Marty Sheppard on Bighorn Sheep and Deschutes Steelhead

The Deschutes River and the John Day River flow north through the High Desert, two great steelhead streams in mule deer country where bighorn sheep inhabit the rim rocks and chukar call in the canyons. Marty and Mia Sheppard have carved out a life in the canyons guiding for steelhead and fishing for bass. We talk to Marty about how he became a hunter. And we hear about a bighorn sheep hunt during the fires of 2020. I promise you, this is a good episode. Thanks for listening.

What’s That Fence In the River?

What’s That Fence In the River?

This week on the EcoNews Report hosts Alicia Hamann from Friends of the Eel River and Tom Wheeler from EPIC discuss an experimental installation in the South Fork of the Eel River. Guests Marisa McGrew from the Wiyot Tribe's Natural Resources Department and Gabe Rossi and Philip Georgakakos, both research scientists with UC Berkeley, tell us all about the collaborative effort to install and manage a weir in the river. The primary purpose of the weir is to remove invasive pikeminnow from the river system and keep them away from prime rearing habitat for salmon and steelhead farther upstream.

Weir technology is ancient, it is a floating fence that allows researchers to monitor and manage fish populations as they migrate upstream into a trap. Native fish are released and invasive pikeminnow are removed from the river. A camera also monitors downstream migration to capture as much data as possible.

This collaborative project includes a large number of partners and community members named in the episode, and researchers are especially thankful to the landowner, Lost Coast Forest Lands, who is providing access to this site.

Skeena Estuary - critical salmon habitat

Skeena Estuary - critical salmon habitat

The Skeena River is the second largest salmon producing watershed in Canada and a critical part of it is the unique and highly productive estuary. The area deserves protection from future threats and is essential to the survival and resilience of salmon and cultures in this region. In this episode of 54 Degrees North, we learn more about this critical habitat as part of a series exploring salmon connections and resilience.

Interviews and insights from Yahaan (Don Wesley) and Dr. Jonathon Moore.

Music thanks to the regionally talented Los Gringos Salvajes, and art work thanks to Facundo Gastiazoro.

In this episode we sit down with Michael Swoboda and talk about hunting and fishing in Alaska and talk about lessons learned in Namibia and South Africa and in New Zealand too, and we talk this crazy career of mine, outdoor writing and hosting a TV show. This is what we might call a swap-cast, a conversation and interview he conceived for his podcast, The Average Alaskan Podcast, and now here it is on Ballistic Chronicles.

What’s Next for Eel River Dams?

What’s Next for Eel River Dams?

On this week’s edition of the Econews Report, Friends of the Eel River discuss developments in the thrilling drama of Eel River dam removal. It’s a story of injustice and opportunity— a 100-year-old water diversion that takes from one watershed to give to another, and the chance to correct the harms by returning salmon and steelhead to excellent cold-water habitat locked behind the dams.

Starring characters like the charismatic Northern California summer steelhead, the most athletic and endangered fish in the watershed; Congressman Huffman, who is working diligently to arrive at a win-win solution; and countless stakeholders all taking part in a process which will see the Eel River become the longest free-flowing river in the state.

Scotty and Matt Talk Fly Tying Innovation, Unique Fly Rods, Childhood Fishing Shenanigans, and More! "If you don’t know Matt, then a) you’re missing out and b) keep reading. If your car breaks down in the middle of the night then call Matt Callies; you’ll hear his car start before he asks you where he’s headed, and once he gets there chances are good that he will a) know what the problem is b) have the required tools in his truck to fix it c) notice that you’d get more out of your stereo if you’d let him give you the old amp he has just sitting in his garage and d) convince you that you should join him in heading out to the coast to swing up a salmon or two… after all, the flows are perfect, you’re both awake already, he just tied up a dozen beautifully gaudy bugs and he has a client whose donut shop opens in a few minutes and they make the best maple bars… That is Matt. Ep. 26 | Smallmouth and Slingin' Streamers With Mike Schultz

Scotty and Schultzy Talk Midwest Smallies, Great Lakes Fishing, Hockey, and More! Mike Schultz (known as “Schultzy” to most) is the owner of Schultz Outfitters Fly Shop & Guide Service specializing in Southeastern Michigan angling, instruction, and destination travel. Born and raised in the great state of Michigan, Schultzy has been immersed in the outdoors. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, he started guiding and working in the fly fishing industry full time. Logging countless hours on the water each year, Schultzy has developed a vast knowledge of Midwestern waters and beyond. The bulk of his guiding and angling takes place on his home waters of Southeastern Michigan; these rivers offer world class warm-water fishing. His angling travels have taken him from Patagonia to Russia and many places in between. Over the years with the help of the Huron River Watershed Council, Schultzy founded the Huron River Single Fly as well as the Huckin’ for the Huron. Both are annual fundraisers that take place on his home waters of the Huron River; Michigan’s Blue Ribbon Smallmouth stream. During the spring of 2014 Schultzy was honored with the HRWC Partner of the Year award.

    8000 Years on the Selway

    8000 Years on the Selway

For two summers, I have been able to row gear boats down the Selway to support this archaeology research.  My view has been that of the laymen, the novice archeologist, the boater.  At the end of each summer's trip, I have interviewed Jeff Adams of Interior West Consulting to hear the onsite interpretation of what was recorded over the past 8 days.  The stone artifacts tell a story.  The river and its perfect water add to the story.  While I find it stubbornly awkward to make assumptions about a human existence a few hundred years ago to several thousand years ago, I absolutely thrive when I am able to contemplate my short life and how I am like, and am different from the humans who came before me.  This show is two people sitting in an amazing place wondering about life beyond their own.  https://www.facebook.com/theriverradius/?ref=bookmarks       Also on Instagram at The River Radius, and https://www.theriverradius.com

    My First Steelhead

    My First Steelhead

    My First Steelhead

Location: Bulkley River, British Columbia, Canada

    Fall 2002

A discussion of the beauty and grandeur of the British Columbia landscape and the amazing steelhead that make the migration to their spawning grounds. I was very unprepared for my first steelhead trip when it came to equipment and especially rain gear. While fighting the fish of a lifetime almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It was a great experience and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me.

For those who are interested, I stayed at the Bulkely River Lodge. The people, food, and experience were second to none. I go as often as I am able now.

If you can’t make it all the way to Canada to chase these amazing fish there may be some closer to you. When it comes to tying flies for steelhead one of my favorite books is Steelhead Fly Tying Art & Design by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard.
