Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 5

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 5

We almost can’t believe this day has finally arrived, but it’s here. Let’s pop some bubbly 🥂 and start tooting those party horns 🎉 because today is the day that we tie a bow on this mini-series all about our current top five favorite films!

This one has been a long time coming. While it’s only been a month and change since the first episode showed up in your podcast player, we actually started recording this series all the way back in January 2020. Now it’s August 2020. August! We’ve loved every moment of sharing these amazing films with you and are looking forward to closing things out with our final two.

To start things off in this wrap-up episode, we’ve got the tense, gritty, expansive 2007 thriller from the amazing David Fincher, Zodiac. This film was based on the very real and tragic serial killings that took place during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. These killings that took place primarily up in the Bay Area of California gripped the nation and the film that was made about them kept us completely rapt. This one was one of Sean’s suggestions and he’s thrilled to share it with everyone. The cast is amazing, the sound work is top-notch, and the cinematography will astound you.

To wrap up this wrap-up episode, we’ve got Steven coming in hot with one of his choices: the affecting and lovely rom-com, travel, family, drama (all the adjectives!) from 2005, Elizabethtown, directed by Cameron Crowe. Orlando Bloom starred in this one when he was hot off his turns in the one-two knockout pairing of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the first Pirates of the Caribbean. He’s joined by the always lovely Kirsten Dunst as the woman who gives him a good shaking back into reality. Like all Cameron Crowe movies, you can expect this one to make you feel some intense feelings. Get the tissues ready!

While Zodiac and Elizabethtown are about as far apart thematically as two films can get, they’re both strong examples of filmmakers at the top of their respective games. They knock it out of the park with these ones. Give ‘em a watch. You won’t be disappointed. We can just about guarantee that.

Thank you again. We had a great time sharing these ten exceptional films. Stay tuned for more goodness!

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 4

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 4

It’s time for the amazing and fabulous fourth part of our top five favorite movies mini-series! It’s the penultimate part, which is one of the very best parts of anything. There’s the feeling of accomplishment you get from making it this far and none of the sadness from knowing that you’re listening to the end of the series. It’s all just good times!

First up, we’ve got a thrilling movie with an incredible soundtrack for one of Sean’s favorites. This one is the 2011 crime drama thriller romance film (oh yes, it covers all those bases and then some) by one of the all-time great Danes, Nicolas Winding Refn. It’s called Drive and it’s a knock-you-out-of-your-socks sort of a film. It left us breathless by the end of it and wondering what it has against redheads. Seriously, that poor Christina Hendricks character… Regardless, it looks stunning and has an energy that sucks you in from moment one.

Immediately following Sean’s pick is another one of Steven’s. This time he’s bringing us the wonderfully touching film, About Time, made in 2013 and directed by the always amazing Richard Curtis. This one sneaks up on you with its clever writing, adorable relationships, and tender family moments. Come for the concept and stay for the emotional resonance. Thankfully, the redheads in this one make it out better than they did in Drive. I mean, waaay better. This film feels completely real, even despite its fantastical premise, and by the end of it, makes you wish you could watch it again right away.

These two are fun and a thrill to watch. Drive and About Time are some of our favorite movies for a clear reason. We feel positive that you’ll fall in love with them, too.

Get into it and tune in again for part 5!

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 3

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 3

We’ve got one question for you… Are you ready for part three, a.k.a. “the middle part,” of the mini-series where we share and discuss our current top five favorite movies with you and each other? We hope you’re ready for it, because it’s here and we’re doing it! This time we’re diving headfirst into, you guessed it, another pair of our favorite movies.

Coming up first is another one of Sean’s favorites, 2013’s Her, directed by the always brilliant Spike Jonze. If you’ve been looking for a gorgeous, unique, and heartfelt film about a man falling in love with an operating system, then this one is for you! Okay, we get it, that sounds like a strange sort of movie. The thing is, it is a little weird, but the incredible quality about Her is the way it makes the idea of a man falling in love with a computer seem totally normal. This is a gorgeous looking film, too. No wonder that it was shot by one of Sean’s favorite cinematographers, Hoyte van Hoytema.

We follow up Her with one of Steven’s (and coincidentally, Sean’s) absolute favorites, Garden State. This one was made in 2004 and was written, directed, and stars Zach Braff, as well as starring Natalie Portman. We’ve found that it still holds up very well and makes us feel all the feels. Really, all of those feels! Coming just out of high school, this one was a very formative film for us, both as people and as film lovers. The film also centers around a budding relationship, this time between two real people. They’ve got baggage, they go on adventures, and they scream from construction equipment next to a tugboat at the top of a quarry in the rain. It’s got everything!

We love both of these films and are thrilled to share this watching experience with you. Both Her and Garden State hold a special place in both of our histories and hearts. We can’t wait to hear from you what you think of these films, too.

Get into it and tune in again for part 4!

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 2

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 2

Get your ears ready for some goodness because we’ve got part two of Our Top 5 Favorite Movies mini-series zooming its way to you right now! You felt with us through Seven Pounds, you laughed with us through The Grand Budapest Hotel, and now it’s time to feel some feelings as we launch into another pair of amazing films.

This time we’re talking about some especially meaningful and important films in our lives. If part one of this series was the appetizer, then now we’re starting to get into the main course.

First up, we’ve got the second of Steven’s picks: Bella. This is a criminally under-watched film, which is frustrating since it’s been out since 2008 and is super great. That’s so many years and still, there are loads of people who haven’t seen it. Sean’s extra glad that Steven had him watch it as one of his top picks. Now they can both spread the word about this unique, heartwarming, and deep film about family and redemption.

Following Bella is the 2010 movie, Beginners. Gosh, what a touching and heartfelt film this one is. Not only is it one of Sean’s most treasured films of all time, it’s now the same for Steven. From its rollercoaster story of love between two people to its ridiculously charming dog and all the way to its bittersweet, beautiful father-son relationship, this film is absolutely worth a watch.

This is another episode of a series that we’ve been beyond thrilled to get out into the world. We believe more people need to see the films we’re talking about, so consider this episode our very strong recommendation for these films.

Get into it and tune in again for part 3!

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 1

Our Top 5 Favorite Movies, Part 1

We’re kicking off a brand new mini-series on the podcast this week: an extensive and appreciative talk about our current most favorite movies ever. Somebody cue the celebration horns!

    🎉 🎉 🎉

Over these five episodes, Steven and Sean are going to be sharing their favorite movies with each other and then they’re going to gush about those stupendous films. What better place to celebrate our love for these movies than a podcast that celebrates loving movies?

Funny how life works out like that.

In-store for you, this week is one of Steven’s favorite films. Coming out in 2008, the somber, yet life-affirming, Seven Pounds kicks things off. Honestly, is there anything Will Smith can’t turn into a moving, enjoyable watching experience? This man has always had major talent and he shows it off like crazy here. Get the tissue box ready for this one because you’re going to need it.

Up next is one of Sean’s favorite movies, The Grand Budapest Hotel. If you’re any sort of a Wes Anderson fan, then you likely already know this one. It’s an energetic, glorious romp across a fictional Europe, with the main centerpiece of the fabulous, titular hotel. It came out in 2014 and has been delighting us ever since.

Both of these films have always meant a lot to us and we’re thrilled to share them with you today. This is a series we’ve been talking about doing for a while. It’s been long in the making, but it’s here for you now.

So get into it and tune in again for part 2!
