to women. But what could possibly connect these two disparate cultures across time and space? This week, in the third episode of the series, Ireland Untravelled, we arrive at the Long Room of the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin and understand how and why it houses the soul of the Irish Nation.

Gaelic and the stunning decline of the Irish Language

Gaelic and the stunning decline of the Irish Language

In 2016, a strange event unfolded in Cork County in Ireland. A staff member at the Flying Enterprise pub in Cork city was asked not to speak in Irish. Wait What? Not speak Irish in Ireland? This week, in the second episode of the series, Ireland Untravelled, we uncover the stunning decline of the Irish language, so much so, that it is less widely spoken than English today. We travel in time to the 12th century, and understand how political, social and economic changes catalysed the decline of a language, from which the Irish nation draws its identity. Tune in, and discover what the decline of a national language means, and the lessons it holds for the native language speakers of the Indian subcontinent.

Lost Treasures, Dynamite and the Irish Nation

Lost Treasures, Dynamite and the Irish Nation

What does an instant Scottish classic, published in 1824, a book which has captured the imagination of the world since have to do with the troubled history of Ireland and Northern Ireland? What does a designer of a lighthouse along the coast of the UK have to do with Alfred Nobel, the man behind the Nobel Prize? This week, starting a new series, Ireland Untravelled, we traverse the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and discover its connection with lost treasures, dynamite and the dream and reality of a unified Irish nation.

Jonny Pollock on Church Planting in Ireland

Jonny Pollock on Church Planting in Ireland
Most of us imagine lush green hills dotted by sheep when we think of Ireland. But it’s been said that the Republic of Ireland is the least-churched English-speaking country in the world. Research shows that Bible-believing Christians make up less than one percent of the nearly five million people who call Ireland home, and many towns have no evangelical churches at all. In the land of St. Patrick, secularism is growing. Many people don’t know or care about the Bible’s claims. Jonny Pollock joins me on the podcast today to discuss church planting in Ireland. Jonny is from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and became a Christian at the age of 21 after being given a Bible. Jonny and his wife, Julie, trained as nurses and served as missionaries in Mexico before returning to Ireland where they’re planting an Acts 29 church.

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! This week we turn several shades of green as we celebrate the emerald isle and St. Patrick’s Day! We here in the good ol’ US of A have completely bastardized this whole affair into a day of wearing ridiculous amounts of green, pretending to be of Irish descent, and getting extremely drunk while listening to U2, those single songs by The Cranberries and Thin Lizzy that everyone knows, and any host of Celtic-based punk rock (Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, etc…). Not on this episode!!! We are going to go deeper into true Irish rock n’ punk n’ metal that should be added to your St. Paddy’s Day playlist and celebrated all year round!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens.
