    The Metaverse, Crypto, Virtual Society

    The Metaverse, Crypto, Virtual Society

    This episode is a deep dive on all things metaverse, defining what the metaverse is, and what it isn’t; covering frequent misconceptions (and nuances) around how VR or virtual reality, videogames, and other applications relate (and don't relate) to the metaverse; and discussing how communities, fashion, sports, and more play here.

    We also go into where crypto comes in -- including discussing trends in on-chain gaming, DAOs; themes like interoperability, composability; etc.  But we also go well beyond technology -- and into science fiction, the arts, low-fidelity design, narrative, and much, much more -- in this wide-ranging, hallway-style conversation between:

    • Herman Narula, author of the new book Virtual Society: The Metaverse and the New Frontiers of Human Experience; Narula is also the CEO and co-founder of Improbable;
    • Elena Burger, deal partner on a16z crypto (where she focuses on games, NFTs, web3 media, infrastructure, and more); Berger also wrote a thoughtful review of Narula’s book;
    • ...and host Sonal Chokshi (who also shares writings on topics such as "narrative collapse" and more as well as past episodes of the a16z Podcast with Narula on distributed systems at scale, gaming, and more).

    The Metaverse | Reality vs. Virtual

    The Metaverse | Reality vs. Virtual

    Are you ready for the Metaverse? Defined as a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connections in futurism & science fiction,  it is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the internet as a single universal virtual world that is facilitated using virtual and augmented reality headsets. Basically, it’s giving “Ready Player One”....but the creators are on to so much more.

    The Metaverse for some will feel like The Matrix, a world where you can go and be whatever or whoever you want to be. If you want to travel back in time, you can do so in a flash; heading to a party or meeting, teleport in an instant. It’s currently a world where there are little to no rules; and time doesn’t exist.

    For some, they might make the most of this experience and really focus on building as many social connections outside the real world; while others might enter this realm with no set expectations and see this as an outlet to free their minds.

    Many are capitalizing in the Metaverse world through online shopping and real estate transactions, just to name a few. In this virtual world, you can use cryptocurrency to purchase goods and services, and many early adopters are investing in cryptocurrency through the Metaverse and finding ways to cash out in the real world. We will soon discover if the Metaverse is the way to go or if there is an underlying ulterior motive.

    Philip Rosedale on Second Life, Spatial Audio and the Metaverse

    Philip Rosedale on Second Life, Spatial Audio and the Metaverse

    As a child, Philip Rosedale dreamed of creating a fully-fledged virtual society and that’s exactly what he did with Second Life. Despite it being conceived many years before, Second Life was launched in 2003. Almost two decades later, and with one million active users and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of transactions, Second Life experienced a boom during the Covid-19 pandemic as the world went into lockdown and more of us spent more time online.

    In this wonderfully wide-ranging conversation, Philip opens up about his early influences, his ability to see into the future and how he executes when the tech, not always the world, is ready.

    He also tells me about his latest company – High Fidelity which specialises in spatial audio -  and where he envisions the field going, as well as the future of virtual reality, education, crypto, live music, how tech can and should be harnessed for good, and how closely he believes the link is between virtual reality and reality.

    NB At 52:13, I asked Philip, “What do you wish your legacy to be? The words which are inaudible at 52:32 are “be together” so his answer was, “It’s what I am continuing to work on. I’d like to continue to use technology to build these places which allow people to be together.”
