    Episode 450: Mac McCaughan

    Episode 450: Mac McCaughan

On today's episode I talk to musician Mac McCaughan. Mac is a singer, songwriter and the co-founder of Merge Records, one of the most influential labels in indie rock. As a performer, he's the lead singer and guitarist of the genre-defining indie rock group Superchunk, who have released 11 albums since 1989, including the most recent 2018's What a Time to Be Alive. On his own, he's released numerous albums as both Portastatic and under his own name, and in addition to all of this, he also scores films.

Episode 306: Jason Narducy of Split Single

Episode 306: Jason Narducy of Split Single

On today's episode I talk to musician Jason Narducy. Jason began his rock career at the age of ten when he co-founded the band Verböten – one of the seminal acts in the Chicago punk scene. He then went on to become frontman/songwriter/guitarist for Verbow, another beloved Windy City outfit who signed a major-label deal with Epic/Sony during the ‘90s alt-rock bubble and followed that up with an ongoing, nearly decade-long run as indie-rock’s secret weapon – serving as bassist and backing vocalist for indie-underground icons like Bob Mould, Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices, Telekinesis and Superchunk. In 2011, Jason started writing his own music again as Split Single, with Spoon's Britt Daniel and Superchunk's Jon Wurster as his backing band. He's released two albums as Split Single, Fragmented World in 2014 and his latest Metal Frames, which is just lovely.

RSR078 - Steve Albini - Electrical Audio, Recording Nirvana, & Shellac

RSR078 - Steve Albini - Electrical Audio, Recording Nirvana, & Shellac

Steve Albini is often referred to as a producer, although he prefers the label of recording engineer. Steve owns and operates Electrical Audio, and has been making records for four decades recording other bands and his own band, Shellac.

Steve has recorded over 1500 records on analog tape with a full spectrum of bands, from those that you have never heard of, to some of the biggest names in rock and roll: The Pixies, Nirvana, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Pj Harvey, The Breeders, Superchunk, Helmet, The Stooges, Cheap Trick, and Veruca Salt.

I had the great pleasure to work with Steve at Electrical Audio on a couple of different records while staying at the studio in the dorms. I learned a ton from Steve about recording, running a professional studio, business, and believing in people and their music, and I’m sure you will too here on this podcast.

    Beginnings episode 65: John Darnielle

    Beginnings episode 65: John Darnielle

On today's show we talk to the primary member of the band The Mountain Goats, John Darnielle. John first started The Mountain Goats in college, originally as a lo-fi solo act, but since 2002 has recorded with a full band, which often includes Jon Wurster of Superchunk. Highly literate, emotionally intelligent and with a background in poetry, Darnielle has been referred to by New Yorker critic Sasha Frere-Jones as "America's best lyricist." A few weeks ago, I left work for a "doctor's appointment" to meet John in a studio in midtown to talk about day jobs, Marxism, acolytic thought and then we get in deep about the act of creating!

    Beginnings episode 13: Jon Wurster

    Beginnings episode 13: Jon Wurster

Episode thirteen, our almost-anniversary, features Wrestling Team favorite Jon Wurster. When he's not drumming for Superchunk or A.C. Newman or The Mountain Goats or any other number of acts, he is one-half of the comedy duo Scharpling and Wurster. Along with producer and director Tom Scharpling, host of The Best Show on WFMU, the two create partly-scripted phone calls where Wurster plays different characters, from unabashed Philly fan Philly Boy Roy to geriatric Fonzie-inspiration The Gorch and hundreds more. Grounded by Scharpling's straight-man incredulity, the two have built up a vast fictional world centering around the made-up town of Newbridge, NJ. Jon sat down with us over Skype in mid-December to talk about Chris Elliott, SCTV, world-building, coming to comedy from being a professional musician and former MTV VJ Smash.
