Chapter 8: How We See Ourselves

Chapter 8: How We See Ourselves

Each year, Texas public school students learn the story of their state’s origin: the battle for the Alamo. The story has become a rallying cry throughout the ages for Texans, and Americans – It’s an underdog tale of sacrifice. But, it’s also not very historically accurate. In the series finale, Grace explores the danger of teaching myths as though they’re fact.

Teaching Texas is a new audio documentary from Wonder Media Network that uncovers the surprising history behind America’s latest culture war.

“We have to forget the Alamo myths to remember the historic Alamo properly.” A Conversation with Forget the Alamo authors Bryan Burrough & Chris Tomlinson

“We have to forget the Alamo myths to remember the historic Alamo properly.” A Conversation with Forget the Alamo authors Bryan Burrough & Chris Tomlinson

The legend of the battle of the Alamo is not only an intrinsic part of Texas lore but is enshrined in the American imagination—a band of fiery rebels fighting for independence who die as martyrs in the cause of liberty. But a new book, “Forget the Alamo!” argues that the Alamo myth is just that—an allegory that tells us what we want to believe about the Alamo, but not what actually happened.

Written by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson, and Jason Stanford, “Forget the Alamo!” has not been without its critics. A recent event at the Bullock Texas State History Museum was cancelled hours beforehand by Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, who called it a “fact-free rewriting of Texas history.”

Guest host LBJ Library Director Mark Lawrence talks to two of the book’s authors—Bryan Burrough and Chris Tomlinson—about what history really says about the Battle of the Alamo and why the myth that so many want to preserve has endured so long.

Episode 12: The Crazy Fan Murder of Selena

Episode 12: The Crazy Fan Murder of Selena

Come gather around the campfire and let me tell you about the crazy fan murder of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

**This episode includes sensitive content (CW: death, murder, sexual violence, suicide). Listener discretion is advised.**

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez has gone by many titles: the Queen of Tejano music, the Queen of Latin Music, the Queen of Tex-Mex, the Mexican Madonna, the Chicana Elvis, the Hispanic Marilyn Monroe, and the Queen of Corpus Christi. But to her family, her friends, and her millions of fans, she will forever be known by just one name: Selena. She was on the path to becoming one of the most famous musical artists in history and crossing over from Spanish-language music to the English-music and bilingual market. But one of her biggest fans and most trusted confidants would be the one who would take all of that away.  Let's talk about it.

    Selena — Shea Serrano

    Selena — Shea Serrano

Selena tells the true story of the iconic Tejano singer, played by Jennifer Lopez, who broke barriers in music and fashion until her untimely death at age 23. Like Selena the person, writer Shea Serrano is also a Mexican American from Texas. When he first saw the movie in 1997, he was captivated by all the things it got right about his world — the accents, dialogue, and intimate moments. When he watches it now, he finds new lessons on parenthood in the relationship between Selena and her father, played by Edward James Olmos.

Shea Serrano — is an author, journalist, and former teacher whose work has been featured in The Ringer and Grantland. He’s the author of The Rap Year Book, Basketball (and Other Things), and Movies (and Other Things).
