The shoes made of Wyoming Outlaw Big Nose George's Skin

The shoes made of Wyoming Outlaw Big Nose George's Skin

In 1881, confessed murderer George "Big Nose" Parrott was hanged by vigilantes after he tried to escape from jail in Rawlins, Wyoming. While that was the end of George, it wasn't the end of his remains. Some of them were given to a teenaged girl, some were hidden in a barrel to be discovered in 1950 when a store was being built in Rawlins, and some of them were used to make shoes believed to have been worn by Wyoming's third governor at his inauguration in 1893.

To find out more listen to this show and buy Dr. Mark E Miller's book Big Nose George His Troublesome Trail.

    King Tut of the Tumbleweeds

    King Tut of the Tumbleweeds

We had so many possible titles for this episode:  "The Great Spitoon Robbery", "MANnequin" and last but not least "It's Never a Mannequin", but there was a clear winner.  In this episode we present the King Tut of the Tumbleweeds!  This is a bonkers story about a normal guy, Elmer McCurdy, and his evil plan to pull off one of the biggest train robberies in history.  Alas, it was not meant to be $46 in cash and some bobbles were not exactly what Elmer and his crew had in mind.  However, Elmer was about to gain notoriety for an entirely different reason and this train robbery was indeed remembered as...well not the GREATEST train robbery of all time, but certainly one of the most interesting.  This episode has it all true crime, history, death, carnivals, and some serious misdeeds.

Council Bluffs and its Train Robbers

Council Bluffs and its Train Robbers

As one of the earliest and largest railroad centers of the Midwest, it’s not surprising Council Bluffs would right at at the forefront of train robberies as well. The first moving train to ever be robbed West of the Mississippi left from Council Bluffs. Another train robbery in a Bluffs rail yard netted over $3,500,000; a tidy sum in 1920, and triggered copycat deeds all across the country. Not all local robbers fared well; another’s bullet-ridden body was put on display, becoming quite a popular public curiosity. This episode, written by historian Ryan Roenfeld, tells the tales of these three robberies that had ties to Council Bluffs.

154 - The Outlaw Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang

154 - The Outlaw Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang

Jesse James! Perhaps the most notorious outlaw in wild west history. Yip, yip, yaw! But do you know why he was so infamous? Do you understand the social climate that helped create him? Do you know what dirty deeds he committed to become so infamous? Today, we learn a lot about how the chaos of the Civil War created a lot of outlaws, and a number of the most ruthless of these men ended up in the James-Younger gang - easily the most "successful" wild west gang there was, if you count robbing one train, stagecoach, and bank right after another - for over a decade - as being "successful." We go full bandit on another wild west, guns blazin' edition of Timesuck!

    Jesse James (part 1)

Part one of a several part episode arc on none 0other than Jesse James.
    Jesse James

Jesse Woodson James (September 5, 1847 – April 3, 1882) was an American outlaw, bank and train robber, guerrilla, and leader of the James–Younger Gang. Raised in the "Little Dixie" area of western Missouri, James and his family maintained strong Southern sympathies. He and his brother Frank James joined pro-Confederate guerrillas known as "bushwhackers" operating in Missouri and Kansas during the American Civil War. As followers of William Quantrill and "Bloody Bill" Anderson, they were accused of participating in atrocities against Union soldiers and civilian abolitionists, including the Centralia Massacre in 1864.
