Robert Eggers and Jarin Blaschke - Director & Cinematographer

EPISODE 159- ROBERT EGGERS & JARIN BLASCHKE - Director & Cinematographer

Team Deakins sits down with director and cinematographer Robert Eggers and Jarin Blaschke (THE NORTHMAN, THE LIGHTHOUSE, THE WITCH). Robert and Jarin discuss their shared love of golden age fairy tale illustrations, the funny story behind the start of their collaboration, and the meticulous planning that went into making The Lighthouse. We learn how Robert transitioned from working in the art department on New York independent films to directing The Witch. Robert and Jarin talk about what it was like to work with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, how they chose aspect ratio for The Lighthouse, how shooting for historical accuracy removes choices, and how films are about editing down not about creation. A wonderful conversation with excellent filmmakers!

    HAAAAAARK!

The AHH Crew is back and this week, they're discussing Robert Eggers' 2019 Fever Dream, The Lighthouse! This film follows two 19th Century Lighthouse Keepers (Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe in career-best performances) as they slowly descend into madness.

This is a weird one, folks. Tune in wherever you get your podcasts and, remember, there is enchantment in the light.

    052 // Narana Cober 🆚 The Lighthouse // Duimpjeworstelen

This dark stormy hour, The wind, it stirs. The scorched earth cries out in vain: O war and power, You blind and blur, The torn heart cries out in pain. But music and singing Have been my refuge, And music and singing Shall be my light. A light of song Shining Strong: Alleluia! Through darkness, pain, and strife, I’ll Sing, Be, Live, See… Peace. ——Frank Ticheli 【The Lighthouse】 Let me be a light. Let me show the way. Let me be a beacon for those who’ve gone astray. Let me be a guide in the dark of night. Let me be a tower. Let me be a light. The water may be rocky, the journey may be long. The waves are rough upon a stormy sea. But I will send a signal, a message to be strong, so all the lost can look to me. Let me be a fire burning clear and bright. Let me be a beacon. Let me be a light. ——Andy Beck

    The Lighthouse (2019)

    The Lighthouse (2019)

Director Robert Eggers stormed into international acclaim with his debut film that looked at isolation, madness and paranoia. For his follow-up, The Lighthouse, Eggers swapped Colonial New England for turn-of-the-century New England, a puritan family on the brink of collapse for two Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson drinking, smoking, and antagonizing each other. Yet the film has grown a community of fans still trying to figure out the film's themes, which include mental health, Jungian archetypes, and Greek maritime mythology. But is the film truly that deep or does it fall into the cracks of pretentious art film cliche? MovieDude Eric, Chris Tondevold and special guest Jonolobster grab an oar and a bottle to find out.

318 is exceptional. Believe me. I just listened to it, and I also recorded it, so I was there to truly realize that this episode is so titties. For reals. The dudes talk movies like Uncut Gems starring the Big Ticket, Kevin Garnett. Also, The Lighthouse starring two very talented actors who were cast in the shittiest movie ever made. Likely by some film student asshole who uses words like "noir", and "color scheme". Oh yeah, this was the first "quarantined episode". Fuck Covid 69.

    The Lighthouse

    The Lighthouse

On the podcast this week, we’re trying to figure out just what the hell happened in the unique Robert Eggers film, The Lighthouse.

We wax rhapsodic about the rocky relationship between Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson’s characters. It’s clear from the first moments of the film that the acting shown on screen is of the highest quality. Seriously, they should show this film in acting classes. But then we puzzle over whether anyone actually dies in the film. Or maybe they don’t and it’s all historical allegory? And who is really worthy of the lighthouse light? WHAT DOES THIS MOVIE MEAN?

It’s clear there’s a lot going on in this wonderful movie. We’re especially taken by the Oscar-nominated cinematography and the sound design that always seems to be threatening to overtake you as you watch. The look and feel of this film is sure to take you back in cinematic time.

Also, Sean makes an astounding admission of teen vampire movie-related guilt. We end up going down a long rabbit hole about the Twilight movies and books. Don’t say we didn’t warn you here.
