Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard, Season 1.

Fans of Star Trek: Voyager were excited to see the return of Seven of Nine to the Star Trek universe in the first season of Star Trek: Picard. The Seven of Nine that we see in Star Trek: Picard, however, is quite different than the Seven of Nine we are accustomed to from Star Trek: Voyager. From Borg drone to member of the Voyager crew to Fenris Ranger, hosts Zachary Fruhling, Suzanne Williamson, and Liam Smart discuss Seven of Nine's overall character arc and the differences between her appearances in Star Trek: Voyager and the first season of Star Trek: Picard.

Season 5, Episode 2.5 “The Crying Game and Scorpion" with BackTrekking

Season 5, Episode 2.5 “The Crying Game and Scorpion" with BackTrekking
We're taking a different path this week as we feature a special episode of the BackTrekking podcast, hosted by Ka1iban and Gooey Fame! BackTrekking examines the real-world inspirations behind classic Trek episodes and this week we're putting the 1992 classic film "The Crying Game" up against the Voyager two-parter "Scorpion, Pts. 1 & 2"!

You already know the story. There's a scorpion that needs a ride and a frog willing to oblige. Halfway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog and they both start to drown, but they also have enough time for one last exchange:

Frog: Why would you sting me? You've killed us both!

Scorpion: I can't help it; it's in my nature.

Are we all slaves to our nature? Or does that only apply to arachnids who need to bum a lift somewhere? That's the question debated by the two pieces of media we're looking at today. "The Crying Game" is a 1992 film about LGBTQ culture in '90s London that was directed by a straight man and features a nominally straight male protagonist. "Scorpion" is about a peaceful exploration ship that is making its way home by facilitating a war between two of the galaxy's greatest foes. Being "true to yourself" is difficult when you're not sure who you really are, and none of us can ever be sure that we're actually the frog and not the scorpion.

On this episode, we talk about the ethics of interventionism, the necessity of writing "bad" characters, collectivism vs. individuality, making the tough decisions, subverting expectations, fluid space, Leo da V, we confess our professional shortcomings, another Pop-In(tm) about Sonic the Hedgehog, Kal tells his Crying Game story, and DAVE!

Season 5, Episode 2 “Scorpion, Pts. 1 & 2" (VOY) with Kelli Fitzpatrick

Season 5, Episode 2 “Scorpion, Pts. 1 & 2" (VOY) with Kelli Fitzpatrick
Prepare to remodulate your phaser frequencies as we go for a ride with "Scorpion, Pts. 1 & 2"!

Author, teacher, and community activist Kelli Fitzpatrick joins the show this week to discuss a pair of Star Trek: Voyager episodes that see Captain Janeway contemplating a deal with a devil she knows in order to defeat a much more terrifying enemy. Voyager's journey back to the Alpha Quadrant has finally crossed into Borg space and the crew must decide whether to press forward or give up their quest to return home. But the Borg have their appendages full with an invasion from another dimension, and Species 8472 could spell the end for Voyager, the Borg, and the entire galaxy!

The fourth season of every Star Trek show starts with a bang, and Voyager is no exception. Janeway and crew are faced with a near-undefeatable enemy in Species 8472, not to mention thousands of Borg or the intractable moral quandary of restoring Seven of Nine's humanity. "Scorpion" has our characters fighting tooth-and-nail with enemies and allies alike and struggling to remain human and humane in the face of disaster. On this episode, we talk about Voyager's "Best of Both Worlds", fighting against your nature, following the chain of command, the debate of collectivism vs. individuality, Janeway's skills as a mentor, giving aid to the enemy, the limits of consent, exploring the right to die, and making the "anti-Tuvix decision."

We also discuss recycling TNG plots, the lost art of the teaser, the unrealized 4th season of TOS, Chakotay channeling McCoy vibes, the coronavirus moving into your apartment, "Janekotway", the vagaries of the universal translator, "Borgager", the pastimes of powerful people, Sliders, Mom and Dad are fighting, "outer fluid", some slight Picard premiere spoilers, and Aaron has a few notes for Alex Kurtzman!

"Excuse me . . . what do the Borg need with a planet?"

Destroying the Caretaker, Killing Tuvix. attempted crew torture, not promoting Harry Kim, and breaking the Temporal Prime Directive. Captain Kathryn Janeway has had some outstandingly difficult command decisions to make with many often criticised by some within the fan base as poor decisions, and those same decisions applauded by others within the fan base.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Liam Smart, chat about Janeway’s command decisions and which they think were good and which they think were bad. They do not agree on one particular decision - surprise, surprise!

    11:59.

It is rare that we see an actor take time out of their contracted role to play another character in the same show. Kate Mulgrew does just that in 11:59 where she plays Shannon O'Donnell, an ancestor of Kathryn Janeway in the year 2000. 11:59 is an episode that does not stick in one's mind as a memorable; however, it does bring to light some interesting questions on ancestry, the accuracy of history, and your own legacy.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts, Liam Smart, and Zachary Fruhling, discuss what they think of 11:59, their own ancestry, history, new year resolutions, and with the turn of the new decade: what the last decade's legacy has been.

On this episode, we talk about the greatest movie of all time that a lot of people didn't really like when it was first released. We also talk about our mutual experiences of "giving up" on Voyager and the slow climb back, the hardworkin' HR Giger, perfecting a "haunted house movie in space", the varying generational appeal of Ridley Scott, the film's thrilling cinematic trailer, the lasting influence of "Alien", and making peahats scary!

We also have a Gooey Toe Update, Janeway shankin' fools, the Tom Skerritt Hour, a discussion of the artiness of video games and "video game" movies, #fillthetankup, the Franchiseamatron, chrome penises, skateboarding aliens, we disagree about "Us", Gooey calls George Lucas a war criminal, and Kal wants Watch Dogs chips in everyone's heads! Remember: the eighth passenger is death!

    264: Kale for Breakfast

    "The Cloud" Commentary.

When Voyager is in serious danger of running out of replicator resources (and Captain Janeway her morning coffee), Voyager changes course toward a resource-rich nebula that turns out to be a vaporous spacefaring life form. Join hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling for an audio commentary on the first-season Voyager episode, "The Cloud," the origin of more than one Voyager meme, everything from Chakotay-led animal guide vision quests to holodeck pool hustling with a French twist at Chez Sandrine.

Season 4, Episode 6 “Virtuoso" (VOY) with Asterios Kokkinos

Season 4, Episode 6 “Virtuoso" (VOY) with Asterios Kokkinos
Get ready to sing some royalty-free tunes as we warm up our pipes for "Virtuoso"!

Comedian, writer, and podcaster Asterios Kokkinos joins the show this week for a look at an episode of Star Trek: Voyager that explores the nature of humanity, artistic expression, and working on the railroad. The Doctor becomes a singing sensation when the crew meets a race that has never before heard music. As his fame increases and his captain expresses her reservations, the Doctor must decide if being human means following your dreams or fulfilling your responsibilities.

Voyager gets its own "Measure of a Man" in this episode, and both the Doctor's responsibility to the crew and the crew's responsibility to him as a sentient being are weighed in the balance. During our discussion, we talk about why ethical dilemmas are so entertaining and how sci-fi makes them more palatable, the "AI trolley car problem", how far the egalitarian nature of the Federation extends, whether an unjust deed can be considered moral, how the Doctor is the opposite of Data, and why Trek's problems are about us and not the future.

We also talk about what to do if your toaster makes a toaster, proving you can play the sax, Nintendo in the woods, the Doctor drawing boobs, the Napster planet, the "Musical Prime directive", Voyager as The Breakfast Club in space, Delta Quadrant trap music, Aaron wants to know how long you wait to introduce someone to the DMB, and Asterios compares Neelix to Han Solo!

What the hell does Harry Kim do, anyway?
