203: Thistle Farms - Becca Stevens
On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Becca Stevens, founder of Thistle Farms - a social enterprise that helps women survivors overcome and heal from systems of exploitation, prostitution, addiction, and abuse.
Thistle Farms is a social enterprise that for over 25 years - has lit a pathway of healing and hope for women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. Becca's hope for a global movement for women’s freedom began with Thistle Farms’ first residential home and now has grown and evolved into a multifaceted social enterprise that is empowering women and helping them find healing and freedom.
After experiencing the death of her father and subsequent child abuse when she was 5, Becca longed to open a sanctuary for survivors offering a loving community.
In 1997, five women who had experienced trafficking, violence, and addiction were welcomed home. Thistle Farms’ first house was just the beginning and now they do so much more - including providing housing, financial independence, and by creating meaningful employment for women survivors.
Becca is a nonprofit leader, entrepreneur, an Episcopal priest, and she has founded 13 nonprofits and justice enterprises, mentored another 60, and has raised over $75 million to support them. Becca has authored 12 books, including - Snake Oil: The Art of Healing and Truth-Telling. 183: Sass Go - Shannon Henry
Shannon Henry, sexual assault survivor and founder of SASS GO, joins The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast this week to share her inspiring story and to talk about the incredible work SASS GO is doing to empower and protect women and girls.
Shannon is a wife, a mother, and a fearless leader - who has been described as a velvet brick with a Band-Aid in one hand and sword in the other. She is a purposed leader who believes in uncovering the power, dignity and beauty of all women by meeting them exactly where they are with compassion and love. Shannon teaches SASS courses at the University of South Carolina as an adjunct professor in the College of Education and around the world.
When Shannon was 16 years old, she was sexually assaulted. Shannon didn’t tell anyone about what happened to her for years. Shannon learned the SASS curriculum and it was a life-changer for her - and at that moment, she pledged that she would devote her life to sharing the power of SASS and empower others through it. Shortly thereafter, she created SASS Defense and embarked on a journey to empower as many women and girls as possible through SASS. Under her leadership, Shannon and a team of instructors have positively impacted the lives of thousands of women and girls in universities, the military, churches, schools, community centers, and law enforcement.
Despite this incredible progress, Shannon and her team recognized a gap between ongoing global need and their reach. They understood that without resources, it would be nearly impossible to fill this gap. Thus with guidance from a mentor, her husband and thoughtful consideration and prayer, Shannon moved forward with taking the heart and soul of SASS and placing it inside the organizational framework of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to catapult the impact SASS was having on thousands into millions, regardless of ability to pay, life circumstances, or geographical location. She elected to name the propeller SASS GO as it takes the power and purpose of SASS GO to the need, which is everywhere.
SASS GO is on a mission to eradicate assault, abuse, and trafficking against women and girls globally through prevention education, self defense training, and emergent case consulting. This dedicated team believes all women deserve to learn the skills needed to save their own lives. The women and girls we serve are as diverse in age, background, and experience as the world they inhabit with nearly 60% receiving our services for a free or reduced cost.
Shannon joins The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast to share her inspiring life story and to talk about the incredible, world-changing work of SASS GO.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
-
Shannon’s inspiring life story;
-
Her survivor story and how self-defense classes and the SASS curriculum changed her life;
-
How she decided to dedicate her life to empowering other women and girls through self-defense and the SASS curriculum;
-
How SASS GO came to be and about their incredible work to save lives and empower women and girls;
-
Stories of survivors and how women and girls have been empowered through SASS GO;
-
And so much more!

Survivor | Outwit, Outplay, OutLIST | Most Memorable Voting Confessionals
Ready for a new podcast to kick off the Survivor off-season? Introducing Outwit, Outplay, OutLIST! A podcast where Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) nail down their official rankings of Survivor things. Each week, Rob and Mike will be joined by a special guest to rank different Survivor moments, objects, people, confessionals, and more. Some may call ranking arbitrary and reductive, but this is a podcast based on just that!
This week, Rob and Mike take a trip to tribal council with Mike's RHAP B&B cohost, Liana Boraas (@lianaRHAP). While Wendell Holland may urge Chris Noble to "put the mic down," these three podcasters pick the mic up to break down Survivor's most memorable voting confessionals.
Which voting confessionals stand out to you? Are there any that didn't make the cut that you hoped to see? If you played Survivor, would you opt for a nice goodbye message or a sassy remark? Confess all of your voting confessionals with us on Twitter by tagging @RobHasAPodcast and using the hashtag #RHAP!

Survivor: Islands of Ink BrantSteele with Mike Bloom and Jessica Liese
In a special offseason podcast, Rob Cesternino is joined by the co-host of the RHAP B&B, The Amazing Race recaps, and the Top Chef RHAP-up Mike Bloom, and the co-host of The Amazing Race recaps as well as the international Amazing Race podcasts Jessica Liese. As announced on the Survivor: Winners at War episode 13 feedback show, Mike Bloom challenged the listeners of Rob Has a Podcast to raise over $23,000 for the Direct Relief charity, getting personal protective equipment to the doctors and nurses on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. If this goal was met, Mike pledged to get a Survivor themed tattoo.
This goal was met and well exceeded so in true Mike Bloom fashion, the tattoo that will end up going on his body forever will have to be determined using the Survivor season simulator known as BrantSteele. Earlier this week, Rob, Mike, and Jess asked the listeners of the podcast to submit their ideas and sketches for the tattoo. Since we had well over the 20 ideas needed for the simulation, the first podcast entails the crew narrowing the field down to 20 contenders pre-approved by Mike's wife Angela Bloom for the fake season Survivor: Islands of Ink. Now, this is the simulation of this fake Survivor season where the winner will be the tattoo that will go on the body of Mike Bloom forever.
