    Rum Basics

    Rum Basics

Let's forget about mezcal for a moment and think about sugarcane spirits, better known as aguardiente by some and rum by others. In this episode I had the pleasure to chat with Keegan Menezes, a rum lover, which had long and detailed answers to all of my silly questions. Here is a small bio of him as written by the man himself:

Keegan Menezes started out as a cocktail bartender when he was in Oxford at university, although he left his professional cocktail-making career behind he has remained part of the London Cocktail bar scene. He is known for his depth of knowledge across all spirits categories including and his favourite and the best spirit – R(h)um.

He has traveled around the English and French Caribbean, visiting Distilleries; enhancing his personal relationship with the distillers and of course, tasting Rhum/Rum. He uses his knowledge to help bars and London bartenders understand all the different aspects of the Sugarcane spirit category, and how they can be used in Cocktails and as straight-up spirits.

Keegan has consulted with various rum brands on blends, packaging and market strategy.

Episode 1 of 23: Cane in pain

Episode 1 of 23: Cane in pain

    Episode 1 of 23

    Cane in pain

In this episode of ‘We’ve bean around the block’, we re-visit the topic of dry beans in rotation with sugarcane. This episode follows a previous podcast (Episode 5 of 21) with advanced thinking of how to incorporate beans into a rotation with sugarcane. Host Antony Jarvie discusses rotation ideas and practicalities with forward thinking cane farmer, Deon Schröder. The problem with incorporating dry beans into a sugarcane rotation is always going to be the herbicide residues from the cane component. The shrinking crushing capacity in the industry is forcing a reduction in sugarcane output, which for the first time, provides an incentive for a multi-year and or a multi-crop rotation strategy. The idea to bring in glyphosate tolerant hybrid maize as a first rotation crop and then to follow this with beans in the second season, as a way to avoid the effects of sugarcane herbicide residues, is discussed at length.  The practical aspects of turning a sugarcane operation into a more diverse farming unit is also discussed. The podcast was recorded with Deon Schröder, but it followed a workshop discussion that included input from Dave Wilkinson, Shaun Carroll, Marcel Ortmann and Andrew Braithwaite.

How sugarcane burning is making people sick

How sugarcane burning is making people sick

For many of us, morning doesn’t begin until we’ve had that first cup of caffeine. But the spoonful of sugar some Americans are pouring into their coffee or tea could be making communities in Palm Beach County, Florida sick.

In a lawsuit filed in 2019, the plaintiffs claim the smoke and ash that fills the air during harvest season may be linked to several serious health problems, including respiratory issues. A group of journalists and scientists teamed up for a one-year investigation into the consequences of sugar cane burning. In this episode we hear from one of them.

    • Lulu Ramadan (@luluramadan), Investigative reporter at the Palm Beach Post (@pbpost)
    • Robert Mitchell and Christine Louis-Jeune, Palm Beach County residents

    Justice for Black Farmers

    Justice for Black Farmers

Tucked inside the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill signed by President Biden on March 11, 2021, is $5 billion worth of aid to help Black and disadvantaged farmers. The American Rescue Plan includes $4 billion to erase debt for any farmer with an outstanding loan that involves the USDA.  And an additional $1 billion dollars has been planned for training, technical assistance, and legal aid... all aimed at helping farmers of color acquire and maintain land, after decades of discrimination from the USDA.

Eddie Lewis III is a 5th generation sugarcane farmer from Youngsville, Louisiana. He and his brothers farm the land their ancestors were once sharecroppers on. The Lewis family has paid off millions of dollars in debt to the USDA, and they still have $600,000 in debt remaining. Lewis was thrilled to hear about the relief package because without help, the family is at risk of foreclosure.

Lewis joins Trymaine Lee for this episode of Into America, along with John Boyd from the National Black Farmers Association. Boyd walks us through the details of the legislation, and the history of discrimination that has made it so necessary.

Revisiting Fidel and the Cuban Revolution: Part 2 of a BNP Original Series (1898-1958)

Revisiting Fidel and the Cuban Revolution: Part 2 of a BNP Original Series (1898-1958)

What's up to all my renegade frondeurs* and owl-eyed wunderkind!

Welcome back everyone to the second installment of a BNP Original Series about the life of Fidel Castro and the macro-history of the Cuban Revolution.

Part 2 covers Cuban history from the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898 (and subsequent ceding of Cuba from Spain to the U.S.) to New Year's Eve of 1958, when U.S. puppet and brutal dictator Fulgencio Batista flees Cuba in the face of imminent defeat to Castro's guerrilla army (Batista makes sure to steal away $100 million dollars of Cuban treasure when he flies out of Havana in the middle of the night).

Three major players in the Cuban Revolution are brought into the world during this timeframe. On August 13, 1926, Lina Ruz González gives birth to one Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, and on June 3, 1931, she gives birth to Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz. On June 14, 1928, Celia de la Serna y Llosa gives birth to Che Guevara.

Revisiting Fidel and the Cuban Revolution: Part 1 of a BNP Original Minisode Series (Cuban Pre-European History to 1898)

What's up to all my Barbarous Revolutionaries and Insuperable Love Bugs!

This episode is the first installment of a BNP Original Minisode Series about the life of Fidel Castro and the history of the Cuban Revolution.

Open your mind and let go of preconceived notions as the BNP revisits Fidel Castro's singular legacy, and we take a deep dive into the makings of the remarkable island nation of Cuba.

Cuba has successfully stood up to and withstood the inexorable hostility of the world's greatest superpower just 103 miles off its shore for the past 61 years, since Fidel led the successful Cuban Revolution, overthrowing the U.S. and Mafia puppet dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

This first episode begins all the way back through the misty sands of time, and examines pre-European Cuban history with a look at the indigenous inhabitants of the island, including the Taino people. We go up to 1898, after Cuba's first two wars of independence, the first being the 10 year war of independence against Spain from 1868-1878 and the second being Jose Marti's 3 year war of independence from 1895-1898. In 1898 the U.S. defeats Spain, ending the Spanish-American war, and Spain fully cedes Cuba to the United States.

The second BNP Minisode installment of Revisiting Fidel is coming soon, and will pick up from there.
