Maximizing ACL Recovery with a Strength Coach with Bryan Woolson

Bryan Woolson is a strength and conditioning coach with lots of experience in the field. He has specialized knowledge on ACL rehab for athletes and how to optimize treatment to help them get back to sport. Today we discuss the functional tests he has his athletes perform to test their readiness for return–to-play. Bryan also shares his background working with athletes after ACL injury, the various readiness protocols he uses, as well as his strategies for helping athletes reach their full potential after returning from an ACL tear. We will also explore best practices when it comes to pre-injury preparation and injury risk reduction that coaches and PTs can employ with their teams to reduce an athlete’s risk of injury.

Ep 27: Another CrossFit Open is in the Book, How Can I Improve?

Ep 27: Another CrossFit Open is in the Book, How Can I Improve?

If you follow CrossFit closely, you were probably involved in the Open the past few weeks. Either you were doing the workouts, judging, cheering, browsing the leaderboard, or sharing memes with your gym friends. You may also see some motivational posts about pushing your limits or stepping out of your comfort zone, and "sign up now" (to receive a $25 voucher from an overpriced brand).

In this episode, veteran Angus (@anguscheung_hk) invites another CrossFit coach and Open rookie, John Castillo (@johnbcastillo), to share their takes if Open 2023 as a balanced test in skill, conditioning, strength, and adaptability. CrossFit IQ is also a debate topic and important in the long run.

Scoreboard is one of the key elements of CrossFit, but it sometimes distracts you to focus on things that you need to work on. Angus and John also discuss how you should change your training style, order, and mentality to improve your performance and reach the next level.

    Simon Booth

    Simon Booth
On this episode we are joined by Simon Booth. Simon was a PT who has gone on to use his experience in media and videography to help coaches in the fitness industry to create video content to act as resources for their current clients, and to attract new clients in the increasingly more competitive online world.

    Dr. Andy Galpin

    Dr. Andy Galpin
On this Episode we are joined by Dr. Andy Galpin. Dr. Galpin an author, a scientist, a teacher and a coach, who has a Phd in Human Bioenergetics and runs the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Lab at California State University. Beyond the huge depth of clinical research that Dr. Galpin is involved in, he's also worked with the likes of Mike Lee, Conor McGregor and Stefi Cohen. I asked Dr. Galpin to come on and discuss wearable fitness tech- it's a subject that has been greatly requested, and to my mind there's no better expert than Andy, having published his book 'Unplugged', alongside Brian McKenzie a few years back- by far one of my favourite reads on the matter. There's plenty here to think about- from HRV monitors, to heart rate training and sleep apps, and what we really set out to do was give you some pause for thought on how you can use these devices, without letting them use you. Enjoy!

    David Jackson

    David Jackson
On this episode we are joined by David 'Jacko' Jackson. Founding member of 'School of Calisthenics', alongside previous guest Tim Stevenson. Jacko is an Oxygen Advantage master breathwork coach, the juicy topic which was definitely the theme of our discussion. Jacko talks us through how discovering breathwork helped him come back from an injury which had seriously disrupted his quality of life, and which then lead him down the path of upgrading his fitness, using the power of the breath, and how he's now helping others to do the same. We covered some serious ground, talking about the mechanics of breathing, common disfunction, and how you can make huge changes in your very next workout. This one definitely warrants a part two, and believe me- it's already in the works.

    Ebenezer Samuel

    Ebenezer Samuel
On this episode we are joined by Ebenezer Samuel. Ebenezer is a trainer, a writer and the acting fitness director of Men’s Health USA. Eb and I obviously have a lot of professional parallels and it was great to really get into fitness in the media, the role of print media in the age of social media; the importance of long term thinking when we’re in a position to reshape culture and our thoughts on the nuance of sensational headlines and cover stories.

    Lee Amico

    Lee Amico
On this episode we are joined by professional nutrition coach and owner of the Monday Muscle coffee house and nutrition bar Lee Amico. In this live chat, we answered a series of nutrition related questions that had come in via social media.
