Episode 115. The Animals & Them with Van Morrison

The Animals and Them stood out from the other bands of the first wave of The British Invasion. Both had a gritty, bluesy sound and both had powerful lead singers. Eric Burden and Van Morrison led their bands to commercial success and street credibility. They wore the influences from the cities they came from on their sleeves. The Animals were from Birmingham and Them from Belfast, two very tough cities. This is the sound of two hard rocking bands.

    The ABCs Of Salvation:
    A.  ADMIT THAT YOU’RE A SINNER. This is where that godly sorrow leads to genuine repentance for sinning against the righteous God and there is a change of heart, we change our mind and God changes our hearts and regenerates us from the inside out.

    B.  BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED, AND THAT GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD. Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and that God raised Jesus from the dead. This is trusting with all of your heart that Jesus Christ is who he said he was.

    C.  CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD. This is trusting with all of your heart that Jesus Christ is who he said he was. Every single person who ever lived since Adam will bend their knee and confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.

10th Class Results! Could 5 Songs Get Into the Hall of Songs?

Let's talk about a few songs from 1964 that are now part of the Hall of Songs. One is from Motown, one is from Britain, and one is a soul classic. After discussing the newest inductees, Tim and Chris converse over two more songs that they can nudge into their song hall of fame through their "golden vote." What are those songs? Are the Beatles involved? And what about Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti," which has been on the ballot since the very beginning? Listen and learn more at our website, hallofsongs.com.

Ricky Powell's access all area songs

Ricky Powell's access all area songs

Ricky Powell is a collector of stories. Whether on the street shooting the daily comings and goings of his beloved New York, or on tour with Beastie Boys and RUN DMC capturing 80’s rappers in front of the Eiffel Tower, or Andy Warhol uptown, standing side by side with Basquiat in a singular moment of modern art. See you may not know Ricky Powell’s name, but you’ve seen his pictures. As a street photographer for the past thirty years, he’s one of those people who has always been at the right place at the right time. His first photo was of geese in a children’s zoo, and since that very first click Ricky’s work has always been rooted in the environment he finds his subjects in. A new documentary on Ricky’s life, called The Individualist, was why I asked Ricky to Take 5. It gave me a peek into a life I’d never heard about before, but felt so quintessentially New York. And as we connected on Zoom, it was clear he’s a quintessential New Yorker… a “lazy hustler” who took me on a wild ride through 30 years of stories. From George Benson to RUN DMC to The Animals, this is a time capsule of a singular life.

    George Benson - Footin' It

    Run-D.M.C - Peter Piper

    Jimmy McGriff - The Bird

    Vicki Anderson - Super Good (Pts 1 & 2)

The Animals - The Story of Bo Diddley

The Animals – our brothers and sisters

The Animals – our brothers and sisters

John begins by recapping the previous weeks of The Season of Creation, and then builds on that by suggesting that"
    -          we are enmeshed and sustained by web of life – includes all animals great and small
    -          scripture invites us to see animals not as resources for our use but as our brothers and sisters
    -          God creates and gives life through all animals by their very existence
    -          they hold life in an intricate self-sustaining web
    -          we are damaging if not killing it

    John finishes by asking:
    -          in what ways does our longing for the coming of God’s justice and peace includes a world where ALL living creatures, great and small, have the resources to experience fullness of life.
    -          in what ways do we honour our brothers and sisters in our actions and attitudes?
    -          how we might live in ways that allows them to continue doing God’s work?

    “Animal Tracks” by The Animals

Wayne hosts this episode on The Animals. Formed in 1962 as an electric blues/rock band, The Animals followed a trend amongst many British Invasion groups of the day in arranging blues songs in a rock format. They would later get more psychedelic, but the album Animal Tracks is from their earlier, blues-focused era. Eric Burdon fronts the group, and The Animals would become Eric Burdon and the Animals after some of the original members left in 1966. Join us as we get out of this place and to the sixties blues of The Animals!

    Club a GoGo

This original song written by the group is named after a club in Newcastle, England. The place opened as a jazz club but went rock with acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis, Wilson Picket and Ike & Tina Turner playing there.

    Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

This song was written for the jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone in 1964. The Animals picked up the tempo in their pop single.

We Got to Get Out of This Place

Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote this song intended for The Righteous Brothers. The Animals producer snagged it, and it has become an iconic song. It was very popular with the U.S. Armed Forces GI's during the Vietnam War.

    It's My Life

This track was recorded around the same time as this album, but did not make it onto any album at the time. It would later be included on Animal Tracks as a bonus track. It was also performed during the mid 70's by Bruce Springsteen during his "Born to Run" tour.

    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:

Theme song to "I Dream of Jeannie" - Barbara Eden's claim to fame.

Theme song to "Get Smart" - Mel Brooks broke into television with this spy spoof.

    STAFF PICKS:

Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe
Brian loves this, the biggest hit of Sonny and Cher's duet run. Sonny and Cher produced this signature song one night in their basement.

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass — A Taster of Honey
Rob says, “this is just a happy song.” This instrumental was recorded by The Beatles in 1963, but Alpert's version was more popular.

    Them - Gloria
Leave it to Bruce to find a one-named artist and one-word song...The original recording from "The Angry Young Them" was written by a very young Van Morrison, who fronted this early garage band group from Belfast.

    The Castaways - Liar, Liar
Wayne brings us this one hit wonder group out of Minnesota, The Castaway's hit mourns an unfaithful girlfriend.

    LAUGH TRACK:

Alvin Cash & The Crawlers - Twine Time
This instrumental R&B tune takes us to the finish of this week's podcast.
