Close the Loop: The Babadook (2014)

Happy Halloween! It's the final episode of Screen Cares' special October series, Screen Scares. This week, we're highlighting a horror film by the incredible writer and director, Jennifer Kent.  Sarah believes Kent's film, The Babadook (2014),  shows us that we can close the loop and find resolution even when things feel dark and difficult. Jennie says that this movie is, "The Shining, but for Moms." Either way you look at it, The Babadook is a movie demands to be talked about.

Screen Shares Rating: The Babadook is a surprising Work Screen but its narrative structure opens the door for conversation about the value of being supportive, curious and empathetic to the experiences of others.

While Screen Scares Month is coming to a close, regular Screen Cares programming will be back next week with more great conversations about how you can find the meaning in the films you watch.

36 - אני יורקת על קברך | I Spit on Your Grave | לירון סיני

The Babadook (aka Boomerang Crossbow) with Emily Martin

The Babadook (aka Boomerang Crossbow) with Emily Martin

Fright Level: Terrifying (Very Scary) with overwhelming existential dread
Trigger Warnings: Violence toward animals, violence toward children, jump scares, light gore, gaslighting, insomnia, hallucinations, abusive familial relationships.

Good gracious guys, this one is a wild ride. We sat down on the day after the American presidential election to discuss the scariest and hardest to process movie we've watched so far. This one is long. Believe us, the experience was more difficult for us than it will be for you.

The Babadook is a 2014 Australian thriller by Director Jennifer Kent and is based roughly on her own short film "Monster". It's not an easy movie to watch, especially if you have kids which will become quickly evident in the first segment when we list the trigger warnings. On the plus side, there's no sexual assault in this movie, setting it apart from most of the horror movies we've discussed so far. It is genuinely affective and is a good movie, but maybe one you want to pick the right opportunity that isn't right after an already traumatic event to watch it after.

We will discuss not understanding Australia, Jeremy's certainty that when you shoot an Australian crossbow the bolt comes back to you, our shared appreciation for and dislike of Hereditary, and what a difference having a nice old lady next door can have. Get ready to meet a Chip that's not a boyfriend, but a sister. Prepare to shudder at the horror of a nine-year-old girl's birthday party. And finally, join all of us in just wanting to take a nap after we finish talking about this movie. Am I selling it? Am I selling you on listening to this podcast?

‘The Babadook’ with ‘The Craft: Legacy’ Director Zoe Lister-Jones

It’s the perfect week to call upon the collected power of a coven. This is why we are delighted to have as a guest, the director of The Craft: Legacy, Zoe Lister-Jones. She’s on the show to talk about a new classic, Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook. Zoe discusses making her first “genre” film and grounding the film in emotional truth. She even reveals that she drew inspiration for the script from being raised by her single mother and having to interact with the men that her mother brought home. Zoe also talks about her terror of “Men’s Rights Activists” and how that influenced The Craft: Legacy. She elaborates on how her experience as an actor has helped her directing career and admits that, as an actor, we “can be difficult.” Plus, Zoe hammers home the importance of earning the trust of every person working on set or else, as she states, “you’re fucked.”

For the month of October I'll be recommending movies from the Thriller and Horror genres and this week's episode is The Babadook. I'll tell you why I think you should watch it and talk about whether or not low budget horror movies are more effective. Also, is Netflix about to get less judgmental? More in movie news.

    ‘The Vanishing’ with Essie Davis

    ‘The Vanishing’ with Essie Davis

A truly monumental episode. The Essie Davis calls in all the way from Tasmania. You know her from The Babadook, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and her latest The True History of the Kelly Gang. She is a treasure, and she’s on the show today to discuss the 1988 creep fest, The Vanishing. Essie divulges her innermost beliefs on the craft of acting and being able to know the thoughts of a character. She reveals that while working on The True History of the Kelly Gang, she and her co-stars were directed to form a punk band and actually play a show (the band’s name is Fleshlight, if you were wondering). But she also talks about the importance of studying and learning how to be a better actor. This is such a phenomenal and enlightening episode.

You can watch The True History of the Kelly Gang on VOD or if you live in LA you can catch it at the Mission Tiki Drive-In.
