    Zero Waste Tobago with RWL

    Zero Waste Tobago with RWL

    Is waste the new oil?
Shawn C. Roberts thinks so.  As the Managing Director of Recycling Waste & Logistics (RWL) he is responsible for the first ever multiple-materials recovery Facility in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Tobago Recycling Resource Initiative is Public Private Partnership (PPP) with RWL and the Tobago House of Assemble. It not only reduces pollution from plastics and other materials  but also provides employment, stimulates community development, and generates foreign exchange. This innovative project is propelling Tobago towards its ambitious goal of becoming a zero waste to landfill island.
When we rethink waste as a resource, there is no limit to the value that can be derived.

RWL is a manufacturing company that processes recyclable wastes into marketable commodities for reuse as raw materials. The company was founded by Shawn C. Roberts and Lisa Sandy-Roberts with a combined experience of 25 years waste & supply chain management, trading of recyclable commodities and research & market development

Achieving Sustainable Development with Dr. Nanda Dulal Das

Achieving Sustainable Development with Dr. Nanda Dulal Das

The definition of 'development' has evolved from purely economic terms, measured as GDP, to one that includes the ecological and social dimensions. On the season finale, host Derval Barzey discusses the concept of Sustainable Development with Dr. Nanda Dulal Das.  This is defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). https://sdgs.un.org/goals

Along the pursuit of the SDGs there are many obstacles, including the ongoing pandemic, as well as protectionist policies by individual countries, and a lack of accurate data.  With vast differences in populations size, India (1.3 Billion) and Trinidad & Tobago (1.3 Million) share some of the challenges to achieving Sustainable Development. Both countries have achieved 1 out of 17 SDGs and the others are in varying stages of progress.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Dulal Das remains optimistic that the SDGs are in fact  achievable. He is particularly interested in "Goal 2 of the SDG: Zero Hunger" and "Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities" and offers possible solutions to assist developing nations:

    • relieving the debt burden through wavering of loan and interest rate pardon from development banks
    • introduction of food credits (similar to carbon credits)
    • redirecting the labour force to agriculture to boost food production
    • using technology to maximize resources

    Dr. Peter Chin-Hong

    Dr. Peter Chin-Hong
We talk with Dr. Peter Chin-Hong from University of California, San Francisco about his expertise as an infectious disease clinician on the novel coronavirus and COVID-19. We'll talk about the current state of the pandemic in California, around the country, and in the world at-large. We also get into what's happening with the vaccines (including the FDA approved Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that uses mRNA to rewire a genetic trigger to the viral proteins) as well as other therapeutics, pandemic fatigue, and how holiday travel might work as other get togethers. But we didn't just talk about the biology or healthcare. We also talked about how Peter — or as his students call him, PCH, which are his initials as well as California's famous Pacific Coast Highway — got interested in medicine while he was growing up in Trinidad and Tobago. We also talked about racism is a public health concern and how Twitter provided not only community for him this year but also a way to learn from others in the larger medical community. Stay tuned until the end of the episode for a funny bit waxing about technology problems while recording. Special Guest: Dr. Peter Chin-Hong.

Fashion Alert: Climate Faux Pas with Kavir Mootoo

Fashion Alert: Climate Faux Pas with Kavir Mootoo

In this episode host Derval Barzey and artist Kavir Mootoo discuss the environmental and  socio-economic implications of the trillion dollar fashion industry. While fashion represents creativity, self-expression, glamour... it also represents 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When we talk fashion, we must also talk about pollution and water scarcity, sweatshops and modern day slavery, micro-plastics and waste. Fast fashion, consumerism and materialism are driving nature to its limits with the insatiable desire to be in style.

It is time we examine our relationship with fashion and the manner in which we assign value. Applying the seven Rs of Sustainability to the Fashion Industry highlights ways to reduce its heavy burden on the planet by disaggregating Fashion from overconsumption and waste:
    1. Rethink
    2. Refuse
    3. Reduce
    4. Reuse
    5. Repair
    6. Repurpose
    7. Recycle

As consumers, we can look good while doing good by making better choices and acting responsibly. Buy Less. Choose Well, & Take Good Care.

Kavir Mootoo creates wearable art and 2-D art and is passionate about environmental sustainability, fashion, nature, landscape architecture and societal issues.

Barking up the Right Tree with Tracey Baptiste

Barking up the Right Tree with Tracey Baptiste

This week’s quarantine edition of Story Seeds brings together two super imaginative Jersey girls: Tracey Baptiste (New York Times bestselling author of MINECRAFT: THE CRASH, as well as the creepy Caribbean series THE JUMBIES) and Amalia Tsampalis (age 12).

Tracey helps Amalia grow this story idea:

An athletic 12 year old girl loves to climb trees. Maybe this tree she loves to climb is in her backyard. It's really tall and there's not a lot of branches left. The personality of the tree is old and wise, and it's purposely losing its branches because it wants to create a challenge for the girl.

Follow this adventure as Story Seeds creator Sandhya Nankani sits in for Betsy Bird to host Tracey and Amalia’s virtual collaboration via video chat where:

    • They explore the power of nonverbal communication and brainstorm ideas for a wise tree character
    • They create an athletic, strong, girl character
    • They discover they both have Trinidadian roots and share stories about celebrating carnival
    • Amalia requests Tracey to weave her experiences of breaking an arm into the story
    • Tracey documents her writing process in a series of voice memo diaries

The episode concludes with this week’s story time (20:25) where Tracey reads the story she grew from Amalia’s story seed: Joy’s Challenge.

Books and media mentioned in this episode: THE JUMBIES by Tracey Baptiste and THE MAGIC TREEHOUSE series by Mary Pope Osborne.

The Wankers are BACK. Apologies to our FKWs, all it took was the solstice to bring Steven and Andrea back together and spitting takes. Upon recent return from France, where Andrea enjoyed the Women's World Cup group stage, the Wankers discuss transfer rumor tea (2:20), the three major international tournaments keeping them indoors watching footy all summer: the Women's World Cup (14:14), the Gold Cup (28:58) and the Copa America (34:40) and VAR, the cruel mistress of the cup. And as always, you've got subs if you need 'em.

    273: Karl Hudson Phillips

    273: Karl Hudson Phillips

When I first met Karl a few years ago at HOW Design Live here in Atlanta, I knew I had to have him on the show because he embodies something special about the design community. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Karl came here to the U.S. for college, learned design and coding, and since then has built a vibrant and active community for coders, designers and creatives through his two annual events -- SyntaxCon and Revolve Conference.

We started off talking about Karl's work at his firm Harbormark, and from there he walked me through his journey from the Caribbean to the Carolinas, and how his first meetup in 2011 was the spark of something great. We also spent a good bit of time talking about conferences, speaking, and how these experiences are for people of color. Karl even gave some great advice for those looking to get into conference speaking, and we both give some advice for conference organizers out there. I'm really excited to see what Karl creates next!
