Episode 93 with Cesar Abreu - Artist, The Metropolitan Opera Dancer, Menudo Almuni

Episode 93 with Cesar Abreu - Artist, The Metropolitan Opera Dancer, Menudo Almuni

The effervescent and fiercely down-to-earth Puerto Rican dancer/producer, Cesar Abreu, joins us from NYC for a deep dive into his life story, from growing up in Puerto Rico to planting roots in NYC. Cesar is known for his initial fame on a Puerto Rican TV series and for being a part of the infamous group, Menudo!

He grew up in a large and expressive family that supported his journey into performing arts and ballet, with a couple hiccups that told him to move to Florida and live with his mother. He then found a permanent home in NYC and developed his tenure as a dancer with The Metropolitan Opera for the last 17 years and counting!

Cesar opens up about mental health, gender expression and sexuality through the intersection of performing arts and entertainment through all phases in his life. He explains all about his current production, Art Bath, an experiential multi disciplinary experience, showcasing all mediums of artistry with a rotational roster.

You'll also have to wait until the very end for Cesar's philosophy on life and how he continues to remain humble and gracious through the whole adventure.

Fire Shut Up In My Bones: An Operatic Milestone

Fire Shut Up In My Bones: An Operatic Milestone

    Description
The Metropolitan Opera is back after a long pandemic shutdown with a new season. It launched with Terence Blanchard’s “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” marking the first time that a Black composer and a Black librettist have found their way to the Met. This is indeed a historic moment, fueled by recent events, and yet long overdue. Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!

    Fun Fact
“If you have passion for something and you work hard and study hard and put forth the effort, the sky’s the limit. One thing I believe as an artist is when you’re honest about what you are creating, you are creating something that will touch other people who are dealing with the same issues.” — Terence Blanchard, Composer

Artists, Tax Incentives and The Met…Oh My

There are so many artists that do not realize the amazing tax incentives available to artists and business owners, but artists do not know where to look. I am going to share that information with you. I am also going to talk about the book I am reading The Other Black Girl, and The Metropolitan Opera!

Jullie Miller Torres -- "Follow Your Love" - Lawyer turned artist exhibits at The MET

Jullie Miller Torres -- "Follow Your Love" - Lawyer turned artist exhibits at The MET

Artist, Julie Miller Torres, specializes in printmaking. Trained as a lawyer, from a family of lawyers, Torres practiced law for seven years. She was good at her job and enjoyed her clients. But something was missing. At 34, she left her law career to start over in fine art at the prestigious, Savannah College of Art and Design ("SCAD"), where she earned a BFA in Printmaking. A few years out of art school, her career was beginning to get traction, when Covid hit. Undaunted, she turned to social media to promote her work. Five years after leaving art school, Torres created a series of screen prints of Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A New York collector saw one of these works on Instagram and purchased it. This collector had connections to the Metropolitan Museum of Art who then reached out to Torres and purchased another of the RBG pieces for its permanent collection. That piece, titled "Superdiva" is currently on exhibition at The Met thru next year in an exhibit called “Revolution, Resistance and Activism.”

The Met Gala and the Matrix

The Met Gala — the grand final of fashion and celebrity is back irl! As expected, the red carpet was dripping with looks, including one from New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Her sumptuous white mermaid gown slashed with the red-lettered “Tax the Rich” message on the back made a statement — but what was it?

Keanu Reeves’ Resurrections: the superstar features in two highly anticipated upcoming sequels — The Matrix 4: Resurrections and John Wick Chapter 4: Resurrection [yes, same name!]. The Matrix 4 trailer reveals some tantalising details, like a reunion between Keanu Reeves, 57 and Carrie-Anne Moss, 54.

Oh happy day! Pub Choir’s Astrid Jorgensen is our feature interview. The award-winning choir director talks about the songs on her blacklist, why group singing is good for us and her joyful, joyful love for Sister Act 2.

Ep. 23: Transition Words (feat. Torrey Peters)

Ep. 23: Transition Words (feat. Torrey Peters)
Torrey Peters is the author of Detransition, Baby, a whipsmart novel about three women – trans and cis – trying to have a baby. One of the first novels written by a transwoman published by a Big Five publisher, Detransition, Baby imparts a textured, multi-demensional, and at times incredibly funny exploration of gender, parenthood and sex. Torrey Peters has decided to answer the questions that are tied to the stigma of detransitioning, and she does with nuance, compassion, sensitivity and grace. But what does this all have to do with the cultural implications of owning a dishwasher?

McNally Jackson New York, and Paul La Rosa

McNally Jackson New York, and Paul La Rosa

New York is synonymous with the literary world. From book publishing, agents, indie bookshops, and of course, great pizza!

I hope you like this episode as much as I enjoyed interviewing my two guests; Sarah McNally, owner of McNally Jackson Books, and Paul La Rosa, author, journalist, and producer.

Sarah’s openness about being a single, working mother in the business world is honest and touching, so much so that at times her dog wants to break out and join our conversation.

Paul discusses growing up in the projects, living through the 70s in New York, being a journalist at the New York Daily News, and his work at CBS News, mostly as a producer for the newsmagazine “48 Hours.”

    Enjoy!

S11 E4 - An Evening at The Met

S11 E4 - An Evening at The Met

This week, we get all fancy and put on our trivia tuxedos, because Hallie has trivia questions that are all (loosely) related to the Metropolitan Opera in New York! We also sing some arias about romantic comedies, football, and, of course, opera!

2:58: Q1 (Movies & TV): The Metropolitan opera house was featured in the climax of what 1987 romantic comedy, which stars one of the most prolific singers, known as the “Goddess of Pop” and earned her an Oscar for Best Actress?

10:38: Q2 (Times & Places): The Metropolitan Opera house was built as the centerpiece of Lincoln Center, the site of which was chosen as part of the urban renewal and slum clearance project led by what polarizing public official who favored highways over public transit and helped create suburbs on Long Island?

19:44: Q3 (Everything Else): L’Orfeo, considered the world’s oldest surviving opera, is about the myth of Orpheus and his wife, for whom he travels to the underworld and whose name is included in the better known opera on this subject, which was first performed at the Met in 1891.  Name Orpheus’s wife.

29:01: Q4 (Sports & Games): This past April, the Met held what they called the At-Home Gala, which had many great performances, particularly Renee Fleming singing Ave Maria.  What NFL placekicker won “Most Valuable Performer”, an NFL talent show in 2018, by singing the same song?

38:26: Q5 (Music): The opera, Cavalleria rusticana, was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1891 with part of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, but it is much more commonly performed with what other opera, composed by Ruggero Leoncavallo?

47:56: Q6 (Arts & Literature): The lobby of the Metropolitan Opera house has two large murals, created for the space by what Russian-French artist most famous for his painting, I and the Village, as well as his stained glass works?

The Artistic World of the Taíno People

The Artistic World of the Taíno People

The Taino civilization was decimated by Christopher Columbus and other European explorers during first contact, but the legacy of these people, who inhabited what is today called the Caribbean, continues to this day.

In a small exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, titled Arte del mar: Artistic Exchange in the Caribbean, Assistant Curator James Doyle showcases some of the rare wooden objects, along with the intricate gold pieces, fascinating stone stools, and other objects that have survived over the centuries. He explains what makes the artistic objects of the Taíno unique, why bats and other animals are common in the imagery, and what we know about a civilization that was drastically impacted by the devastation and genocide of European colonization.

Also, some good news: the run of the exhibition has been extended until June 27, 2021.

The music for this week’s episode is “The Shady Road” by artist B. Wurtz. His debut album, Some Songs, will be released on October 16 by Hen House Studios.
