This movie is not a horror movie although it has horror elements in it.
It’s a drama about a family dealing with an unspeakable tragedy and a string of devastating events . In this episode I talk about just one of the horrific tragedies that occur to this family. I also mention other movies that focus on the aftermath of family grief.

Velvet Goldmine & I'm Not There

Velvet Goldmine & I'm Not There
Toss up the glitter and dust off that harmonica: that's right, we're celebrating two of Todd Haynes's most iconic films, a pair of musical dramas with Velvet Goldmine and I'm Not There. We do wade into the relatively shallow yet agreeable enough waters of the new horror flick Night Swim but primarily dedicate this episode to Haynes's explorations of fame, musicianship, fandom, the divergent yet similarly heavy legacies of glam rock and folk music, find joy in Velvet Goldmine's opaque approximation of David Bowie before puzzling over I'm Not There's narratively muddled yet aesthetically exceptional approach to adapting the Troubadour of Conscience. Come for some hot takes on the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs and predictions about the forthcoming Royal Rumble, stay for above average Bob Dylan impressions. Hereditary (2018): "Some Fuck Shit"

    Hereditary (2018): "Some Fuck Shit"

Spookies, we probably don’t need to tell you that some fuck shit goes down in Hereditary (2018). If there’s one thing most people know about this movie, it’s that — but if you don’t know, well, you might want a heads-up before you watch. On our latest episode, we're talking about the instantly iconic A24 horror, a.k.a. the project that kickstarted Ari Aster's career. With miniatures that will make your jaw drop, visuals so upsetting you won't be able to look away, and Toni Collette screaming about that face on your face, this flick has everything, and we do mean everything. It's the kind of movie that might take more than one watch to fully appreciate, but we're doing our best to cover it all on a new Spooky Tuesday.

The Wild Party with Matt Koplik – Sondheim Adjacent

It's the sweaty, sexy version of The Wild Party! Somehow there were two musicals released in the same year but John LaChiusa's version was on Broadway, starred Mandy Patinkin and Toni Collette, and featured Eartha Kitt. Matt Koplik returns to drink some bathroom gin and discuss this unhinged show.

    Episode 71 | Hereditary (2018)

🐦 Hereditary turns 5 years old! Join us, along with our Special Guest (and Official The Cherry Picker Editor) Andre Felix, as we talk about one of his favorite horror movies ever. In this episode we'll discuss everything from Toni Collette's legendary performance and tragic Oscar snub, to the hidden Easter eggs you might have missed, director Ari Aster's arthouse reimagining of the Paranormal Activity story, as well as all the unintentional comedy of an otherwise dark horror movie about grief. We'll also choose which character we think was most deserving to die, so stick around until the end.

Catherine Hardwicke on 'Tank Girl,' Self-Expression, and Friendship

Catherine Hardwicke on 'Tank Girl,' Self-Expression, and Friendship

Director Catherine Hardwicke's latest film is MAFIA MAMMA, and you probably know her as the director of TWILIGHT, LORDS OF DOGTOWN, or THIRTEEN. But did you know that she got her start as a production designer, and that she production designed TANK GIRL? Well, this was after she got her degree in architecture. All this, plus dressing like a building, dealing with on-set toxic events, directing Monica Bellucci, and the kinds of characters she'd like to see on screen, come up in this sprawling conversation that reveals an artist as fun, badass, and idiosyncratic as the titular TANK GIRL.

Classic Comedy Chronicles & Portraying America's Dads featuring Paul Dooley

Iconic comedic character actor Paul Dooley carved out a role as Hollywood’s go-to movie Dad while his own children were missing. Paul played dad to Julia Roberts, Mia Farrow, Toni Collette, Dennis Christopher in Breaking Away and Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles, all as his ex-wife was on the run with his kids.

The pandemic pause compelled Paul to chronicle his story in the new book, Movie Dad: Finding Myself and My Family, On Screen and Off. Paul joins us to share his casting secrets, his encyclopedic joke memory, his improv inspirations, his clowning history and his journey from small town West Virginia, to Greenwich Village to Broadway, to Hollywood and a proud place in movie dad history.

Paul has stories about Mike Nichols, Neil Simon, Carol Burnett, Don Knotts, Alan Alda, Lin Manuel Miranda and so many more. Was Walter Matthau a scene hog? Turns out, yes!

Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Poker Face on Peacock and The Bear on Hulu.

    Roxanne Benjamin on 'Daria'

Before writer, producer, and director Roxanne Benjamin was making V/H/S shorts or directing shows like Nancy Drew  and The New Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, she was a disaffected youth who was so recognizable as a Daria that classmates called her by the famous MTV character's name. Now, she joins us  fresh off the streaming release of her new movie, There's Something Wrong With the Children, to talk about relating to Daria, finding a place in the world of horror and filmmaking in general, and some other stuff '80s/'90s kids love.

Episode 406: "Knives Out" of This World

Episode 406: "Knives Out" of This World

This episode is all about "Knives Out," the 2019 murder-mystery that kinda took the world by storm. It has a great cast, clearly a decent budget, awesome filming location, and great writing. There's plenty of humor peppered throughout as well. It's very Agatha Christie for the modern age which, as Christie fans, speaks to us. We pair it with Niepoort Douro Twisted Tinto 2020. It's a mineraly and dark fruity wine that we really enjoyed.

    Metacritic Score: 82/100

Movie Sync Notes: We rented "Knives Out" on Amazon Prime Video. We start "Knives Out" 12:54 into the pod, and push play on part two 1:23:59 into the pod.
