    17. Michael Byrd: An Oatmeal Recipe Success Story

    17. Michael Byrd: An Oatmeal Recipe Success Story

Jermel met Michael Byrd when he was a sophomore at Porter Gaud High School. Mike was in the first group of student-athletes who went through Jermel's Oatmeal Recipe program. Jermel worked closely with Mike and his parents to assist them in developing a plan to help Mike succeed at the next level.

Mike was able to secure a scholarship to Erskine College. Today, Mike is doing great things in the medical industry especially where it comes to student-athletes.

In this episode of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast, Michael Byrd shares his stories, trials and tribulations during his time as a student-athlete. Tune in!

Mike's bio: "I grew up in Charleston and attended Porter-Gaud School. I started  training with Jermel in high school and also played for Team DAE for my AAU basketball. Training with Jermel and following his Oatmeal Recipe expedited my development as a basketball player and enabled me to compete at the NCAA Division II Level at Erskine College (Due West, SC). For my academic work in college, I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry and maintained a 3.98 GPA graduating Summa Cum Laude.

My proudest accomplishments include being named a Conference Carolina’s Murphy Osborne Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Finalist and being the first basketball player in Erskine College history to graduate valedictorian. I recently earned my M.D. degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and have started my residency in Internal Medicine.  I have specific interest in preventing and treating musculoskeletal injuries in all patient populations including athletes."

    14. Jay and Tyler Christmas: The Hard Work Pays Off

    14. Jay and Tyler Christmas: The Hard Work Pays Off

Dad, Jay, and student-athlete, Tyler, return in Season 02 to share their stories. Tyler is from Summerville, South Carolina and earned a scholarship to Duke University. In Season 01 of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast, Tyler was a senior in high school and now he's a freshman at Duke.

Our audience can learn a lot from Tyler Christmas about the trials and tribulations a freshman collegiate athlete goes through. In high school, you have a structured schedule you simply have to stick to. But in college, you get to create your own schedule. You have to have the determination and drive within yourself to get up early to workout and stay up late to study.

Tyler shares that he feels bad for the students who didn't get up at 6 am in high school to work out like he did. Now they are struggling trying to adjust to long days and grueling workouts. Tyler's dad, Jay, better prepared him for the life of an athlete as most parents don't realize how much work it takes to succeed at the next level.

Parents can learn a lot from Jay Christmas. He shares his strategies to help kids get motivated on days/weeks/months they don't want to work hard. Sometimes during adverse situations kids don't want get up early, or work out or compete. Hear from a student-athlete and their parent about, not only how to get to the next level, but how to succeed at that level and find continued success.

    12. Mike Hostilo: King of the Pivot (Repost)

    12. Mike Hostilo: King of the Pivot (Repost)

Now that Jermel President and the DAE Foundation are partnering with the Mike Hostilo Law Firm, we are sharing Mike's podcast episode again. You can hear one of Jermel and Mike's earliest conversations right here on the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast! We had no idea at the time such great things would come from our meeting, but we aren't surprised given the importance COMMUNITY plays in both our lives.

Mike moved to Beaufort, South Carolina in the 7th grade. Mike's dad is a marine and Mike grew up in Laurel Bay Military Housing.

"In military communities, it was really important for the parents and the kids to be involved in youth sports."  Just like us, you've probably seen commercials for the Mike Hostilo Law Firm around town. But did you know, Mike was a student-athlete in high school.  Attorney Mike Hostilo is an excellent example of a former student-athlete pivoting into an extremely successful career off the field.

The PIVOT is a power position in basketball. If you're in the pivot, you're in the 3RIPLE 3HREAT. You have three choices: pass, dribble or shoot. In basketball, you have seconds to make this position. In life, you have a little more time to come to a decision.

Most middle and high school student-athletes do not go on to become professional athletes. Listen to Mike Hostilo's story to learn when he pivoted from athletic dreams to professional dreams and how he utilized the skills he learned on the field to grow a successful law firm.

In 2022, the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast is going in a different direction with a focus on psychology. For example, this year we will have guests on the podcast discussing mental health when it comes to the student-athlete. With professional athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka opening up about their mental health struggles, it’s time we bring this issue down to the middle and high school levels.

    8. Steve Harris: Earning the Right to Shoot the Ball
Our featured guest on Season 02, Episode 08 of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast is Steve Harris.

Steve was a great STUDENT-athlete. While most athletes transfer schools due to a lack of playing time or coaching styles, Steve transfered because of EDUCATION. In Steve's point of view, he thought education was more important than athletics which is very true!

Steve grew up in a home filled with aunts and uncles. He was the last one to receive anything from food to clothes.

His uncles took him to the park at 6, 7 and 8 years old. They played basketball with him and treated him like an adult. He had to earn the right to shoot the ball.

“That hunger and that edge was instilled in me just because I was last. I didn’t want to be last forever.”

Tune into this episode of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast to hear Steve Harris share about athletics, education and making sacrifices.

    5. Monte Lee: From Cougar to Tiger

    5. Monte Lee: From Cougar to Tiger
On this week's episode of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast, Jermel interviews Head Baseball Coach of the Clemson Tigers Baseball Team, Monte Lee! Monte previously coached at his alma mater (and where he first met Jermel) College of Charleston. Growing up Monte was a well-rounded athlete partcipating in baseball, soccer, football, basketball and wrestling at different parts of his life. Injuries dictated what sports he could participate in leaving baseball as a safe option. We are sure many athletes can relate to needing to choose a specific sport due to certain injuries.

Obviously, Monte's experience in the athletic world has molded the way he coaches. For example, "I’ve used that experience from my recruiting in recruiting kids in my 20+ years coaching. Who wants you the most? It’s not necessarily the school or the program. It’s the coach that’s recruiting you. Are they recruiting you harder than everybody else because they really want you to come play for them? They’re probably going to give you the best opportunity."
