1980: The Jerk (1979) / Top Quotes from The Jerk

We were 4 years old in 1980, so when we started this show we figured that would be as far back as we'd go. But now that we're actually focusing on the year 1980, we are making an exception. And you can ALWAYS make an exception for Steve Martin. The Jerk was released in December of 1979. But it was such a great and important movie (especially for Brad) that we're including it now. It'd a great way to kickoff the new month!

We'll share our memories and break the movie down for you in all its glory. And since this is one of the most quotable movies of all-time, we finish it off by drafting our favorite quotes from the movie. It's a fun draft and a good way to keep us on track! So pop open your thermos and enjoy!

    The Jerk (1979)

This week Ryan, Dixon, and John are talking about Steve Martin's 1979 breakout hit The Jerk. Join them for their afterthoughts on how the film holds up today both comedically and culturally, as well as its influence on the comedy genre over the past four decades.

People for the People: The Jerk

People for the People: The Jerk

We're checking off a BIG ONE this week -- Steve's Martin's cinematic debut THE JERK manages to be absent of cynicism, while biting in it's commentary about wealth. Satirical and charming, and stacked with comedic talents like Bernadette Peters, Jackie Mason, M. Emmet Walsh under the direction of Carl Reiner.

    Stuntwoman Debbie Evans

    Stuntwoman Debbie Evans
Evans was born and raised in Lakewood, California and learned to ride a motorcycle at the age of six. Her father, David Evans competed in motorcycle observed trials and she grew up attending motorcycle competitions and learned her trials skills from her father. She began competing in trials and enduro events, usually as the only female in the competition. In 1978 at the age of 19, she accepted an invitation to compete in the grueling Scottish Six Days Trial, at the suggestion of Bill Emmison of UK importation firm BERM Specialties and with support from Gordon Farley Motorcycles England. Although some enthusiasts thought that the trial may be too difficult for Evans, she proved her skill by not only finishing the event, but finishing in a respectable fourth place against male competitors in the 175cc division. Evans also began performing exhibition shows, eventually displaying her riding skills in front of tens of thousands of fans at AMA Grand National Championship and AMA Supercross events. She became known for a trick in which she would balance her motorcycle with the kickstand up and perform a headstand on the seat. She appeared in the 1980 motorcycle documentary film, Take It To The Limit, performing her trademark headstand on a motorcycle. Film industry career Evans' exceptional riding ability eventually led her to work in the American film industry as a stunt rider. She became so successful as a stunt performer that it became her full-time job. Evans has appeared in over 200 movies and television shows, including motorcycle stunt work in The Matrix Reloaded as well as in The Fast and the Furious film franchise.

Jeffrey Chuck Norris and Robert Ruff are heading back in the 1970’s to discuss Steve Martin’s first cinematic starring role: The Jerk! We also spend a little time talking about upcoming films, and the Obi Wan show on Disney+. Chuck also goes on a tangent regarding Back to the Future 2. Ruff really loves this movie, and has a job to do to convince me why it is worth any rewatches.

192: "The Brother Who Came To Dinner"

Has Reginald VelJohnson ever used a computer? Which came first: this episode or Dune? And is there a clown credential program? We squeeze into a Volkswagen Beetle to find out the answers to these questions and more as we watch Season 8, Episode 23 of Family Matters.

Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.
