It's been almost a year but Comic Fights is back! Matt and his wife had their baby, so we pulled this one out of the vault. No news or reading/playing this week.

CATFA 079: The Shield Mark IV

Minute Seventy-Nine: From Carbon Polymer to Shield Test

Joining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.

In the seventy-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

We’re still in Q’s – I mean Howard’s – lab. Why is no one exploring the Tesseract-powered weapons we saw them bringing back? We discuss carbon polymers and if it’s the foundation of Steve’s uniform. And, of course, we get Cap’s shield. After a few other ridiculous designs first, of course. That sends us on a chat about vibranium and the nonsense concept it is. We also talk about the symbology of the shield.

Peggy decides to test the shield with some bullets. How do we take that? And does it work?

It’s a fun minute to chat about some serious comic lore. Tune in!

Minute Seventy-One: From Stepping Out to Arriving
Joining us today, we have Jonathan and Tabitha Carlisle!

In the seventy-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

We talk about Steve’s triumphant return leading the missing soldiers from the 107th. But how did they grow to be such a big group? Were there more troops there we never saw? Or were they gathering POWs along the way? And why did they take so long to get back? It’s a mind twister.

We also chat about the repeated shot of Steve at the head of the troops. Does that make sense?

And how about Gilmore? He’s finally stepping out of his tent, but what does that mean exactly? Tune in!

Minute Sixty-Three: From Morita’s Retort to Zola’s Recognition

Joining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season!

In the sixty-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

We talk a bit about Schmidt’s plans and Zola’s seeming change between here and in The Winter Soldier. Is there much logic to any of it? And why don’t they care more that they have to destroy this whole factory? Could they have figured out a plan that didn’t require them to blow it all up? How much has Hydra succeeded the way Marvel’s used them in their films and shows? There’s certainly plenty of talk about Red Skull and his motivations in this minute, including why all the self-destruct timers are set at seven minutes.

Why is it that Dum Dum Dugan seems to be the one given all the personality so far of the Howling Commandos? We do talk a bit about Gabe Jones, his role here, and his comic background.

We try to figure why Schmidt seeing Captain America triggers him to hit all the self-destruct buttons. What is it about seeing this person fighting tells him it’s a super soldier? Did the USO market him as a super soldier?

Lots of things that bother us in this minute. Lots to think about for sure. Tune in!

Minute Sixty-Two: From Morita’s Comeback to Schmidt’s Alarm

Joining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season!

In the sixty-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

Jim Morita clears thing up nicely with Dum Dum Dugan and it feels good and necessary. It’s also a reminder for us that Marvel isn’t suddenly just ‘woke’ – they’ve been confronting racism and other political topics from the beginning. We talk a bit about Morita’s history in the comics as well as Kenneth Choi’s IMDb breakdown. We also do the same with Bruno Ricci.

How big is the 107th? We gauge the potential size of the group and why Dum Dum and Morita might not have met before. Steve wants to find Bucky, but again – why does he want to do everything alone? Regardless, the lighting is gorgeous as he runs off.

We follow the Howling Commandos and the rest of the escaped POWs out into the compound where they take on the Hydra Troops. But why do some still use regular weapons?

We continue through the factory. Tune in!

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Steve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization. Is it just a stepping stone to The Avengers? Or is it a standalone masterpiece?

Captain America: The First Avenger is episode 56 of Superhero Century, the podcast where we watch every superhero movie of the 21st Century in chronological order.

Minute Sixty: From Outside the Hydra Compound to Inside the Hydra Compound

Joining us, we have Michael Gravagno, host of the podcasts The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year.

In the sixtieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

Steve knocks out a mouthy guard with his shield and we have some conversation about shield dynamics. Is it superpowered too? And why do none of the guards walking around the Hydra compound see him? Is that a superpower too? Or perhaps their masks actually don’t allow peripheral vision? Regardless, it gives us plenty of fodder for our conversation. We also talk about tanks, the compound itself, and how Steve manages to get inside.

It’s a sneaky minute. Tune in!

Minute Fifty-Nine: From Dum Dum to Compound Entry

Joining us, we have Michael Gravagno, host of the podcasts The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year.

In the fifty-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

We’ve been seeing the characters that make up the Howling Commandos, but at this point, only Dum Dum Dugan’s really been the focus. We chat about the character and Neal McDonough who plays him. And there’s talk about the Hydra mask design. Some mouths exposed, some not. Why? And do they recognize each other based on mouths? Meanwhile, Steve sneaks into the compound in the back of a truck and we’re here for it.

We’re definitely getting Raiders vibes in this minute. Tune in!

Minute Fifty-Eight: From Parachute to Prisoners

Joining us, we have Michael Gravagno, host of the podcasts The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year.

In the fifty-eight minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

Steve and Peggy continue their adorable banter and he’s got a great line as he then jumps out of the plane, parachuting down to the forests of Austria. But how does he know where to go? Are his mapping skills that super? As for Peggy, would you go running to the open door of a plane, under fire or not? We didn’t think so. The real question is... are they now off to Switzerland for some fondue?

We talk about the Hydra factory floor and ponder Zola’s role in all of this. How much is he buying into Hydra’s goals now? And how does he measure 60% more?

We’re closing in on confrontation between Steve and Hydra. Tune in!

Peggy runs after Steve, but not until after a brief reprimanding by Colonel Phillips. We get Mike’s thoughts on Tommy Lee. We also talk about the conversation between Peggy and Steve in the rain and the fact that it wasn’t scripted. Were they feeling they needed more to build the Peggy/Steve relationship? And we continue trying to figure out why Peggy and Howard are here.

Joining us on the show today, we have Travis Bow and Robin Burdge!

In the fifty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

Phillips remembers Bucky’s name but there’s a grammatical issue and we’re here for it. We talk about the relationship between Colonel Phillips and Steve Rogers, and wonder if there’s enough of Phillips to really call him a change character. Why is he being so ridiculously diminutive to Steve? But he does give Steve and idea. And Peggy’s face sure seems to say that the filmmakers’ intentions weren’t to have us read that Peggy came here just to get Steve moving. So confusing.

CATFA 051: Was That Scott Lang’s First Job?

Minute Fifty-One: From A Punch in Chicago to A Quiet Response

Joining us on the show today, we have Movies by Minutes regulars Travis Bow and Robin Burdge!

In the fifty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

We talk about the Menken/Zippel song some more and discuss descants and the genius word-smithing of things like ‘napped in America’ to rhyme with ‘Captain America.’ Steve gets his own comic book and movie series, and we talk about those as well. The comics, in particular, give us a lot to discuss – the joy of kids reading them, the changes to the cover, the time it came out, the ad on the back.

We do find Steve in the movie theatre watching himself in the movie. Does no one recognize him? And how great would it have been to have a callback to our Loud Jerk? But Steve’s so popular that he’s regularly signing autographs, including for one beautiful fan. Could she be Peter Quill’s grandmother? Why is that moment so emphasized?

We love the grand finale to the show, and the transition to Italy is perfect.

Plus, we have a deleted scene showing Bucky, Dum Dum, and Gabe fighting Nazis then getting caught by Hydra.

We promise, you won’t be able to get ‘Star-Spangled Man’ out of your heads. Tune in!

In the forty-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...

We talk about Hutter’s, Schneider’s and Roeder’s expectations for this trip and what Schmidt planned from the start. We also talk about the Tesseract cannon that Schmidt uses on them and what it’s actually doing to them. Plus, we discuss what it leaves behind. From there, we move into a conversation about the Hydra salute and the Hydra comic origins. We debate if the outfits should’ve remained green and goofy like they are in the comics and draw a connection between their salute and Muppets Most Wanted. There’s some discussion about Dr. Zola’s reaction and where he stands with this whole Hydra thing. And we end the conversation returning to the SSR Base where Steve’s sullenly giving blood.

Schmidt’s kicking Hydra into high gear and we’re here for it. Tune in!
