How God’s Word Brought Light into the Darkest Season of My Life // Lauren McAfee

“To be able to look to Scripture in the dark times, and look to Christ in those dark seasons of my life, gave me hope that brought light into the darkness and really was just a foundation for me when it felt like the earth beneath me was shaken and shattering.” — Lauren McAfee

This month’s memory verse: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105

Today’s podcast: Have you ever walked through a season of darkness and longed for light? Today’s episode is a special one as we welcome back Dwell’s very first podcast guest, Lauren McAfee. She shares about how God’s Word has brought light in seasons of significant grief. We know you’ll be encouraged as you hear her passion for knowing God through his Word, what spending time in the Bible practically looks like for her, and how to discern which path to take when there is more than one good choice. We have one prayer for you (and us) this year: that we would be people who are in God’s Word—reading it, studying it, memorizing it, applying it, and letting it shape us—because it is from God himself and is for our flourishing as we come to know and love him more.

Today's Dwell guest: Lauren McAfee is a wife and mom who works at the Hobby Lobby corporate office and is currently pursuing a PhD in ethics. She is a speaker and an author, and is passionate about knowing and loving the Bible.

Why Do I Need To Be Saved? Saved From What?

Why Do I Need To Be Saved? Saved From What?

In order to have salvation, there must be a need for it. Saved? Saved from what? Why?

Isaiah prophesied to a nation that had turned a deaf ear to the Lord. Instead of serving Him with humility and offering love to their neighbors, the nation of Judah offered meaningless sacrifices in God’s temple at Jerusalem and committed injustices throughout the nation. The people of Judah turned their backs on God and alienated themselves from Him, which created the need for Isaiah’s pronouncements of judgment—declarations made in the hope that God’s chosen people would return to Him.

There is a strong presence of judgment that runs through the first thirty-nine chapters but the overall theme is salvation. How can the two coexist? The presence of judgment indicates its necessity for salvation to occur. Today we read where Isaiah again emphasizes the bad news of the Lord’s wrath, helping us understand why the people were being condemned.

    RE-VERSED: How To Stay Strong

    RE-VERSED: How To Stay Strong

The devil cannot make you sin. But what he will do is study your game film. He knows your tendencies like the back of his hand. He knows your distinctive weaknesses. He knows how to appeal to your evil desires so that you’ll be drawn away into sin. Sin that leads to death and separation from God. When we sin, we break that fellowship with God.

Today we are reading from the book of James and answering the questions of how to remain strong when we are under trial. This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says.
