Maia Toll, Seeker of Magic and Award-Winning Wild Wisdom Series Author

In this episode, we are enchanted to engage with Maia Toll, a seeker of magic and award-winning author of the bestselling Wild Wisdom Series which has inspired readers worldwide to explore their human nature through the magical lens of the natural world.

    • We discover a bookshelf in a willow tree
    • We enter a world where land is sentient, and the stones have stories
    • We learn that you can set magic in motion and magic... is everywhere
    • Through the Lookingglass, we see that we are in control of how we perceive our surroundings
    • Once we recognize that everything is alive, we start moving through the world differently
    • We realize…why not choose to believe in magic? It is so much more fun & interesting
    • We begin to believe that we are a thread in a much larger tapestry and ask ourselves,” what is the purpose of my thread in this weaving?”
    • We surrender into Connection and find a doorway into Communion
    • We shift the focus of knowing from our head to our heart
    • In the natural realm, we realize there's something beyond our interpretation of all these things
    • We learn that crafting a life takes a lifetime

Maia has created and conjured an award-winning collection which includes The Illustrated Herbiary, The Illustrated Bestiary, The Illustrated Crystallary, The Wild Wisdom Companion, oracle decks, puzzles and her latest endeavor, and The Night School, which explores the edges of the universe and the depths of the self, all through the lens of philosophy, divination, and astrology.

Maia is a 3-time Nautilus Award Winner.  She also owns an herb shop called Herbiary, with locations in Asheville, Philadelphia, and online. She lives in Asheville, NC with her partner and two ridiculously spoiled dogs.

    Maia's mantra is:
    "Magic is everywhere.

To see it and the effects it has on your life, change the way you perceive the world.

To harness it, change the way you interact with the energies around you.

To know it, change the way you think.

To live it, remember the lessons of the Night as you go about your day."

Building by the Numbers: How economic indicators guide road construction.

Some statistics like population growth and the price of crude oil are directly linked to transportation planning in Texas. But others—like commercial airline boardings and home sales—play a role, too. Collectively, the numbers paint a picture that informs how we fund our transportation system.

How To Stop Being Stressed Out By The News Right Now

It's hard to ignore the news, especially when so many bad things are happening across the world all at once. Between the pandemic, floods and Ukraine conflict, it's been a lot to deal with recently.

So if you want to stay informed and be able to talk about the news with your family, but also avoid feeling increasingly distressed by the headlines, what can you do to protect your mental health?

The Quicky speaks to an expert in journalism, and a specialist in psychology to find out how we and our family members can remain alert and informed, but not alarmed.

059 | Different Not Flawed ft. Christian Vinceneux

So much of how we show up in the world is influenced by how we are raised. Obviously! Many of us arrive at adulthood before we ever realize that what we view as a frustrating flaw in ourselves is really just that we are different from others in some non-mainstream way – not flawed, but perfectly different. Christian Vinceneux and I had an interesting and insightful conversation about how he supports parents and children (and creates new possibilities!) to navigate and thrive with those differences. Listen, like, and share what you think.

As a Parent coach, Christian Vinceneux helps anxious and exhausted neurodivergent families to thrive. From growing up as an anxious kid in a neurodivergent family to working as an occupational therapist for over 30 years, Christian has developed a unique approach to help parents create practical changes, for themselves and for their child.

    In this episode:

    • What’s “normal”?
    • Finding support
    • Awareness and adjustment
    • What toll is it taking?
    • Celebration

The Toll/Arc of a Scythe Trilogy by Neal Shusterman (Featuring Jeff)

The Toll/Arc of a Scythe Trilogy by Neal Shusterman (Featuring Jeff)

Welcome to Book Bites! Hosted by teen services librarian Josh Sanchez, each episode will feature a guest who will talk about one of their favorite YA or teen books. We'll make recommendations for similar books, as well as movies, music--even food. New episodes are released on the first Tuesday of every month!

We have Jeff back on the show to talk about one of Josh's favorites: The Toll/Arc of a Scythe Trilogy by Neal Shusterman. The science fiction trilogy follows protagonists Citra and Rowan as they become Scythes--people chosen to glean the population (permanently kill) to prevent overpopulation. The Toll is the series's thrilling conclusion that sees the duo team up against the corrupt Scythe Goddard. In this episode, Jeff and Josh talk about the pros and cons of living in a future utopia and the how challenging it is to wrap up stories like the Arc of a Scythe.

Steven Erikson | Author - Malazan Book of the Fallen

Steven Erikson is best known for his series, Malazan: Book of the Fallen, which introduced readers to a fantasy world unlike any other before.

While studying to become an archaeologist and anthropologist, Steven co-created the universe with Ian Cameron Esslemont, ultimately serving as lore for their tabletop RPG campaigns. This created stories and characters spanning millennia, of which both authors have continued to flesh out with new novels.

Steven is currently working on two additional trilogies, one set before and one set after the Book of the Fallen.  He has also added two science fiction novels to his repertoire since first publishing Gardens of the Moon in 1999.

I am extremely thankful for Steven and his time for this interview.  Thank you to the subreddit community for the questions you submitted and thank you to those that support the podcast!
