Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil interview Loren Adler from the USC-Brookings Schaeffer Initiative for Health Policy on his recently published paper in Health Affairs, which will appear in the February 2023 issue. He and colleagues examined pricing and billing for ground ambulance transportation with a particular focus on who owns the transportation service.

The researchers found higher prices and higher potential surprise bills for private sector emergency ground ambulance transportation than for public sector ambulances.

No Surprises Act: Known Impacts on Surprise Medical Bills & What's Next

Last week, the Biden administration issued an interim final rule to implement critical components of the No Surprises Act (NSA).

Building on the Affordable Care Act, the NSA includes new patient protections against surprise medical bills.

About one in five insured adults had an unexpected medical bill from an out-of-network provider, according to a 2020 Kaiser Family Foundation survey. A study released this week found that about one in five newborn hospitalizations or childbirth deliveries result in receiving a surprise medical bill.

These surprise medical bills can cause financial stress to patients and their families.

Listen to Health Affairs' Senior Editors Leslie Erdelack and Chris Fleming break down the interim final rule, how it will impact surprise medical bills or "balance billing," and what we can expect regarding what's next.

Why is the President messing with California's air quality rules? Also...what's behind those annoying TV ads about "surprise billing?"

Craig talks about the Trump administration's attempt to keep California for setting its own rules on air quality and auto emissions standards.   Also, the ads are everywhere, warning about insurance companies, price fixing, and hospital closures in response to a problem with so called "surprise billing."  Not surpising, there is some big money behind these ads.
