Episode 207: What Are Apple Unleashing Next and YouTube Enhances Accessibility

Episode 207: What Are Apple Unleashing Next and YouTube Enhances Accessibility
What better way to kick off this week’s episode of Double Tap Canada than with a rant from a frazzled Marc Aflalo? A houseful of kids and broken wifi: it’s a perfect storm. News of another Apple event should cheer him up, but what do we think Apple are going to unleash? Next, Shaun tells us how he’s recently taken his first steps into the scary world of cryptocurrency. But what app did he use, and how easy and accessible was the process? Sadly, Steven seems to have forgotten the gadget he bought this week, but he is eager to buy a new laptop. The only thing holding him back is the perfect keyboard. There’s also announcements from YouTube regarding new accessibility they are introducing to their service, including Live Captioning for Live Streams, multiple audio stream support and auto subtitle translation. Obviously the addition of multi stream audio means that content creators could add a descriptive track for their videos, but Shaun wonders how many will actually do that? We wrap up the show with some public service announcements regarding why updating is bad, some great learning resources for Windows 11 from Microsoft and your emails.

    171: "Paris Vacation, Part II"

    171: "Paris Vacation, Part II"

How long can we talk in circles about Stefan’s origin story? What is the most sexual fruit shape? And who wrote the script for this podcast? We get John’s reaction to these questions and more as we watch Season 8, Episode 2 of Family Matters.

Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.

#118 Learning English with Movies with Cara Leopold

Cara Leopold helps adventurous expats and intrepid travelers understand fast-talking native English speakers, themselves, and the world around them by watching and discussing movies.

In this episode, I asked Cara all about her experience with learning and teaching languages using movies. We spoke a lot about listening skills and the use of subtitles, and I'm sure you'll like this one.

28: Mermaid Tails Under and Above the Sea (The Litte Mermaid VERSES Ponyo)

28: Mermaid Tails Under and Above the Sea (The Litte Mermaid VERSES Ponyo)

Do mermaids exist in the real world? We don't know, we don't have all the answers, but they exist in movies! This trip down the rabbit hole takes Amber and I above and below the sea. We first visit the merfolk of Atlantica and talk about is Triton really good at is job and how Eric was a good change from past princes before the Disney Renaissance.
We then take a trip to Japan to hear a different take on the classic fairytale written by Hans Christian Andersen. We get to see how another culture takes a well known story and interprets it in a way that you might not expect. Studio Ghibli always makes a beautiful movie and this is no exception, and they took the story and made it not only good for children but also emotions that a young child could understand: Love. If you have never see a Ghibli movie, i think this would be a good place to start. So come join us in some talk about Mermaids, have some hiccups, and Amber shows that she is pretty good at hosting.

Big Kids: ‘I’m Telling The Kids We’re Still In Isolation’

Big Kids: ‘I’m Telling The Kids We’re Still In Isolation’

Remember when your weekends were filled with the kids Saturday sports and birthday parties… Then along came COVID and you were FREE again! Well, Holly wants to hold onto that freedom, so she’s decided to tell the kids there’s still restrictions. Whether they’ll fall for it or not is an entirely different story.

And, parents are throwing parties for their kids because they made it through isolation… One parent even hired a little Shetland pony! Yay or NAY? See what we did there?

Plus, Daddo nailed parenting this week when he forced his kids to watch the Korean movie “Parasite”, but they had to put down their phones and ACTUALLY watch it… mainly because it had subtitles. A nail AND a hack in one!
