Visiting Tirana: Your Local Guide to Albania's Capital City

Visiting Tirana: Your Local Guide to Albania's Capital City

Rachel Berryman owns Tirana Yoga, one of the most successful yoga studios in Albania. But she didn’t move here to become a business owner; Rachel, who is American, first came to this former Communist country with the Peace Corps.

On this episode, Rachel and I talk about the kind of volunteer work Rachel was doing and why she fell in love with Albania and its people. We also talk about the legacy of Albania’s Communist past, and, of course, about her favorite places to eat and the experiences you must have in Tirana, Albania. Plus, you’ll learn about day trips to the best nearby beaches and more.

Roadtrip! Part 2: How to Spend a Week in Albania, from City to Seaside

Roadtrip! Part 2: How to Spend a Week in Albania, from City to Seaside

My friend Cristal and I traveled down Croatia’s coastline then made our way to Albania. While getting here wasn’t easy and involved a bus detour in Montenegro, exploring Albania is definitely worth it if you enjoy good food, cheap prices, and fewer tourists than Europe’s more popular destinations. Sounds pretty good, right?

Cristal and I visited many UNESCO sites, you know I love a good UNESCO site, and on the Postcard Academy podcast, we share what we saw in Tirana, Durres, Berat, Gjirokastra, and Sarande. You’ll hear all the highlights from the trip — and some things that we thought were overrated — and hopefully you can use this info to plan your own trip to Albania

    MN.25.03.1992. Radio Tirana Albania

    MN.25.03.1992. Radio Tirana Albania
A rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the strongest propaganda voices out of the Balkans from one of its smallest countries. Today Radio Tirana is a shadow of its former self when it was the mouthpiece of . One of the older female announcers used to fascinate me. She would sometimes sign-off with the words. And that is the end of our broadcast. "Goodbye dear Listener". Perhaps I was the only one.

Radio Tirana 1990 in Studio Quality

Radio Tirana 1990 in Studio Quality
Just before the influence of Enver Hoxha collapsed in Albania, the external service Radio Tirana was one of the largest broadcasters in Europe, with a massive megaWatt transmitter operating on 1395 kHz. My colleague, Wolf Harranth of ORF Vienna, wrote to them and managed to get hold of a studio tape of part of one of the last English broadcasts under the old guard. The Albanian English language announcers had never been abroad. They were apparently trained by an Australian Marxist, which explains their strange Australian accent. This 5 minute tape consists of the opening, a very funny Lets Learn Albanian lesson (what were they thinkiing?) and the grand sign-off. Haven't heard this for years. Anyone else remember this stuff? Makes a change from Glee.

    MN.06.09.1995. PressNow in Bosnia

    MN.06.09.1995. PressNow in Bosnia
This programme looked at the activitiee of Press Now in former Yugoslavia and its work to support independent media in Bosnia. In other news Veronica Radio says they will commence test transmissions of their new Newsradio AM station as of September 18th. Look for low power tests between 5 and 17hrs UTC consisting of news bulletins, weather and traffic reports. The Dutch Transmitting Company, NOZEMA expects the delivery of the permanent transmitter in October so that by the middle of next month the station will move to 24 hr operation. The tests on 1395 will also determine whether the expected interference problems with Radio Tirana which uses that channel in the evening are serious enough to warrant a frequency change to another part of the medium.  There have been problems in the Caribbean with very bad weather and this has affected the island of Antigua, home to the BBC’s relay station for the region. Geoff Spells is a senior engineer for the BBC’s schedule and frequency management unit and he is on the line from Bush House in London. Geoff says that for the moment, at least, BBC Antigua is silent. We also review of a new book by Nicolas Negroponte, Being Digital.
