What About Vietnam – S5-E8 – Empowering the Traveller: In the fight against Human Trafficking

Join us for an insightful journey into the pressing issue of human trafficking in Vietnam, and discover how, as a traveller, you have the ability to effect real change.

In this episode, I'm joined by Kim Miller, who offers firsthand insights into the challenges and the remarkable efforts undertaken by Blue Dragon, an organization dedicated to combatting human trafficking. As a listener, you'll gain a profound understanding of the poverty and vulnerabilities that fuel human trafficking, along with practical guidance on recognizing and responding to situations where individuals are exploited or in need of assistance.

We start off by talking about Kim’s experiences of Vietnam since 2016—Kim shares her deep affection for Vietnam, recounting her experiences living there and highlighting her favorite Vietnamese cuisines like Phở chiên phồng and destinations you may not have heard about just outside of Hanoi called – Ho Dong Do lake district

Kim shares her bold ambition of raising $200,000 by swimming the English Channel this July to support Blue Dragon's vital community initiatives.  Lets get behind Kim in this endeavour. See link to donate and support her swim  here

Tune in as she outlines actionable steps travellers can take to aid vulnerable individuals they encounter. From simply reaching out or alerting organizations like Blue Dragon, travellers can ensure prompt assistance for those in need, empowering them to play an active role in combating human trafficking.

This is an episode that I'm confident will offer you valuable insights and takeaways.

Finally, you are one click away from supporting Kim's cause, please check the link here and let’s unite in making a positive impact during our journeys through Vietnam.

Imogen Bright Moon: Weaver, Writer, Artist-Maker

For this episode we had the pleasure of speaking to Imogen Bright Moon, an artist-maker who uses spinning and weaving processes to transform raw materials into exquisitely crafted textile objects. Her contemporary weave practice combines traditional skills, and a storytelling sensibility, gathered from her background in costume design, fashion pattern cutting and puppetry, tailored to the needs of her young family.  Working exclusively with ethically sourced materials and suppliers, every step of the creation of her work – from field to final piece – is transparent and traceable.

Imogen is also a writer and poet, and her work is recently included in Wagtail: The Roma Woman’s Poetry Anthology, edited by Jo Clement, and published by Butcher’s Dog Magazine with support from ERIAC, and available for purchase online.

    This great business of SA!

    This great business of SA!

With rent to SA, we have the chance to create brilliant, rewarding win:win relationships with our property owners whether you have SA houses or apartments in a block, or another niche type of SA unit!

We provide a valuable service to our guests which has been shown to weather the battering of lock down, particularly well, with the diverse needs of travellers and key workers.

With our economic climate uncertain, it is likely that we’ll have more landlords, freeholders and property owners who will benefit from our type of property management, so it’s a good idea to make plans to how you can do this too.

What About Vietnam - Series 2 - 5 - Explore Mai Chau and its threaded history in textiles

What About Vietnam - Series 2 - 5 - Explore Mai Chau and its threaded history in textiles

Today we delve a little deeper into the cultural side of Vietnam as we traverse an area where many of the minority groups still live, as they have done for many hundreds of years.

Our program today takes us to a place called Mai Chau, Located in the Hoa Binh Province, about 135 Kms or 3 hours drive from Hanoi.

We get to explore this rustic location with my guest traveler Cynthia Mann who managed to complete a trip there recently when the Covid-19 Lockdowns were suspended and travel was open to locals and ex-pats.

Cynthia chats with us about the amazing villages in the area, home to the ethnic Thai and Hmong people. Due to Cynthia’s main business being in textile and design, she will talk to us about the vibrant local markets such as Muong and Pa Co Markets. Here, you can find traditional colourful handicraft products made using skills developed and passed down over many generations. We find out there is much to learn about those amazing handwoven scarves and bedspreads we see in our travels throughout Vietnam.

Mau Chau is a surprising delight. Not as overrun with tourists, as in places like Sapa, and offers a very authentic view of local village life. Surrounded by beautiful forests, and a major reservoir with its own sense of beauty, you will be charmed by this little idyllic location and Cynthia's experience.

Cynthia highly rated a new place to stay called Mai Chau Hideaway – details here if you are interested - http://maichauhideaway.com/

I mention a very lovely Eco Lodge which I stayed at and highly recommend for its location, quality of rooms and views - https://maichau.ecolodge.asia/

Cynthia Operates a gorgeous textile designer showroom in Hanoi – Called Future Traditions and you can find all her details here. Pop in or order online through her Facebook page here ;- https://www.facebook.com/FutureTraditions/
