    Rescuing the Rescuers

    Rescuing the Rescuers
This podcast is for everyone who has a passion for animal welfare. If you're a cat foster, trapper, shelter volunteer or worker, cat rescue volunteer, or in the non-profit community, you've undoubtedly found yourself out of energy at one time or another. It's common for all of us to get discouraged and question our effectiveness. Burnout, compassion fatigue, exhaustion and depression are real problems and very common when working/volunteering in those areas. There is a place where you can come and share your challenges, heartbreaks, the good days and the bad ones with others in the community who understand. The Rescuing The Rescuers Facebook team is made up of people from the cat community. We have counselors, coaches and those with shared experiences ready to help. We recognize the need for a group like this is long overdue.

#023 – “A Yukon Game Warden’s Stories” by George Balmer

Retired Yukon Game Warden, George Balmer, humorously recounts more than 40 years of incredible outdoor adventures during his patrols to some of the territories most stunningly beautiful places. Reflecting upon his chance meetings with wonderfully unique people along the way and the occasional “day gone sideways” mishap, George’s newly published book,          A Yukon Game Warden’s Stories, is soon to be a Yukon “must read classic”.

As a consummate “bushman”, George has flown, skied, snowshoed, hiked, boated, cycled, quadded, and literally crawled his way through some of the most remote parts of the Yukon Territory while patrolling thousands of kilometers of land as a Yukon Game Warden. Realizing very early in his career that the stories being shared with him from the incredible Yukon people he met day to day were so unique, that George began taking pictures of both the people, and the places he was visiting.

It was during the COVID 19 pandemic that George began chronicling his memoirs based on the slides and notes he had taken over his career.  Born of a world wide pandemic outbreak, "A Yukon Game Warden’s Stories" provides readers with a historical, humorous, and wonderfully reflective 228 page journey through the 1970’s  & 80’s halcyon days of the Faro, Ross River, Haines Junction, Dawson City, Teslin and Whitehorse area. The overwhelming theme of the book pays tribute to the people living traditional and non-traditional lives amongst the hustle and bustle of the Yukon’s second mining boom.

The Pyhton Cowboy is accustomed to wading into the blackness of the Everglades at night searching for invasive Burmese pythons as a paid bounty hunter for the South Florida Water Management District.

Owner/Operator of Martin County Trapping & Wildlife Rescue in swampy South Florida, SFWMD Invasive Species Contractor, FWC Alligator and Nuisance Animal Trapper; also 1 of 25 state contracted Python Hunters in the Florida Everglades and surrounding areas.

Python Cowboy specializes in large/dangerous nuisance animal removal and wildlife rescue. State contracted invasive wildlife agent. He takes pride in his work and his name.

The 2020 Python Bowl ended recently with 80 invasive Burmese pythons caught.

Taking the grand prize for most pythons captured from a professional was Mike Kimmel, a trapper with Martin County Trapping, Removals and Wildlife Rescue. He is well known as @pythoncowboy on Instagram and YouTube.
Kimmel caught eight pythons making up 10% of the total number of pythons caught during the bowl, it was his first Python Bowl. The longest and heaviest of these slithering beasts was 12 feet, 7 inches and 63 pounds. With more than 750 registered competitors from 20 states, Florida Python Challenge's 2020 Python Bowl came to a close during a ceremony Saturday at Bayfront Park in Miami, about a week after the hunting stopped on Jan. 19.

Burmese pythons are taking over the historic Everglades. Hunts are held regularly, but the number of snakes removed is not on pace with the rate at which the snakes are spreading. They compete with and prey on native species.

    Episode 006: Buckskin Tanning

    Episode 006: Buckskin Tanning

Learn to "tan" deer hides and other animal hides the traditional way- no synthetic or hazardous chemicals.  Sometimes called "brain tanning," the process of making traditional buckskin only requires a few easily obtainable items and a little bit of sweat.  In the end, you'll have one of the highest quality garment-making materials known to man.  If you're a hunter, and you hate seeing all of your deer hides go to waste, this is the answer.
