In many natural disasters, we often lose electricity, occasionally for extended time. This creates a challenge in preparing food. We must have alternatives for preparing food.

In Episode #32, we explore many options for cooking without electricity, and some creative ways to bake, fry, and slow cook.

We must stress that USING A GRILL INSIDE IS DANGEROUS AND CAN KILL!

A propane cook stove inside can be safely used for short periods in well ventilated areas.

Here are some of the options we discuss for alternative cooking methods when the power is off.

Butane stove, Rocket stove, alcohol stove, backpack stoves

Grills may be used for more than grilling:
    Side burner Use
Using a crock pot insert for slow cookIng
    Baking
    Frying
    Roasting
    Smokeing

Turkey fryers are for more than frying turkeys

    Cooking On Open Fires
    Fireplace
    Camp fires
    With foil  &  Disposable pans

    Heating Water
    Turkey fryers
    Open fires
    Fireplaces

In Episode #31, we bring you more low cost, or no cost, prepping ideas.

We begin with exercise - we just need to get moving and get healthier. Here's some things to help, which don't feel so much like exercising.

Developing relationships - we as a society no longer know our neighbors, much less the people in the neighborhood. These are our first line of help in a disaster.

Collecting things we have around the house which may have usefulness in a disaster or other SHTF situation costs nothing. You'll discover things you forgot you had. Organize them so you will know where they are when you need them.

Learning skills is not enough. We have to practice our skills. Build a fire. Cook on it. Practice identifying plants.... especially the ones that will hurt you. Go hunting or fishing. Even if you aren't out for food, it's relaxing and good for the soul.

Purge stuff - is your garage, prepper closet, or shelves crowded with things you no longer need, no longer work, or are just in the way. Throw out the junk and consider selling or giving away no longer needed items.

We also run through some problems preppers in Texas experienced during the snow and power outages of Feb 2021.

    Preppers and the Pandemic

With the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, the SAPIENS podcast is going viral. In this first episode of season 3, SAPIENS hosts Chip Colwell and Jen Shannon revisit a story about preppers from our first season. Jen calls Chad Huddleston, one of the anthropologists featured on that show, to find out how he and the preppers he studies are handling the COVID-19 crisis. In closing, Chip reaches out to SAPIENS columnist and anthropologist Steve Nash to discuss panic buying, toilet paper, and more.

The Perfect Storm is Many Things

The Perfect Storm is Many Things

It's easy to think about being prepared for the big one.  But when the big one hits, it usually isn't just one big thing that causes SHTF.  It is usually a combination of things that converge to cause a perfect storm.

It’s the end of the world as we know it. How do you feel? SAPIENS co-host Jen Shannon follows the trail of some contemporary preppers with the help of anthropologist Chad Huddleston. Then she dives into history with Tim Kohler, an archaeologist and expert on Ancestral Puebloan peoples of the U.S. Southwest.

Chad Huddleston is an adjunct assistant professor of anthropology at Saint Louis University in Missouri and an instructor at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. In March, he published an article about his work with preppers at SAPIENS.org: “For Preppers, the Apocalypse Is Just Another Disaster.”

Tim Kohler is a professor of archaeology and evolutionary anthropology at Washington State University. He also serves as coordinator for the Village Ecodynamics Project, a multidisciplinary effort to study the connection between Ancestral Puebloan peoples and their environment in the U.S. Southwest.

Episode 12: Strangers won't be welcome in rural areas at bugout time
We take a look at community dynamics, and why small town people will turn their cold shoulders (and their gun barrels) towards strangers during a full-scale SHTF WROL bugout. It's not that small town folks are not nice people... it's that people take care of their own, and small town folks KNOW their own.
