The Art of Overcoming Self-Made Boundaries for Success

What are the secrets to transcending the self-imposed barriers?

On the previous episode featuring Nicoa Cornelius, we talked about the mindset and limitation that even top executives can't seem to shake off. In this Thursday Thread episode, I delve into the psychology behind our tendency to cling to limitations, and how a simple shift in focus can lead us from feeling stuck to unleashing our full potential.

This conversation isn't just about identifying the chains we place on ourselves; it's a hands-on guide to turning your gaze from the hurdles to the finish line, finding joy in the now, and using a shift in your own perspective as a powerful lever for transformation.

I'll also share the telltale signs that you might be creating your own biggest roadblocks, and active ways to shift your own perspective so you can see new possibilities instead. I share a compelling exercise that will challenge you to switch up the way your brain is seeing the world so you can actively view it through a vibrant, new lens.

By becoming the artist of your existence, you'll see how minor tweaks in your daily flow can open doors to your most joyful and exciting opportunities. Dreaming big and celebrating personal growth go hand in hand, and in this episode, I'll show you why they're crucial in chipping away at the walls of your comfort zone.

I hope you enjoy the two somatic, mindfulness, and creativity exercises offered in this episode to support you in shifting your perspective.

#88 Mental Health Today with Sharon Rolph -"Finding Purpose in the Golden Years: Sharon Rolph on Transforming Retirement Mental Health"

#88 Mental Health Today with Sharon Rolph -"Finding Purpose in the Golden Years: Sharon Rolph on Transforming Retirement Mental Health"

In the captivating episode #88 of "Mental Health Today," Ken Stearns engages in a profound conversation with Sharon Rolph, a renowned retirement coach who brings a fresh and much-needed perspective to the mental health concerns of the aging population. Sharon, with her rich background and empathetic approach, emerges as a beacon of hope and guidance for those navigating the often-overlooked mental health challenges of retirement and aging.

Ken begins the episode by sharing his own enlightening experiences from traveling across the United States for his other podcast, The Jar. He reflects on the diverse mental health struggles and triumphs he's witnessed, setting the stage for a deep dive into the mental health landscape of maturing communities.

Sharon Rolph, with her vibrant energy and insightful wisdom, takes center stage as she eloquently unfolds the complexities faced by seniors in today's society. She brings to light the critical issue of mental health in the aging population, a topic often overshadowed in mainstream discussions. Sharon's expertise shines as she articulates the nuances of retirement - a phase that, while often idealized, can lead to feelings of isolation, boredom, and a loss of purpose.

Drawing on her diverse experiences, including a significant tenure at Boeing and her time as a Lyft driver, Sharon offers a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the psychological impact of retirement. She talks about the startling myth she encountered at Boeing, where it was believed that employees often die within three years of retiring. This myth, rooted in the loss of identity and purpose post-retirement, spurred Sharon to delve deeper into the psychology of retired life.

Throughout the conversation, Sharon emphasizes the importance of staying mentally and socially active. She discusses how retirees often struggle with the sudden lack of structure and purpose after leaving their careers. The conversation takes an interesting turn as Sharon delves into her personal journey, revealing how she broke away from a vow of invisibility made in her youth to become a visible, impactful coach helping others find their essence and purpose.

Sharon's approach to retirement coaching is holistic and empowering. She doesn't just focus on the financial aspects of retirement but delves into the emotional and psychological preparation needed for this significant life transition. Her methodology is about discovering and nurturing a new sense of purpose, building community, and fostering mental strength.

One of the most compelling parts of the episode is when Sharon discusses the concept of controlling one's thoughts to control one's life. She shares powerful personal anecdotes and strategies, such as recalling warm memories before challenging situations to improve mental strength and outlook.

Ken and Sharon also explore the resources available for retirees, discussing initiatives like AARP's Purpose Prize and the importance of community involvement and charity work in finding fulfillment. Sharon's passion and dedication to empowering retirees shine through as she talks about her book, "Fresh Courage in Retirement," and her mission to help people find joy, purpose, and vitality in their later years.

The episode concludes with a powerful message about the importance of aligning one's values with actions, especially in retirement. Sharon's transformative journey from feeling invisible to becoming a guiding light for many is not just inspiring but a testament to the power of resilience and purpose at any age. Her star quality as a coach and speaker is undeniable, leaving listeners with a renewed perspective on aging and mental health.

    A Note From Seibo Shen:

Hi, I'm Seibo Shen, I'm an entrepreneur, mindset and business coach and I have been part of six successful exits. While I have spoken at SXSW, ArcView, New West Summit, and been interviewed by publications such as Business Insider and Forbes, I still did not feel content with my accomplishments.

I found out that if you live by society’s standards, you will never feel fulfilled because those weren’t your dreams to begin with. I felt betrayed by society, I did everything I was supposed to do to be happy. I sacrificed my time, my health, and my relationships.

I decided to do a 180 and became ULTRA SPIRITUAL. This provided me with a lot of relief from the mental suffering and pressure that I felt as an entrepreneur but I could also see downsides to always living in the moment and trusting that the universe will take care of you.

This led me to create a framework that would take the best from both worlds. I wanted to combine practical, utilitarian skills with a metaphysical ideology so that you can lead a life of passion and purpose without sacrificing abundance. Now, I want to share this framework with as many people who want to begin prioritizing fulfillment and have self-mastery over their own lives.
