    1998: There's Something About Mary / Ben Stiller Draft

    We're shutting down another year at PCY. Capping off our 2023 and our month of 1998 is the classic comedy There's Something About Mary. Directed by the Farrelly Brothers and starring Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz, Matt Damon, Chris Elliot, and more this film was a juggernaut that took the country by storm. We break down every hilarious moment for you.

    For our draft we considered Cameron Diaz, but did you know realize she basically retired from acting almost 10 years ago? We discuss that and then draft the best of Ben Stiller instead. His IMDB page is overwhelming. Listen to hear what we liked best.

    Remember There's Something About Mary?

    Remember There's Something About Mary?

    This week on the podcast, Vanessa and Jonah do a deep dive analysis of the 1998 Farrelly brothers film, "There's Something About Mary." Despite its all-star cast, there is a lot of questionable aspects of the film that are rooted in the broader context of comedy movies in the nineties. We've heard about suspending disbelief but you've got to attain anti-gravity levels of suspension to accept Matt Dillion's spy technology, the film's convoluted stalker backstory and the way that the Farrelly Brothers are able to reduce characters to mere caricatures. Despite all this, there are some genuinely funny moments in this film by Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz that embody the awkwardness of adolescence, where the film really shines. Whether you've never seen "There's Something About Mary" (which we hadn't) or it's one of your favorite films (grow up?), you'll find something to take away from our expert analysis of this comedy classic.

    Join Andrew and Brandon as they journey back to July 1998 and all the movies that released that month. After the break they tackle Tom Hanks and Saving Private Ryan before moving on to The Mask of Zorro and cancelling it. Then Brandon remembers Small Soldiers existed for a moment before moving on to the Lindsay Lohan Parent Trap movie. They move on to There’s Something About Mary and Brandon loses it over the waste of fuel in Armageddon. Finally they remember the end of Family Matters and CBS’s attempt to steal TGIF. We close with a #TeamCoco tribute to Conan O’Brien’s retirement from late night television.

    Ep023 || There's Something About Mary

    Episode Twenty-Three. In this episode, Ken introduces the 1998 Farrelly Bros classic comedy, There's Something About Mary, to Jeremy for the first time. Will Jeremy put it on the same pedestal as another Farrelly Bros classic, Dumb and Dumber?

    Ken and Jeremy debate about which of Mary's suitors did the most to win Mary's affection. They also discuss which of the guys was the creepiest in their pursuit of Mary. Then, the guys hand out their first Weekly Reel Awards of season 2 and play Guess the Rotten Tomatoes score. Will Ken expand his early 1-0 lead, or will Jeremy even up the score?

    066 - We’re spending another episode in the late 90s this week with the 1998’s tasteless yet sweet comedy, There’s Something About Mary. This movie is very much in what we would call a ‘high risk category’ with regard to how well it holds up, so it’s a juicy exploration this time around. But you know what to expect, it’s all in there - all that good stuff - so dig in!
