    Episode 33: PIVOT: The Priorities, Practices, and Powers That Can Transform Your Church Culture (Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer)

    Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer, authors of the popular 2020 book, 'A Church Called Tov,' talk to us about their follow up book, 'PIVOT'. Laura Barringer and Scot McKnight on forming a goodness culture in A Church Called Tov

    New Testament scholar Scot McKnight and his daughter Laura Barringer join the Tent to discuss their book A Church Called Tov. Though it initially focuses on toxic church environments, abusive church leaders, and the people who enable them, the book is primarily a call for our communities to be transformed into families devoted to goodness as we seek—to use McKnight's word—Christoformity together. There is no quick fix to developing a "goodness culture" as Barringer and McKnight recommend. Instead, they offer an invitation to a conversation—many conversations—between church leaders and every Christ follower about how we can begin to make those "one inch a week" changes to our personal relationships and overall leadership cultures.

    This week we delved into the Fall in Genesis 3, where we see the tov (good) and shalom (peace) God created disrupted by sin. It is a tragic contrast to the paradise described in the first couple chapters of Genesis, with the consequences still seen today. As bleak as sin and death are, we can know that God’s work entails restoration, renewal, and reconciliation through Jesus, and that is the hope of the Gospel.
    “The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Himself has come into the brokenness humanity created, He died for what separated us from God, others, and life;
    He has promised to renew all things, including us.”
