Ep 77 Bryan Sisk | Charting The Course of Resilient Leadership

Join the conversation as Bryan Sisk, a seasoned US Army veteran, unveils the tapestry of leadership that's been woven through his 20 years of military service and beyond. He shares his own story and casts a light on the qualities that make for steadfast leaders in any field. Currently, Bryan is the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive at Memorial Hermann Health System, one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery systems in Southeast Texas, 32,000 employees, including 12,000 nurses.

This episode takes you behind the scenes of resilience and dedication, where Bryan's narrative intersects with the relentless spirit of nurses during the pandemic and the innovation that has since reshaped healthcare. We celebrate the unsung heroes on the front lines and the sparks of change they've ignited, leading to new practices prioritizing well-being and patient care. It's a heartening reminder of the need for cultures that champion innovation and the significance of empowering those dealing directly with life's most critical moments.

    Ep 75 Mike Kaeding

    Ep 75 Mike Kaeding

Mike Kaeding is the CEO of Norhart. Norhart designs, builds, and rents apartments. They are transforming the way apartments are built and managed by incorporating technologies and efficiencies that have revolutionized other industries and led to high-quality, cost-effective projects. Mike’s parents started their family business. But just a few years after joining the business, Mike’s father unexpectedly passed away. Suddenly, Mike had what felt like the weight of the world on his shoulders. He had to lead this business with no preconceived notion of "the way things are done" in this industry. He was struggling to the point where the city briefly shut him down. This shattered his world. Norhart just naively started to solve problems after that incident. And that led to magic.

Norhart began changing the way construction is done. Starting with an attractive culture unique to the construction industry, they hired the best talent. Together Norhart solved chronic construction inefficiencies, applied techniques from manufacturing, and integrated traditionally unaffiliated trades. This resulted in higher quality and lower cost projects. Norhart’s mission is to solve America’s housing shortage by transforming the way apartments are built and managed. And in doing so we will improve the way we all live.

E242: Walt Morgan -Life is better when YOU are better

E242: Walt Morgan -Life is better when YOU are better

    In Walt's own words:

Since I was five, I wanted to fly helicopters. So I did. I was in the U.S. Navy for 23 years as a designated helicopter pilot. Before I retired from the Navy, I had assumed that I would fly for the rest of my life (helicopters or other) - it was my passion and it was what I was trained to do. But I felt a nudge from the universe; a new calling. It happens that in my last four years in the Navy, I was assigned as a professor teaching leadership at the University of Colorado. I became fascinated with leadership and learned how much I had to learn. Through that work, I realized that I felt called to serve others in their personal leadership journeys. So when I retired, I decided to leave aviation in my past, and work in leadership development. First, in the corporate setting as an in-house facilitator, and then as an independent coach. For me, the journey since retirement has been characterized by powerful emotional, spiritual, somatic and cognitive growth. I feel so fortunate to be able to serve others in their personal leadership journeys!

E66 Defining Meekness with Joshua K. McMillion

E66 Defining Meekness with Joshua K. McMillion

So what is meekness anyway? Webster's dictionary defines meekness as "the quality or state of being meek: a mild, moderate, humble, or submissive quality." My definition of meekness is slightly different. You, the leader, command your organization with humility, understanding, and gratitude (HUG). To achieve this, leaders must actively listen and create a shield wall to protect their team from the dangers of the outside environment.

Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come, and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash. - Matthew 7:24-27

E62 Building Your House of Leadership

Every leader has a leadership philosophy, but not every leader can clearly communicate it. To be a Purposeful Accountable Leader (PAL), you must consider your leadership philosophy. A way to achieve this is by creating a symbolic house encompassing your leadership style. The HOL was developed by Dr. J.R Flatter and removes the typical leadership philosophy with a visual aid in four steps. First, a leader must determine what their leadership foundation will be. Second, leaders create the four walls using characteristics and values. Third, leaders choose the components of their home consisting of the principles and beliefs. Finally, each house must have a roof, which should take them somewhere. You are leading in the dark unless you give intentional time to think about the leader you choose to be. Below are the seven steps I have developed using the acronym INSPIRE to help you craft your HOL:

“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.”
    – Ralph Waldo Emerson
