[Unlocked] It's a Damn Documentary! (feat. James Eric)

This is an unlocked episode from the Fruitless Patreon, originally published 1/12/2024. Enjoy!

James Eric (@cigarette_liker) joins Josiah to talk about Idiocracy (2006). Yes, it's a eugenicist movie. Yes, it is a product of the smug, upper class liberalism of the Bush years, and it was popular during the resurgence of that sentiment during the Trump years. But what does it mean now? And is it funny?

Matt Bors & Ben Clarkson, creators of the excellent sci-fi/action satire graphic novel 'Justice Warriors' join to talk about one of our main guys - Paul Verhoeven (aka Pauly V) and his landmark sci-fi/action satire 'Total Recall' starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale".

We discuss the film's long gestation period under several different producers and directors, most notably as a project for Hit Factory fave David Cronenberg. Then we go long on the film's startling prescience, it's themes of revolution against the extractive brutalist of an imperialist force, and Verhoeven's metatextual commentary on filmic reality as psycholgical mirror and wish fulfillment fantasy. Elsewhere, we discuss the dire 2012 Len Wiseman remake starring Colin Farrell and how it betrays and insults its audience by stripping away any and all subtext.

    STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK: Episode 122: Aliens!

    STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK: Episode 122: Aliens!

This week we looked at the cult classic, STARSHIP TROOPERS, which is a flick Mom can't believe she never saw. We both loved this one a ton.
We also looked at the low-budget gem, SLASH/BACK, from Canada, which talks about the friendship girls share as well as some aliens who land in a small Nunavut town. Mom went gaga for the scenery in this one.

There is lots of waffle up top in this one. If you want to jump to the movie talk, that starts at 26:18.

Next time on the main show we are looking at vamps with SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE from the US and RIGOR MORTIS from Hong Kong.

We are going to have one more special guest show on VIDEODROME and then we will have a couple of retrospective shows to finish out 2023.

Thanks for all your support, WoHos!
We love you and DON'T go into the basement!

Of course, Mom was talking about HAROLD & MAUDE.

    DDG Episode 184

MJC is joined by Josh Langford this week! We find ourselves falling into many tangents this episode, from the state of the MCU to Star Wars and then some.

We have reactions to the latest Twisted Metal trailer and EA’s confirmation that their Black Panther game is real. Playing and Watching sees the return of AEW Fight Forever and Starship Troopers for MJC while Josh tells us of his adventures with PSVR2 and his Steam Deck.

This week, MJC is joined by Chris Penwell to review AEW Fight Forever and Crash Team Rumble!

But before we jump into the reviews and everything else we are playing, we go over the news. Including, Valve removing games with A.I. art, sharpie-induced leaks from the FTC case against Microsoft and a bad game that killed a development studio.

    Episode 229: 'Venomous' (2000)/'Mad Heidi' (2023)

    Episode 229: 'Venomous' (2000)/'Mad Heidi' (2023)

We start the show with a tale of two box offices. It does not come as a surprise The Flash has underperformed at the box office. It was definitely a combination of superhero fatigue, the DCEU never catching on, and Ezra’s Miller's past problems, but what factored in the most? And how far up his own butt is Wes Anderson?

The passing of Treat Williams was a major blow to genre cinema. Treat has been around for decades and was a great leading man. We decided to cover one of his more recent movies. And who would have thought that the best Covid movie ever was made over twenty years ago?

Surprisingly, Venomous was never mentioned during the phase when everyone was locked at home watching movies about global pandemics. From lockdowns to masks to citizens being subjected to fake news, the film about genetically engineered rattlesnakes is like a crystal ball from 2000. The great use of stock footage, big explosions, and frightening snakes pushed it over the top.

They do not make movies like Mad Heidi. It is an exploitation movie pure and simple. A great mix of sex appeal and over the top violence, it will appeal to fans of old school grindhouse offerings without pushing away modern audiences. Few indie movies are as franchise ready and Alice Lucy absolutely shines.

We know what you're thinking. Surely they didn't watch Starship Troopers and make an episode about it. Surely if I listen to this episode it will be 57+ minutes of something else, and haha, April Fools. But no. We actually did watch Starship Troopers. How we got to this point is described in the episode! Check it out today!

S1: Episode 17: An Enterprise Child Orchestrates a Kidnapping to Get Out of Calculus Homework; Benevolent Skynet and Where is Chris Hansen?!

S1: Episode 17: An Enterprise Child Orchestrates a Kidnapping to Get Out of Calculus Homework; Benevolent Skynet and Where is Chris Hansen?!

Well we got a doozy this week. This is a pretty middle of the road episode, gotta say. Long story short, a childless planet kidnaps a few kids off of the Enterprise, including Wesley (they have kidnapper's remorse like immediately) but I guess it's bad manners to return kidnapped kids so they're just stuck with him?

No one seems to understand radiation, Chris Hansen is nowhere in sight, and we find out that children have a trombone value, which Riker would like to evaluate further as he wants to beef up his trombone collection. It remains unclear what the trade value of a child to trombone is though, so don't expect much of a resolution.

In fact, lower your expectations for any resolutions because except for some kid getting out of of three days of calculus homework, it's a pretty bland episode. And I'm fairly certain this has a really morbid resolution but Dave tries to talk me out of it.

Featuring: No Stardate WHERE AND WHEN ARE WE it's total chaos! Terrible, just awful slight of hand! Questionable parenting! The age old question, how many trombones is a child worth? The awkward incest question in the room that no one is talking about! Skynet if it got infected by something that made it super chill and just let humans eradicate themselves!
