Ok...how should I start this episode summary? Should I start with the reason it took so long to upload this episode? No I don't' have a good excuse for that and people are just going to think I'm some kind of loser. Maybe I should talk about the movie. But I hate when people go on and on in the description about what the podcasters talk about in the episode. I know! I'll make it very meta, like how the movie is meta. I'll write out what I'm thinking and it will be cleaver and people will want to listen to the episode even more. Nah! I don't think people even read the episode descriptions. Honestly they're kind of a pain to write. (Wait...did I just use the right they're/there/their? they. are. Yeah I'm good. Maybe I should say the title of the movie. No because that's what the episode title is for)

    Days of Their Lives

    Days of Their Lives

On this episode of Articulate Experience—three writers examine how they write about the world is informed by how they see it.

Marina Benjamin’s works combine deep research with deep reflection. It’s by looking outwards that the British author salves her own inner turmoil.

Scottish novelist Douglas Stuart didn’t expect his background as a fashion designer to help his writing. Now, he considers his visual skill an essential part of his secret sauce.

Best-selling author and New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean is driven by curiosity. To stop learning, she believes, is to stop living.

Articulate Experience examines stories of humanity, resilience, and wisdom through the words of some of today’s greatest writers.

Articulate Experience is a production of the Articulate Foundation.

    Episode 78 - Adaptation (2002)

    Episode 78 - Adaptation (2002)

Every rose has its thorns. Just like every night has its dawn.
Just like every orchid...has a...has a guy who's like really obsessed with orchids, apparently.
    Every rose has its thoooooorrrrrrnnnnnsssss!!!

How's it going, flower f*ckers? Oh, I'm sorry. No flower f*cking for you today? Well too darn bad! Because this is the flower f*cking episode!
That's right! Everyone's favorite boys watched themselves the 2002 Nic Cage, Meryl Streep, and Chris Cooper-led dramatic, orchid-centric masterpiece "Adaptation."
It was a doozy of a movie.

Before that, the boys wax poetic about the weekend last. They reminisce about their time spent together. They start the apology tour: for the intro song, for getting so drunk, and for the morning after. Let it be known: We are sorry.

We're almost at the end, ladies and gentlemen. Every Nic Cage film worth watching - and all the films that aren't worth watching. From Left Behind to Kick-Ass. We're really doing it.

We're going to miss you. We love you. Good luck...with your balls.

Susan Orlean: It's Okay to be Clueless

Susan Orlean: It's Okay to be Clueless

New York Times best-selling author Susan Orlean says ignorance about a subject is a powerful ignitor of curiosity. As someone who has written about bullfighters, orchid fanatics, and an African king who drives a taxi in New York City, she knows a thing or two about delving into far-flung topics. How can we learn to take in the world as an enthusiast and as a curious person? It’s especially important for writers, she says, but it’s more a state of mind than a professional tool. And in this heightened state of other, approaching people unlike ourselves with curiosity rather than judgement could serve us well in getting along and finding commonalities. Orlean joins radio host and “Daily Show with Jon Stewart” veteran Pete Dominick for a lively conversation.

TAKEOVER 6: Michele Norris Interviews Mitch Landrieu & Others

In our final podcast takeover episode, award-winning journalist Michele Norris discusses the legacy of slavery with a US mayor and the necessity of solitude with a best-selling author. In a conversation with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Norris asks about Landrieu’s recent decision to remove four Confederate statues. Separately, Norris, who leads a program on race and cultural identity at the Aspen Institute, discusses the writing process with Susan Orlean, author of The Orchid Thief and writer for The New Yorker. Both conversations are held at the Aspen Ideas Festival, where all of our guests are presenting.
