If y’all thought Quiet Quitting was the in thing, think again. It turns out Over Employment is the next come up and that work from home schedule just might be the cover needed to make it happen. Working 2 & 3 jobs is nothing new, but when you’re working those jobs on someone else’s clock, it’s a hard act to keep up. And maybe, just maybe….they are connected.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. Just recently a local Kansas City woman escaped what seemed to be the likes of the latest horror movie. Kidnapped, locked in a basement, and tortured for weeks on end. If you see something, say something; From the gruesome details to preventative measures, we’re diving in.

Imagine waking up, going on your morning walk, and getting shot to death by a crazed 15 year old. Not a fun vision huh? Well, it certainly wasn’t for North Carolina residence who have been traumatized by the latest Mass Shooting that took the lives of 5 and a dog by a 15 year old. We’re looking for more than thoughts and prayers; we’re looking for action and with the mid-terms coming up, it’s time to make that happen. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and the senseless killings have got to stop.

How and why do we pray?

How and why do we pray?

Anthropologists theorise that prayer coincided with the human capacity to think in the abstract. That means it's been around since the stone age — 150,000 years ago. Today the practice of prayer continues unabated for billions around the world. And one thing is for certain, prayer will be around for a lot longer than we will. On God Forbid, join James Carleton and the panel as they explore how, and why, we pray.

Welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, Bonus Episode #14! In this episode, Landon interviews Eric Egan - the vocalist for Cleveland-based alternative emo/rock band Heart Attack Man. The band made big waves with their 2019 LP Fake Blood, as well as their most recent EP Thoughtz & Prayerz, both available on Triple Crown Records. You can catch the band in September opening for alternative hip-hop artist Blackbear, alongside State Champs, Waterparks, and Mod Sun on select dates, and then again supporting Tigers Jaw alongside Glitterer in October and November. CCP14: On Gun Violence

    CCP14: On Gun Violence

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the distressing rise of gun violence in the United States. This is an issue, like so many others, that is increasingly polarizing in our culture. Regardless of where you stand on gun control, there is no doubt that gun violence is having devastating impacts on everyone. And there seems to be a radicalization of young people that is taking place through the internet and social media that is a very disturbing trend.

    Episode Links

Dr. White wrote a 2012 blog that the Church & Culture Team has (sadly) released over the years as mass shootings have happened in the U.S. It is appropriately titled “The Answer Is Evil”. Dr. White also mentioned that at Mecklenburg Community Church, our MecKidz Children's Ministry sent out resources for parents to help them talk with their children when tragic events occur:

“Talking to Kids about Mass School Shootings” from Focus on the Family

“8 Suggestions for Talking to Your Kids About Mass Shootings” from FamilyLife

“How to Help Your Kids Process Tragic News” from Focus on the Family

During their conversation, they discussed how Christians are called to have the same level of concern for the sanctity of life on the matter of gun violence and its victims as they do for abortion. For reference, it would help to listen to CCP10: On Roe v. Wade.

Often times, the Christian response to mass shootings is to say “you're in my thoughts and prayers.” Dr. White mentioned a resource that sheds light on the importance of not trivializing this phrase to a mere sound bite: Taylor S. Schumann When Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough: A Shooting Survivor's Journey into the Realities of Gun Violence, which you can find on Amazon.

For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. Prerna leads a mindfulness meditation practice to offer some peace, relaxation, and healing- something we could all benefit from in a week of so much devastating news and the unnatural urgency created by our feeds.  Give a moment back to yourself by listening; we cannot heal the world without also healing ourselves. This practice can be done seated or lying down.
