Ethan Coen returns to the directors chair with his new comedy road film Drive Away Dolls.
Sorry for the delay on this one - we went to see Poor Things and it absolutely ruled. You can blame Mark Ruffalo's silly accent for the late upload of our silly podcast.
We're back with Inside Llewyn Davis! Join us as we take a look at its perspective on making art, poverty, selling your soul, & the gremlin-ness of John Goodman.
Content warning: discussions of abortion, drug abuse, poverty & unhoused populations.

Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion.
We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History.

All this & much, much less!
Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
In our final week of Gothtober, your fiendish-yet-friendly ghouls bring you an episode all about bands playing other bands' songs! These happen to be familiar songs that you hear at every HALLOWEEN party this time of year! Most of these are in the mainstream pop world… scary!!! However, what vile and twisted interpretations can be made by our rock n’ punk n’ metal ambassadors??? Listen if you dare…
What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

The film Blood Simple (1984) was a launch pad for a lot of top Hollywood talent including Joel and Ethan Coen, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Frances McDormand. It's also a pretty solid flick. Kinda like the Evil Dead of film noir. Jason Furie and Adam Roth review and discuss this dark, gritty, and violent film featuring an excellent ensemble cast. They also try and figure out if it has anything to do with JTT or The Lion King. Maybe?

In the thirty-third episode of Season 3 (Manifest Destiny) Kyle is joined by fellow podcaster Sean Ellis (of the Ellissinema Podcast) and fellow critic Tyler Harlow (of the After the Credits blog) to discuss the Coen Brothers' pristine and quiet adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's poetically cynical neo-western rumination on the continuous spiral of American violence and the spectrum of morality needed to navigate it in No Country for Old Men.

In the sixth episode of Season 2, Noir Means Noir, Kyle is joined by actors Galen Howard and Dan Bauer to discuss the absurdist and surreal modernized parody of The Big Sleep, and all of the subtle winks and nods to the classic noir genre in Joel and Ethan Coen's The Big Lebowski.
This week we are joined by the prolific, multiple Obie Award-winning actor, Elizabeth Marvel. She’s on the show to discuss 2017’s cuckoo zombie/murderer/demon-possession film, The Wailing. Elizabeth initially talks about how this film inspired her latest role as a demon on Hulu’s Marvel show Helstrom. But she also goes on to elaborate on the details of her creative process. She discusses how she approaches acting as a “visual medium,” which is why she always speaks to the DP on set. She also talks about loving to shoot on location because she “wants chaos.” Elizabeth did so much research on The Wailing and she is such a wealth of information on the craft of acting. She has a phenomenal story about working in a cramped townhouse with Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler in The Meyerowitz Stories. And she reveals that the Coen Brothers called people she knew before working with her to make sure she wasn’t an asshole.

You can watch Helstrom on Hulu starting October 16.
