    Understanding “Stubbornness”

    Understanding “Stubbornness”
In this post, I want to talk about stubborn dogs. Here’s the thing: even if you think you have a stubborn dog, I doubt it. You might, because they do exist. But I highly doubt that you have one. It’s common for me to be working with a client and hear something like, “Oh gosh, my dog is so stubborn!” This is a frequent claim that owners make about their dogs. Sometimes I’ll agree with them—but not often. When I call a dog “stubborn,” this is what I mean: the dog fully understands what you’re asking, and then chooses not to listen or pay attention. Makes sense, right? It’s not a crazy concept. But the reality is that very few dogs actually know what’s being asked of them, and so many owners think their dog knows exactly what’s being asked of them! So when owners complain that their dog knows what they’re asking but doesn’t do it, they almost always mean that their dog is clueless! The dog hasn’t been taught very well. Maybe the dog understands what “come” means in certain situations, but once they change the setting or add a distraction he is confused. Now they aren’t coming when called. The dog isn’t stubborn, he just hasn’t been taught how to deal with distractions or to obey from a distance. A dog who is truly stubborn understands the command, yet doesn't obey it. The reason this is so rare is that if a dog does understand what’s expected and desire, they usually want to do it. Most dogs enjoy work and are totally willing to please. They enjoy the camaraderie that comes from working together with their owners. Of course, some dogs are little knuckleheads that know what you want but won’t do it. I see this situation go awry often. Frequently, owners say that their dogs know what they want because of a facial expression. They might say to the dog, “Hey, come here!” When the dog doesn’t, they go after it. If the dog appears to be sorry, then they say, “See, he knows what I was talking about.” That’s not true. The dog simply understands that its owner is upset. He’s trying to say “Sorry, I would have come if you had told me that’s what you wanted—but you didn’t.” Other owners might say “He heels it a lot, just not off-leash” or “He can sit, but he doesn’t when guests come over.” They think that’s because their dog is stubborn. In reality, it only seems like the dog was taught to come or stay. The second you add those other elements that you didn’t spend any time teaching about, the dog doesn’t understand. It’s not because he’s stubborn. Stubbornness is active; not understanding is passive. If your dog is being disobedient, it’s probably because of the latter. Will you come across stubborn dogs occasionally? Yes. But out of the dozens of dogs that I’m currently working with, only two or three of them are actively stubborn. If you frequently find yourself calling your dog “stubborn,” slap yourself on the wrist and recognize that there’s probably something you’re not teaching. Only then can you start teaching your dog better!

Women's Hormonal Health and Shedding Stubborn Weight with Naomi Judge

Women's Hormonal Health and Shedding Stubborn Weight with Naomi Judge

Welcome! My guest today is Naomi Judge, who is a naturopath and clinical nutritionist. She is an expert in women’s hormonal health and weight loss from  Sydney, Australia. Naomi specializes in helping women with elevated estrogen levels and thyroid disorders. She has helped thousands regain their vitality and shed unwanted weight with her program, Breakthrough. She works with clients on a one-on-one basis and offers detox and diet plans. Let’s jump right in with Naomi!

Naomi discusses the following about her work:

    • Naomi has been seeing clients as a naturopath since 2007, when she began observing patterns in women’s weight issues.
    • She decided that there must be more going on other than the less food/more exercise connection.
    • The commonalities she noticed, and now focuses on with her clients, are hormones and food intolerance.
    • Her Breakthrough program shoots down the old theory that eating less calories and exercising more will always yield weight loss.
    • Naomi says focusing on the macronutrients in our diets is critical. She recommends finding the right balance of fats, proteins, and carbs in three meals/daily with minimal snacking.
    • Naomi does a lot of food intolerance tests with her clients; the most common foods to remove are gluten, dairy, soy, and eggs.
    • Naomi shares recommendations for women in balancing their ratio of fat, protein, and carbs. Half of your plate should be vegetables!
    • Regarding exercise, Naomi says that most of us should STOP doing what we’re doing—because it’s NOT working!
    • Naomi’s exercise recommendations focus on “yin” activities such as walking for enjoyment, yoga, pilates, stretching, and swimming. Strength training and cardio are added in sparingly.
    • Listening to your body and being in tune with it are crucial. Too much intense exercise can be bad for your health!
    • Hormone balance is a critical piece of women’s health, and estrogen or testosterone dominance can be determined by where your body collects weight.
    • The key to thyroid health is diet and balancing blood sugar. Naomi recommends iodine, selenium, and zinc in our diets.
    • The relationship between cortisol and weight gain is proven. It’s determined by how your body regulates blood sugar and deals with stress.
    • Ridding the body of toxins is vital to optimum gut, liver, and kidney function. Naomi explains how her program is a gentle approach to detox and cleansing.

You'll Regret Having "No Regrets" - Ep. 125

You'll Regret Having "No Regrets" - Ep. 125

    We all have regrets.

    • Some are life-changing
    • Some are minor and probably insignificant, but the still play a role in shaping our character and identity.

I believe we have more regrets as we get older, not just because we’ve experienced more in life and obviously we regret a certain number of those experiences, but also because we gain wisdom from our past regrets. This wisdom helps us better identify previous mistakes or regrets, and hopefully some potential future ones as well, keeping us from actually experiencing those.

We may have the same experiences in our memory, but now we’re wise enough to regret them.

There also may be repercussions as we get older that weren’t as obvious earlier in life.

Our children are a great example of this one. Over or under disciplining our children may not seem like an issue at the time, but the outcome in their lives will show up when they’re in their 20’s and, because you wanted to be the ‘cool dad, you didn’t teach them self-discipline.

Financial decisions may be another one that doesn’t really show up in a big way until you’re in your late 40’s and realize you really SHOULD have put something into your retirement account when that financial adviser told you.

So really, regrets are an indication of wisdom.  Whether we’ve already had that wisdom and ignored it, or we developed the wisdom and now wish we had done something different.

    Healthy Attitude tip 1:

Be grateful for  your awareness of regrets. You’ve grown.

Imagine if you had done the same things, taken the same actions and ended up with the same results, but you had no regrets about it.

I think the “No Regrets” mantra is one born out of ignorance and sometimes even stubbornness

We don’t want to ever admit we did something wrong, so we champion this “no regrets” thing.

There are websites devoted to tattoos that were meant to say “no regrets” but, ironically, they were misspelled.  There’s even one featured in the movie “We’re The Millers” where the daughter introduces her new boyfriend who sports a tattoo on this chest that says “No Ragrets.”

Regret actions… but don’t let regret become part of your identity.

Analyse your regrets so you can clearly define where you took a bad turn. If you don’t know what you did that lead to your regrets, you won’t know what to avoid in the future. You may find yourself riddled with extreme caution and taking no action rather than taking well thought out and wise action.

I regret riding my bike down a giant dirt hill when I was 5 or 6 years old because it left me with a broken arm.

    • I don’t avoid riding bikes now.
    • I don’t avoid riding bikes down hills
    • I do avoid riding a bike on a hill that’s beyond my skill level.  I was 5 and could barely ride on a straight paved road and there I was trying to keep up with the older kids, riding down a giant rocky dirt hill.  Ouch.

    Healthy Attitude Tip 2:

Clearly chart the path to your past regrets. Don’t generalize.

You probably realize, your’e not the only one with regrets. We’ve all had them. But, we assume our regrets are worse or more consequential in life.  But they're usually not. This is the downfall of today’s communities.  We spend time with the fake families on TV and the filtered friends in social media, instead of gathering in our neighborhoods with other real people who can openly share of their mistakes.

One thing I don’t regret is being part of a faith community that didn’t gather every Sunday to hear one professional member of the community give a very entertaining prepared speech or sermon. In our community, we all gathered to talk about life, share food and enjoy some adult beverages.  Conversations ranged from politics, careers, family, hobbies, and everything else.  We all learned from each other’s REAL LIFE experiences.

They say there’s only one thing better than learning from your mistakes, that’s learning from someone else’s mistakes.  The same lesson without the same pain. Seek the advice of those who are older and have wisdom.  We’ve already said we can learn from regrets and we tend to have more (or be aware of more) of them when we get older.

So ask some people older than you, “What do you regret?”

    What do  you regret?

I would love to knwo what regrets you may have in life and what you've learned from them.  Would you Tweet it to me @PDesmondAdams and use the hashtage #successforfailures if you want to be able to track others who comment.
