Urban Planning for a Desert Dreamscape

Urban Planning for a Desert Dreamscape

Black Rock City is a temporary metropolis of  80,000 people who inhabit 1,600 theme camps and support camps. That means nine out of 10 participants' plans are coordinated by the Placement team — a handful of dedicated staff who decide which camps go where, and why. This year-round process is an art and a science that takes many factors into consideration — from city dynamics, to campers’ Radical Self-expressions.

As Burning Man Project’s Associate Director of City Planning, Bryant Tan manages the Placement team, and oversees the city’s annual planning and placement process. Naturally, questions about Burning Man lead to more questions.

    • How do we place like-minded folks together for harmony, not monotony?
    • How are resources shared between camps in this new era?
    • Can you tell me how to get to Center Camp Plaza?
    • What rules cultivate a spirit of lawlessness?
    • Is bigger actually better?

Let’s go behind the scenes, under the clipboard, and beyond the map, exploring opportunities and obligations to iterate in this experimental city. It’s a unique test case for urban planners and any humans who live in semi-civilized situations.

“We don't want this just to be an Instagrammable bucket list thing. It's an experiment in community. We want people to show up a certain way, and so I try to just have reasonable conversations with people to help them learn what Burning Man is, and learn how to distribute leadership and responsibility, how to empower people to be their most creative selves.”

    FrostBurn: Share the Warmth

    FrostBurn: Share the Warmth

It's winter where we are. What are the coldest, most teeth-chattering, brrrr-iest of all the sanctioned Burning Man events around the world?

FrostBurn is one of them, and its participants make it happen in the dead of winter on purpose, annually since 2008. Subzero temperatures, rain, sleet, snow, and sometimes sunshine. Why? Because they can.

When the costumes are nothing less than comfy snow pants, when everyone is on the buddy system to ensure they survive the weather, no energy is wasted on facades and FOMO. People collaborate on Radical Self-reliance, Communal Effort, and all those cultural practices that got us where we are today.

Bexx is an event lead at FrostBurn, plays music in the Black Rock Philharmonic Orchestra, and writes academic papers about Black Rock City. She tells tales to kbot and Stuart of a winter wonderland happily crafted by hearty Burners.

Replay: Creating Your Own Space with Temple’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness, and Performance Stephany Coakley

Replay: Creating Your Own Space with Temple’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness, and Performance Stephany Coakley

Hi friend! It’s Giselle. I’m jumping on here real quick to remind you that I’m taking a break after over three plus years of weekly episodes to rest, reset, and recalibrate. In case you need a little woman in sports career journey wisdom while I’m away, I’ve pulled this episode from the archives.

This conversation with Dr. Stephany Coakley aired in August 2022 and it is one of the most downloaded episodes of all time. So you’re going to love it. I know I did.

Dr. Coakley is still working at Temple University as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness, and Performance. Since the last time we talked she earned the designation of Fellow with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology and she was the keynote speaker for the Social Justice through Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium where she gave a talk on “Good Trouble, Necessary Trouble: How Sport and Exercise Psychology Practitioners Can Support Athlete Activism.”
    Enjoy!

    Episode 108:
On today’s episode, I’m talking to certified mental performance consultant Dr. Stephany Coakley about creating your own space.

Stephany works with student-athletes to develop mental health skills as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness and Performance at Temple University. She also works with professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, and beyond through her private practice. On the way to where she is today, Stephany developed her craft by creating her own space, like starting her private practice during grad school so she could start getting experience working with athletes. She also worked with warrior-athletes in the military to help them develop resilience. By creating her own space, she was able to gain experience, grow, and learn, and ultimately serve her higher mission to help people realize their best lives through sport.

    We talk about:
●How Stephany came to recognize the burnout she was feeling in the early part of her career and the decision to go back to school to get her PhD.
●How hard it is to break into sports and how she started her private practice to create her own space and build experience in her own way.
●Stephany’s personal mental health practices and the tools she encourages others to have at the ready in times of stress.

Ed Thompson: Marketing Consultant and Educator

Ed Thompson: Marketing Consultant and Educator

Now and Zen Japan welcomes Mr. Ed Thompson, a Marketing Consultant and the founder of Concept Design. This episode we share beers and talk about his 20+ years in Japan and professional career in marketing, branding, advertising, and academia. He has also been a lecturer at Temple University for over 15 years. Ed is a straight talker and has strong opinions when it comes to the business of marketing. We discuss his early years in Japan getting beat up with bamboo sticks everyday, working with bureaucrats, and starting his own business after only five years in Japan. Ed has a fascinating theory on why Japanese brand logos tend to be words rather than pictograms, how to find your Personal Branding "voice" from hating-on the competition, then Ed gets deep and philosophical when analyzing Wabi-Sabi and Kintsugi and how this is related to perseverance and the Japanese human spirit. Other topics we discuss:

    • An interesting way to translate the  word "marketing"
    • Studying Japanese at a martial arts university
    • Understanding self-worth and context when giving yourself an appropriate business title
    • Why his list of clients in Japan are predominantly foreign affiliated
    • How "creative" departments differ in Japan and the main role of ad agencies
    • "Making order out of chaos" . . .  the driver for Ed's passion for marketing
    • Was Omotenashi developed as a social norm or a way to make customers more receptive to your brand?
    • "People will believe what you tell them unless you give them a reason to disbelieve"
    • In Japan, "Being present is more important than being whole"
    • Why email remains the most important CRM data
    • His upcoming classes at Temple and takeaways students can expect
