    This episode is as raw and as real as it gets on the Building Men Podcast.  Gareth Shanthikumar shares his story of his upbringing in Australia, family dynamics, his battle with depression and how one of his closest relatives decision to commit suicide shook his foundation and changed his life.

    Gareth cofounded MAN UP in 2019 on the back of his own mental health loved experience. He aims to change the phrase ‘man up’ to mean something positive; to live authentically from one’s heart, embrace vulnerability and hold one another accountable to stand up for what’s right. Gareth is also a personal trainer & founder of EmPowered - through these medians he looks to give people the tools to develop their physical & emotional well-being.

    Flow State, Focus and The Dalai Lama With Jason Henkel

    Flow State, Focus and The Dalai Lama With Jason Henkel

    This was such a cool conversation with a great man.  Jason and I talk about the 100 flip trip, overcoming challenges as a parent of a teenager, how to manage time effectively, ultradium rhythms  and how one becomes a lama.

    Jason Henkel is a personal and organizational productivity expert known for his highly practical brain-based approach to multiplying meaningful output in the same number of hours worked both in work and in personal life.  When asked what he does, his default answer is: “I deliver calm, deliberate and authentic productivity”.   He has been called by US Navy SEAL Commander Mark McGinnis ‘The Productivity Whisperer’ and personally advises that he has the answer to finally ending the reign of the email monster and the burnout culture that has scorched the earth for long enough.  Having trained executive leadership teams and organizations around the world, he’s most interested in helping people thrive in their highest priorities while finding and permanently maintaining the feeling of balance and well-being throughout the journey.

    Episode 48: Supporting Boys through Puberty

    Episode 48: Supporting Boys through Puberty

    Unlike female puberty, initial signs for male puberty are more subtle. Puberty in boys generally starts later than girls, usually between 9-14 years old. Puberty is a time of growth, change and often less than pleasant symptoms.

    The hormonal changes that occur during a boy’s puberty are completely normal. However, if your son is struggling with problems such as an insatiable appetite, skin issues, and mood swings, there are ways that you can help.

    In this podcast episode, I discuss:

    • The initial signs of puberty in boys and the most typical order of development;
    • The average age puberty starts and hormonal changes that occur as boys go through puberty;
    • How to support your child as he goes through growth spurts;
    • What's considered normal as boys go through puberty and important conversations we can have with boys as they go through this transition;
    • How to satisfy their insatiable appetite and some of the reasons behind this;

    Plus I chat about how we can support your teenage boys through:

    • Balancing macronutrient intake and ensuring they are getting adequate protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Plus the importance of quality over quantity when it comes to food choices;
    • The three essential vitamins and minerals you will want to consider supplementing to support puberty in teen boys which help to calm the nervous system, support muscles growth, balance testosterone and support a healthy mood.

    Big Kids: Maggie Dent On Growing Boys To Men

    Big Kids: Maggie Dent On Growing Boys To Men

    Beautiful little boys grow into great, big, monosyllabic, forgetful teens.

    Holly and Andrew chat to Australian author Maggie Dent about how to support our boys through what can be a very challenging time for both them and us. Why don’t they want to talk to you any more? Why do they forget absolutely everything? Will they ever be your lovely little man again? Maggie has all the no-nonsense wisdom you need.

    Plus, Andrew can’t decide if he had a nail or fail this week. Maybe you can be the judge... His daughter’s ‘in-laws’ came over for the first time and Daddo burnt dinner! Did he apologise for it? No… Did everyone gobble it up… also no. Nail or fail?

    Ask Alice: Silver Linings in the Midst of a Pandemic

    Ask Alice: Silver Linings in the Midst of a Pandemic
    In this episode of “Ask Alice,” Alice Churnock reached out to many of her friends in search of COVID-19 “silver linings.” Be encouraged by the responses she reads in this episode … and be equipped to go find some silver linings of your own. This podcast is made available to you by the Rooted Ministry for educational purposes only, not to provide specific therapeutic advice. Ask Alice: Helping Teenagers Deal With Fear in Frightening Times

    Ask Alice: Helping Teenagers Deal With Fear in Frightening Times

    War. Cancer. Kidnapping. Terrorism. Pandemic. Our world is scary and unsure at best. The ongoing list of fears can be never-ending, and with the rates of childhood anxiety increasing rapidly, its proof that our kids are not immune to fear either. In this episode, Alice hears from a parent whose child is struggling with the fear of death following Kobe Bryant’s passing. She discusses the mindset of a fearful child and their natural tendency to avoid talking about it, which unfortunately leads to additional fear and anxiety. Alice provides practical advice on approaching difficult circumstances with a child, as well as how to convey the peace and comfort that comes from the solid foundation of the Gospel.

    Questions for Youth Groups:

    1. What are the fearful events that affect you the most – globally and locally?
    2. What are ways that you respond to these potentially uncertain circumstances?
    3. If you could visibly see God in these events, would it change how you reacted? If so, how?
    4. In Philippians 4, Paul speaks of the “peace of God which surpasses all understanding” – what does that mean for how we can live our lives and help those who may be overwhelmed with fears?
