“Boarding School is Developmentally Damaging” Leading Clinical Psychologist: AEM #79 Dr Naomi Fisher – Trauma | Child Development | Self-Directed Learning

She also talk about the modern education system. What is it like? What needs to change?

We also delve into boarding schools. What is the opinion of clinical psychologist, who specialises in education about boarding schools? Dr Fisher also attended boarding school in her sixth form. What was her experience like?

Are boarding schools developmentally damaging for children?

    ---

Dr Naomi Fisher is an independent clinical psychologist and EMDR-Europe trainer. She specialises in trauma, autism and alternative approaches to education. She works with children, adolescents and adults.

She is the author of Changing our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of their Own Learning (Robinson, 2021) and A Different Way to Learn: Neurodiversity and Self-Directed Education (JKP, 2023).

    Questions for Naomi:

    1. I would love for you to share some of your journey. How did you get into the work you now do?
    2. Could you please talk about trauma and child development? How does trauma impact a child?
    3. How might these trauma symptoms show up as an adult?
    4. In one interview you mentioned “School is restricting children from a natural developmental process.” Could you please explain and expand? Is school the best way to educate your child?
    5. What is your assessment of modern day schools? What needs to change?
    6. In your clinical experience what do you think of boarding schools?
    7. In my research it seems that no child development theory suggests that taking children away from parents is a good thing. If this is true, why do you think that we still say that boarding school is 'the making of us.'
    8. What is neurodiversity?
    9. What is a different way to learn? What is self-directed learning?
    10. What is your vision for the future regarding education of our children?
    11. How do people learn more about you?

4 Things to Expect In Your First Therapy Session

4 Things to Expect In Your First Therapy Session

Any new experience can be nerve-racking, but what about therapy?  Therapy is the place you go to learn how to deal with anxiety and stress, and a first appointment is likely to cause those things a bit if you don't know what to expect, so today, Michelle covers four things that you can expect in your first therapy session so that you can know what you might be able to expect.

#209 EMDR Explained feat. Melissa Dumaz, LMFT

#209 EMDR Explained feat. Melissa Dumaz, LMFT

"You don't have to tell your whole story which can be painful. The beauty of that is you don't even have to have all the memories and details of your whole story and still be able to get some good work done. The beauty of that is you don't even have to be ready to talk about your story as long as you're ready to go inward because a lot of the work is happening inward. We're just prompting the brain and the body to do what it does naturally, which is to heal." - Melissa Dumaz, LMFT

Melissa Dumaz is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Best Selling Author of The Love Challenge, co-host of The HatsPodcast and founder of You Help You, her own practice. She specializes in guiding clients through the complexities of overcoming emotional and physical trauma. She also helps clients deal with grief & loss, relationship satisfaction, parenting, transitions in life, self-care management and more.

Today we talked about EMDR. I loved learning all about EMDR from Melissa. She explained how EMDR helps with trauma (what "counts" as trauma), how EMDR works and who it can help. This is a fascinating conversation. I hope you enjoy it.

This was the second time Melissa came on the podcast, check out our first conversation here.

Self-reflective Practice, Personal Healing, and Social Change with Dr. Bianka Hardin

Self-reflective Practice, Personal Healing, and Social Change with Dr. Bianka Hardin

“NARM really helped me through all of these protective strategies I had that were getting in the way of me showing up the way I authentically wanted to show up. So, I found something that has been personally transformative. And, whenever I do that, I want to tell everyone about it! I’ve seen my friends and peers go through NARM and really transform how they’re showing up in the world. It’s just really life-changing.” ~Bianka Hardin, PsyD

Our host Sarah is joined by Psychologist, Professor and NARM Therapist Dr. Bianka Hardin, to discuss the NeuroAffective Relational Model® (NARM®) and its role in professional development for helping professionals, including its central focus on the therapist’s own personal development, as a tool for impacting personal healing and social change.

Bianka was already an accomplished trauma therapist and professor working in Chicago, had completed many previous therapy trainings, and had been a leader in the trauma-informed movement for years when she was introduced to NARM.  She recalls the moment in her NARM training when she went all in -- using her own life as case study.

Although originally drawn to NARM’s “bottom-up” and “top-down” methodology, and its blending of somatic mindfulness with mindful awareness, it was the experiential practice that helped her feel the power of this work and that differentiated NARM from other approaches she had studied.

Bianka credits NARM for promoting an environment where a person’s protective strategies are honored, not forcibly eradicated.

Sarah and Bianka share the relief at finding a healing modality that provides less pressure for both the therapist and client, and a vehicle for embodying a sense of adult agency, a feeling of truly “growing up”.

NARM prepares therapists to bring this impactful work to their clients by giving them a learning experience  to learn from the inside-out. Bianka wouldn’t have it any other way: “You can’t have joy if you’re not able to tolerate the experience of your own pain.”

Bianka and Sarah reflect on the gift they’re able to give to their clients in supporting their capacity to discover what they most want for themselves in their lives and to be able to more deeply connect to themselves and others.

Bianka credits NARM with her growth as a therapist, teacher, mother, wife, friend and an individual. She is thrilled to be an ambassador for this cutting-edge model, in a field of complex trauma still in its infancy, and she’s honored and optimistic about sharing it with the world.
